I was thinking about some of the user personalities I've seen on Hatrack and started wondering if I could replace verbs or adjectives with user names instead. From that thought spawned the idea for this thread:

If a Hatrack username dictionary were made, what would it look like?

I'll start with a little example:

n. Tante Shvester - Someone who increases their post count at an incredible rate on a daily basis.

v.Shvester, Shvestering - The act of posting a lot on forums. Not to be confused with spammers, someone who shvesters manages to make good (although sometimes short)posts in large quantities; "That guy totally shvestered his way to 5000 posts."

I'm still a relative newcomer to the boards but Tante Shvester always sticks up as a cool poster for me [Smile]

So, go ahead and add your own entries!

This is pretty cool.

v Scopatz - to let fly a blinding series of the funnies. "Man, you totally Scopatzed that thread." See also embarrassment of riches.

PS: Totally agree with the above two, as well.

2. Not clear to the understanding; "I didn't grasp the meaning of that enigmatic comment until much later"

phoo! This game doesn't work so well for some of us.

Forum dictionaries have to spring naturally from forum usage.

It's cheating to go about inventing word for the sake of inventing words.

Here are some good words that have been used on the forum in natural conversation:

Squick: [verb] to create a feeling of disgust. Incest squicks me out.

Cedonym: [noun] an alternative name for a poster; commonly used when poster has a reputation for being decptive, malicious, or beligerent, and uses an alternative name to escape retribution from the mods or polite police. John used the cedonym 'kewlJ0n' to keep posting on Hatrack after being banned.

The Four Horsemen: [prop. noun] Sarcasm, Cynicism, ???, and TomDavidson. I can't remember the third horseman.

Jatraquero/a: [noun] A member of the www.hatrack.com forums. Commonly, 'Hatracker.'

To Be Real: [adj] describes a Jatraquero's state of being; if a jatraquero has met in real life, two other jatraqueros, he is said to 'be real.'

And so on.

Don't worry Jonathan, Tom hasn't gone by Horseman of the Hatrack Apocalypse since...oh, before you were born (seriously, it's just a reference to some ancient Hatrack history).

One occurance doesn't make somebody's name a definition of that trait, JH. Particularly not when the trait isn't exactly flattering.

As far as giving me an entry, I would prefer you didn't.

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

But I need to know what they did, and why the four joined to form that {union? Organisation? Social Group of Conspirators?} so I can mark it in my entry... I'm forming the dictionary - you just keep posting ideas.

I registered this name primarily to tease a guy named Nick, who constantly missed the sarcasm in various people's posts. He was a good guy and took it well, though. What ever happened to him?

Anyway, my Australian look-alike, Ethics Gradient, registered the name Cynicism to be my accomplice in crime. Then we decided to add two more and become the Horseman of the Hatrack Apocalypse. We launched a very successful recruiting campaign that resulted in the addition of Fluff and TomDavidson to our ranks.

I believe there was an exception to the "Real" stuff, with the Cards...

The idea of becoming "Real" happened because of people at Hatrack using so many pseudonyms that no one knew who was real and who wasn't...

But as Hatrack IS OSC's web site he was "real", as was his family, even if they had never met other Hatrackers (as if we would let THAT happen... [Big Grin] ).

You have to meet two other jatraqueros who are already real when the meeting occurs.

We had a few people who didn't know anyone other than each other, and that from before they posted here, and they tries to declare themselves "Real", but as none of them had ever met any other Jatraqueros it wasn't valid. [Big Grin]

And posts with eight smilies in them don't count.

And this guy counts as seven smilies all by himself:

Sure, change the rules on me now! And just to spite you, I'll make a "Tag, you're it" thread that will cause such post count inflation as to make the whole system meaningless.

You know what? I think I will.

So there. [Taunt]

We really need more stringent requirements for being real. Seems everyone is real these days.

Anyway, back to Hatrack lexicon, if dingle hasn't been included yet, it ought to be.

Further addenda to proposed new postcount exchange rate: Animated smilies should count double toward your seven smilie allowance.

It's degrees of separation. If you had met Slash the Berserker, it would be O degrees of separation.
Since Ralphie knows the Berserker, you would have a Slash Number of 1

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

I have a suggestion: let's decide on "authenticity", as one level beyond realness.

The number of real Hatrackers you met (at the time they were real) times the number of posts you posted under your standard pseudonym, times the number of days you were registered on the forum with your main username.

I, for instance, have met 2 real hatrackers. That's 2 times 2305 posts which is 4610, times 283 days I was here, and my authenticity is 1,304,630, in other words I'm roughly with the "authenticity" level of 1.3M.

Those who aren't real will have 0 Hatrack authenticity.

As for those who joined "A Long Time Ago" - I don't know what to do about them.

Note: I just changed the entry "Realness" into a Proper Noun, so I'm capitalising it (if I'll remember to).

OK, how about we divide the result of those multiplications by your Slash Number? I assume that every Real Hatracker is connected to Slash SOMEHOW.

By the way, does anyone know MY Slash Number through either Raia or CM?

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

Hmm. . .

I didn't realize that about 'realness.' I must have missed the note somewhere. . .

Anyway, from what I understand, I've been real since 2003, after sitting next to kacard the first day of Literary Boot Camp. Does someone care to inform me differently?

As for Hatrack Royalty-- meh. These things come and go.

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

How about this as a formula:

[tr^2 x SQRT(p)]/s^2

"t" being the days you were on, "r" the real people you've met, "p" your post count and "s" your Slash Number?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Scott, I think it's pretty clear that the combination of OSC and kacard can bestow Realness, as I believe both have met Slash. Not to mention any number of other Real Jatraqueros.

Besides, you've met a chunk of the PNW clump -- don't get more real than that. [Big Grin]

JH, there may be lines with lower Slash numbers for you, but I've met Ralphie and Raia. So via that route, I guess your Slash number (using Shigosei's formula) is 4.

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

So how do you think the formula works? I'm pretty hopeless with functions, but the aim is that someone like Tante who has a very high ratio of posts:time should start off with low increments of rating but increase as time flows with less effect of the posts posted later on. In other words, that the original boost in posts will be more valuable later.

Posted by kojabu (Member # 8042) on :

It all depends on how many real hatrackers she meets and how close they are to Slash.

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

If that could have a lesser effect in such a case - the better. I need to apply this to many situations, but I'm no great formulit. How're my graphs doing?

Posted by kojabu (Member # 8042) on :

The problem with making graphs with that many variables (I don't know how to do it) is that it'll just be squiggly lines or something. But someone with higher math knowledge correct me.

Only in a case in which the posts and the time have an extreme ratio of more than, say, 20:1 or 1:5 (posts:days).

I like making things complex (yeah, yeah, "Okam's Razor"), but in this case I want everyone to get what he or she deserves, without a serious possibility for someone to get an extremely high rating/grading only for one thing attained (a long register time, a lot of posts, a lot of Real friends or meeting Slash in person).

Of course, Slash being a No. 0, has an infinite rating. Problematic, or should we keep it?

I'm assuming by this that you are underage, and thus not allowed by your parents. If you really wanted to meet somebody off Hatrack, there is always the possibility of meeting the Hatracker(s) with your parent or guardian present. I believe this has been done before with teenaged Hatrackers. It eliminates most of the "scary internet stalkers" worries which are, of course, completely understandable in a parent.

Wait, I'm doing what now? I thought I was mildly teasing you whilst picking on my sister. Oops.

The whole "Real" thing is relative anyway. For someone who has not met any of the Officially Real people, none of them would have to be considered real. Whereas if you've met a small cluster of Hatrackers they are real to you, whether any of them are Officially Real or not. "Reality" is the only word in the language that should always be used in quotes. (MLWTTKK)

I think post count equals popularity much of the time. We feel like we know the people whose posts we see most often, so people with low post counts just don't get noticed much of the time. It's okay with me; I'm just saying that post count definitely isn't meaningless.

But not all high posters are popular, and not all low posters are invisible. There is, however, a trend in that direction.
