These square tiles have been appearing on several of my video files, especially those that have been DVR'd by the TV Tuner in my Media Center. When a scene with a much darker shade is shown, the squares turn white so that they can remain visible. Has anybody else had these watermarks appear before, and if so, what are they a result of?

Looks to me like some kind of logo. If you've played a DivX movie, you'll notice that the DivX logo appears in those videos as well. It's probably just the DVR leaving its mark on the clip.
