I saw a promo for Leno yesterday that said Ben Folds was going to be on. I knew I'd never be up that late, so I taped it and just watched the tape.

I love Ben. He was great as always. But I noticed this long-haired tambourine player behind the piano. It was kind of cool; the sound was mixed so you could actually hear the tambourine, which is unusual, and it really made the song sound better, which is even more unusual. The guy was grooving like mad, his long curly hair making a quantum electron-cloud-esque pattern around his head. Somewhere around the end of the song I caught a look at his face, and it was Weird Al. I knew that Al had done backing vocals on one track of the new album, but I never expected to see him sitting in with the band. And Al, cool as always, never called attention to himself or drew focus away from the song (any more than any other band member). He didn't have any big close-ups. He didn't even get introduced after the song was over. All he did was groove his brains out. What a guy.

Did I mention that I love Ben Folds? And Weird Al?

Did anyone else happen to catch that last night?

I gave up watching Leno years ago, and I don't know who Ben Folds is. But I dig Weird Al, and wish I could have caught that.

Ben Folds with a couple of common people providing vocals.

I keep reading this title as our Ben folding on Leno. Folding what, I can't figure out...

That Shatner album is actually really good. That's one of many things that impresses me about Ben Folds. He's got to be the only person who could produce an album for William Shatner and turn it into something legitimately worth listening to.

I actually managed to catch this. I'm not a regular Leno viewer; it was just something I happened to be watching.

Do you know the tite of the song that Ben performed?

It's called "Landed", off the new Songs for Silverman album. The whole album is excellent, but if you'd never heard him before and are looking to pick something up, I'd recommend his previous disc, Rockin' the Suburbs. It's even better.
