I love this movie, and the sequel. I think they are great family comedies and that guys have free reign to watch them because of that. It's recently come to my attention that this is a chick flick, and that I need some testosterome. [Razz]

What say you, hatrack? Chick flick, great comedy, or both?

My wife love's them. I like them as well.

And they're clean and positive and funny.

Chick flick? Yes, but the comedy and "father familiarity" rings true with the opposite gender as well.

I couldn't get past the price tag for the wedding, which you find out in the first few minutes.

I worked in a movie theater when that movie, Father of the Bride, came out. My theater only played on movie at a time. Anyway, we actually sold out for that movie. The crowds we had were amazing. I never saw another movie sell like that one in the four years I worked there.

Several years ago I saw a little comedy central special about Steve Martin. One of the interview bits that stood out was someone (fairly sure it was John Cleese, but not positive) explaining that Steve Martin would do these odd comedies that usually weren't all that popular in the mainstream, where he'd not only act but also write and produce and maybe direct, because that was the kind of movie he loved to do, but he'd also do things like Father of the Bride, because he has a very expensive art collection.

Didn't like it. Well-intentioned, but too by-the-numbers sentimental, and not that funny.

Also, there's the whole unreal class element of the movie. It's difficult enough to believe that Martin's factory workers love him so much (well, maybe since he IS Steve Martin... IRL, how many factory workers love their boss like that?) Worse though is that Martin's already upper middle class, and then the film tries to give Martin an "everyman" sensibility by having him be uncomfortable with how rich his son-in-law's family is.

Are we discussing the original or the remake?

I assume the remake with Steve Martin, but it should be pointed out that there WAS an earlier version. Both are great, IMO. [Smile]

I don't mind the Steve Martin version -- it's pretty good.

The original with Spencer Tracy is better.

I have seen the remake of father of the bride and the second one, and the orginal Daddy's little divedend (the original of father of the bride part 2), it's adorable.
