Woe is me. I've had so many migraines lately, I've lost count. I get the type with the aura first. My vision gets blurry, progresses with floaters, and generally is a pain in the butt. Periphrial vision?? What's THAT? This is what it's like...I can look at you, focusing on your eye, and your other eye is in a blind spot. I can't look at your whole face at once. Nono.

And reading! HA! How well can you read when you can look at one word at a time and sometimes not even that much.

That only last about 30 minutes or so. Then the migraine comes. Oh what fun! Pain lovely pain. Unless I managed to take medicine beforehand. Then it's just mild pain. But the dizziness and the nausea... yeah.. that's there no matter what.

So, I'm going to the doctor on Tuesday. Hopefully he'll tell me what's wrong with me. I keep on thinking Brain Tumor. More likely it's related to something a lot more mundane.

I had these in high school. Then they went away. They came back for a while in December, but they went away when I switched back to my old BC pills. Now they're back. I don't know why, so I need to whine about it.

It's therapeutic.

Do you want to whine about something, too?

I thought packing was bad. Unpacking is MUCH worse.

But migraines are worse than packing and unpacking put together.

Katarain, do you take prescription migraine meds for them? Mine are triggered by hormones (my doc wanted to put me on BC to try to get rid of them -- I don't get them while I'm pregnant, go figure -- but man I hate BC pills), stress, poor eating habits and/or lack of sleep. But I take Zomig when one strikes and I'm pretty well good as new within an hour.

Posted by Katarain (Member # 6659) on :

Nope. But Tuesday I go to the doctor. So maybe I will be soon.

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

Cool. Best of luck. I hear that Imitrex works great for some people. I've only ever tried Zomig, but understand that it doesn't work for everyone. It's a miracle in pill form as far as I'm concerned, though.

Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :

Migraines are indeed horrible. Mine are usually pretty mild and are more aural than visual (like there are no background noises, everything is foreground noise). Like jeniwren, mine are also triggered by hormones (as if periods weren't bad enough by themselves, I have to deal with migraines at the same time), as well as stress, and allergies (a few of my food allergies trigger migraines).

Both immitrex and zomig worked sometimes for me. I get better results with a more generic headache medicine - Midrin.

I got nothing. I'm sorry. *runs away very, very quickly*

More whining from me. First, I had to listen to a 75 minute long story about a woman who bathed in virgins' blood in one of my classes today. Next, I get a call from my mother saying that she still hasn't seen a bill from the school. Apparently the school decided a) not to send me a copy of the bill (I guess since I owed $0 they thought it wasn't important) and b) not to send my parents a copy despite the fact that I had signed a form saying I wanted them to send my parents a copy. I'll join you in that whine. I went in for a trim last week, which for me is 4-6 inches (My hair is past my waist...or at least it used to be). The woman took off 10 inches! I suppose I should have been worried when she didn't know how long 6" was, but I thought we had established that it was the length of her comb. I've never had such a disastrous haircut before, so I really wasn't prepared for such incompetence.

The moral of the story: run away from any "hairdresser" who doesn't understand length measurements. And if you happen to be in Tucson, AZ, stay away from Planet Haircare at the Park Place Mall.

I swear some stylists itch for the chance to chop it off. . I used to go to my sister-in-law, but I had to quit when my hair reached above my shoulders. Of course she cut it that way - her own hair is chin-length, and she clearly thinks chin-length hair is cute. It is cute! It's also not what I want. I think that's why I prefer guys - they don't cut everyone's hair to match their own.

Where are you? Maybe we could trade...[EDIT: locations, not hairstylists...]

It's still hellishly hot here, I don't recommend it. Actually, we're hoping to move away next year, to someplace with normal seasons, cold winters, and a distinct lack of urban sprawl. I don't yet know where that place will be, but I suspect somewhere in the midwest.

To give an idea of the amount of sprawl, I live around 30 miles (straight line) from downtown Tucson, yet the city limits are less than a mile away. If I weren't lazy I would go look up how many square miles Tucson is. (Was that proper use of the subjunctive? I can never tell, it just looks horribly wrong to me.)

I'm now in southwestern AZ, but I lived in Tucson for 4 years while I was attending the UofA. It's downright peachy in Tucson compared to here, where I'm pretty sure our average temperature is usually about 5-10 degrees higher. I loved the seasons because I can't handle cold all that well and I thought winters in Tucson, if you can call them that, were cold enough.

I have to say I agree with your sentiments on urban sprawl, though. I never really liked the look of it...but I do miss being there. Probably because I had more freedom there and not because of the city itself.

Good luck with the move. [Smile]

Ah, somewhere in the vicinity of Yuma, I'm guessing. I was just there last weekend, and I agree it was miserably hot there. Especially since Corona de Tucson (where I live) is often 5-10 degrees cooler than metro Tucson. I think I'll pass on trading locations with you, then *G*.

I hate being stuck in the house because there are no drivers currently in my house and because of the stupid storm.

And I strongly dislike the characteristic in most of the other students in my grade where they absorb anything that's told to them by a teacher, regardless of whether it even remotely makes sense, just because they think teachers are all-knowing and must be brilliant and because they can't think for themselves anyways. (Yes, just recently something like this happened to me in class and I still can't get over it) (And I WAS RIGHT!)

My problem was and continues to be my lack of money and transportation. It would have been easier while I lived there since I'd at least be in the same city as other Jatraqueros and could ride the bus. Now I'm not sure when my next chance to go back will be. Oh well. Such is life.

They are excruciating. Starting over the right or left eye, they make my head feel like I am being slowly trepanned as the pain reaches and connects to the back of my head...
Right now I am gloomy over various things, especially my birthday tomorrow.
I so dislike birthdays. Perhaps because I want attention and no one will really give it to me.

More whining: It's way too hot outside. The school thermometer said it was 104 to give you an idea. I think it's actually 98 or 99. Still, walking 10 minutes or more across campus with no shade in that heat is not fun. I'm all sweaty and nasty. It's just bad.

Today I have a headache, don't like the book I have to read for school, and am thoroughly frustrated with my poor attempts at quilting. Oh, and a gift I'm trying to get my best friend that I really adore costs 70 dollars more than I'm comfortable with. [EDIT: D'oh, I could have sworn I was in the telemarketer thread when I posted that. Moving it now...]

Yes dry heat is better than humid heat, but it gets pretty humid here during the monsoon. This year it hasn't been too bad, but some years are horrible. Even though it's only maybe 75% humidity, the temperature is closer to 115 degrees.

Houston can get that bad, or at least I've recalled it getting that bad. Dallas doesn't, but it's still not fun. According to weather.com, it's 98 degress here with 40% humidity, meaning it feels like 105 degrees. Fun stuff.

theCrowsWife, where are you that you talk about monsoons? I mean, I have monsoons (Sri Lanka gets both monsoon seasons) but not many people here do. So, fess up.

Katarain, I have major sympathies. I've taken just about every drug that exists for migraines. Imitrex was a bad one for me - my side effects sent me to the hospital - and so was cafergot. But the one ketchupqueen recommended *digs around in purse* tramadol, when combined with ibuprofen, works like a charm.

For me, my worst migraines were during puberty. And now that I'm going through perimenopause, it's the same dang thing all over again. Sigh. Is it possible it's hormonal fluctuations for you, too?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

She's in AZ, quid. They do get a monsoon season with flash flooding and everything in the south every year.

Posted by theCrowsWife (Member # 8302) on :

What ketchupqueen said. Tucson is close to the northwest edge of the monsoon area. Phoenix doesn't get as many full-fledged storms, and Yuma gets even fewer. That's why we moved as far southeast of Tucson as we could get [Big Grin]

--Mel

Posted by Katarain (Member # 6659) on :

It is possible that they're related to hormonal fluctuations. But I'm almost hesitant to say that...because it's not every month. I had a period of several months when I was fine. And I was fine for years in my early 20s. No migraines. Irregular as all get out.. but no migraines.

I guess now I'm just scared that it's something serious, and I don't want the doctor to miss it because he blames it on my cycle.

Ya know?

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

kq and CrowsWife, thanks for the education. I had no idea that Arizone got monsoons. Yowza! The things I learn!

Katarain, I hate to tell you this, but what you're saying doesn't rule out the possibility of it being hormonal. OTOH, I have no idea of your age or when perimenopause happens in your family, or the hormonal patterns, or all that other good stuff.

And yeah, I know what you mean, too.

Regardless, I still have major sympathy for you. [Frown]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tante, with all due respect, this is a self-indulgent whining thread. NO one wants to be told to GET OVER their self-indulgent whining. Then it wouldn't be self-indulgent whining.

I agree with you completely, but allow Jaime the ability to whine self-indulgently in peace. There's not many places in Hatrack where one can do that, we're normally a no-whining zone. That's what makes this thread so cathartic for some. [Smile]

Golly, Belle, when you are right you are right. Now it's my turn to whine, and Jaime, if you want to tell me to get over it, well, I guess I deserve that. I do apologise to you.

<whiningly> I used to get my prescriptions from my neighborhood pharmacy, where they know me. But my insurance plan steeply penalizes getting prescriptions from anywhere but their mail-order pharmacy. I saw my doctor a month ago, and he wrote me out prescriptions for refills of my stuff. I sent it in to the mail order pharmacy three weeks ago. And I still haven't gotten anything from them but emails letting me know the status of my order (They received my order. They are checking my order. They are filling my order. My order will be shipped. My order has been shipped.) But I still don't have the pills. And I ran out of my stuff a few days ago. So now I am suffering greviously. Joint pain in, well, name a joint. Fatigue, malaise, sores in my mouth. And it has been so sunny the past few days that it is torture to go outside in the daylight. But, with my job, I need to drive to my clients' homes, even on clear sunny days. So I feel particularly lousy, and I really really want my medicine, but I have to wait until it arrives. Tomorrow, I hope.

Fahim and I went out today. I had an ultrasound to find out if my ovaries were shrinking because of the hormones and perimenopause stuff. I didn't know it was going to be an internal ultrasound. You know, like when they put that cold gel crap on the end of the wand and then shove it up your vagina. Cold. You know, really really cold. And then shove it around, poking in all the crevices of my neither region, here and there and there and here until they get the shots they want.

Ick.

And then we went to Pettah market to buy elephant hats - long story - and had to bargain the seller down from Rs.1850 to Rs.480 (the hats were worth Rs300-400 each) - we're not as dumb as they think we are! But Rs.480 was as low as we could get them. If Fahim had been by himself, it would have been different. . . White chic, high prices. Ya know?

Then we go home, and even though I brought water with us (with a packet of hydration salts mixed in), I started getting, what, heatstroke? Migraine? Same thing. Ran out of water, and usually 1 liter is enough for a couple of hours. Had to get Fahim to buy water for me on the way home, and coke, too, for the caffeine. Took my magic pill combination (thanks again, and again, and again, and again, ketchupqueen), came home, and zonked in the bedroom with air conditioning.

And I have zero sense of time. I thought I was up there for an hour at least - I managed to read 60 pages or so - but according to my watch, it was only ten minutes. How is that possible? Am I in some kind of a time warp or something?

Or maybe it's the migraine affecting my ability to tell time again.

I don't know.

(Katarain, this is a long shot, but it's an inexpensive long shot, so still worth giving it a try. Get some hydration salts from the pharmacy, and drink that when a headache starts coming on. I know we're in a tropical country, so it makes sense that it would be more important to us here, but seriously, they've made dozens of headaches that were starting to go migranous go away since I started using it a month or two ago.)

If I'm actually not typing in anything resembling an actual language, I'm sorry. That sometimes happens with migraines, too. [Dont Know]

Posted by Katarain (Member # 6659) on :

Did I mention that I made my screen black to try and combat the glare on my computer screen? It seems to make the headaches worse. I don't really think it's causing it, though.

Yes, I know that it could very well be hormonal...I just don't want to mistakenly agree to that too early. I guess I'll just wait and see what the doctor says about it.

I don't know what hydration salts are, but it sounds like an oxymoron. How could salt hydrate you??

I think in any case, I better start keeping a food and drink diary, in case they are caused by food triggers. I haven't noticed a pattern, but it's possible I just missed it.

I'm glad that others are getting catharsis from this whining thread. I feel like I have contributed to hatrack in a weird way by creating it. [Smile] And Space Opera made the perfect balance with her good stuff thread. [Smile]

Salt causes you to retain water, which is a good thing in hot climates. Hydration salts generally contain potassium and some sugar as well. That's basically what Gatorade is, only with lots of extra sugar.

If dehydration is part of your problem, they might help. It shouldn't hurt you to try.

meeting now....

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Drinking a lot of water, though, from my understanding, can also leach some minerals from your body, which is why hydration salts can be important - to restore that balance. I drink a lot of water, too, and I still need the hydration salts.

Posted by theCrowsWife (Member # 8302) on :

Yes, if you drink too much water without replacing the salts, you can get an electrolyte imbalance. I understand that the symptoms of that can be similar to dehydration, leading people to drink more water...

Personally, I never use hydration salts, but I think I'm better adapted to the desert than my husband. He loses salts very easily, and water goes right through him without stopping to actually rehydrate him.

Thanks. I will, in another 4 to 10 years. *sigh again* (Perimenopause.)

Edited to add: This is directed at CrowsWife.

Katarain, probably. The hydration salts I have include sodium chloride, sodium citrate, potassium chloride, and destrose anhydrous.

Posted by theCrowsWife (Member # 8302) on :

Yes powerade/gatorade would do the same thing, just be aware that they have a lot of sugar. Those drinks are meant for athletes, who need the quick sugar boost. I don't know if hydration salts come with flavoring, but if not you could add lemon or lime juice to them. Alternatively, if you don't mind spending more money, you could drink Pedialyte. That will replace electrolytes without all of the extra sugar.

--Mel

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

The ones we get here are the local equivalent of pedialyte - they're infant hydration salts for when children experience diarrhea or vomiting. But honestly, what does it matter how old the person is who's taking it? And yeah, the ones we get here come in orange and lime flavored. I prefer the lime. One packet is Rs. 23.80, or about $0.24 US, and is about a tablespoon or so of powder, enough for 1 litre, or about 4 cups, of water.

Honestly, they work wonders. Fahim even uses it now for his headaches even though he's a local, and therefore acclimated, and it gets rid of his headaches better than 90% of the time.

Posted by Katarain (Member # 6659) on :

Aah. Okay. You know, I actually get cravings for powerade occassionally. I usually go ahead and buy some. Maybe it's related.

I'm dizzy. Really dizzy. I'm sick of this. I've been sick since Sunday. At first it was some bug that Fahim and I picked up, and right when that bug decided it was done inhabiting my body, I get all the side-effects of my period without the actual period.

Sigh.
