My mom is wanting to hook her up on the Internet so that she can check email and sometimes look up stuff on webMD.

She won't be on it enough to justify paying for superior (or stable) service without ads, she just wants to infrequently get on line.

She has an older computer with XP and a 56 modem.

I remember the days when I could get free Internet from Kmart--if you had an annoying ad at the bottom of your screen. Are there any free Internet providers around still?

I heard NETZERO might have a free version, but I can't find it. Also, are there such things as Internet boosters that make your pages load faster? I have seen them on friends computers, but I don't trust their testimony, plus it looked like spyware.

Can anyone help me out? I am looking for Free Internet and a possible web booster.

I'm afraid I can't help you out with the free internet.

As far as speed boosters are concerned, I've never really been too comfortable with them. They are usually glorified spyware and serve no purpose other than being a placebo of sorts for the user. In my experience none of these "speed boosters" have yielded any noticeable increase in performance.

However there may be a few good ones but they won't work quite the way most people would think. They don't suddenly make your connection better, all they do is optimize the settings on your computer so that your connection is used to the fullest. Your 56K modem connection won't magically double in speed simply because you have one of these things installed.

My advise: If you absolutely feel like you must get more speed out of your connection and feel like you can risk it, do some research and find one. If you don't need it that badly then refrain.

Thank you Rico. I don't think I trust boosters on my mum' computer. I think I will just try and find a free internet connection.

I believe the days of free internet are over. NetZero used to be free, but now it's $9.95 a month. You just can't stay in business if you're giving your product away and relying on banner ads for revenue.

I opened this thread thinking I was going to get a free booster.

*disappointed*

Well... if you're willing for last chance sort of things, go with AOL. 2 free months, plus when you go to cancel, they'll give you more free time.

That is... if you can call selling your soul "free".
