Hey all, your friendly neighborhood Lyrhawn here with an important announcement.

I'd like to start the creation of a Hatrack netflix like creation. Everyone should post here movies, books, dvds, cds, whatever that they have always wanted to see, but can't find or don't want or whatever.

Also, people should list things they have that they love and highly recommend and would be willing to mail to other people.

People will still have to pay for postage, but otherwise it will be totally free, and with the combined power of Hatrack's media library, we should be able to watch, read and listen to pretty much anything and everything!

I know some people are already interested in the idea. So, all who are on board, post here!

*posts*

We need some sort of oath of honesty, that we'll return them all... *glares*

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

That's the spirit!

Posted by Hamson (Member # 7808) on :

Nice idea Lyrhawn. In fact, you can just drive all of your DVDs over to my homestead. It's slightly cheeper than mailing, but then you could stalk me.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Hey that's right I could! But with the price of gas, would that really be cheaper than mailing?

And yeah, there should be an oath of some sort.

I solemnly swear I am up to no good! Wait, that's taken, and, the wrong spirit of honesty.

I delegate the creation of an oath to you Raia.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Ooh! *goes off to create*

I'm totally uncreative, though...

Posted by Hamson (Member # 7808) on :

I call Firefly series from someone!

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

How about this?

I, <insert Hatracker>, solemnly swear to abide by the rules of 'Rackflix, to neither covet, steal, nor take hostage any film, book, musical item, or more, belonging to a fellow Hatracker. Furthermore, I vow to pay the required postage, to return the borrowed items within a reasonable time slot, and to (for the most part) respect the laws of copyright as applicable to home viewing. By swearing this oath, I am binding myself to the honesty that is Hatrack, and am now permitted to participate in this endeavor.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

But that's so . . . serious.

How 'bout, "I, <insert Hatracker's name> do solemnly swear not to jeer at Lyrhawn and make fun of the way him. Too much." That oughta do the job. [Big Grin]

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

I told you I'm not creative. [Razz]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Hamson, I have Firefly. That works out pretty well!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Hmm. I think I would need an oath signed in blood before I sent my L&C DVDs anywhere. My babies!

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Maybe we should just do it personally... don't swear here, but if you're interested, contact the other person involved one-on-one. That might solve problems like that.

Posted by Cactus Jack (Member # 2671) on :

The oath is great--it just needs some nice gory bits follwing the word, "Otherwise . . ."

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

You're right. Absolutely.

Otherwise, consequences will include death by decapitation, live burning at the stake, and being eaten by rabid wild dogs. If the person in question does not like these forms of punishment, they may devise their own ultimatum, provided it is dire enough to make up for infringement of the 'Rackflix oath.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Well why not post here what you want to see or read?

And then we can all privately contact each other.

That way, you will contact whoever you think you can trust the best?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Good plan. It has the Raia approval. [Wink]

But could I borrow them?

What if I buy you dinner?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Sweet I have Raia approval! I'm set!

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

[Big Grin]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

kq, sure. Even if you don't buy me dinner. I wouldn't even have to mail them (which is part of my concern).

I'm still going to need the blood oath, though . . .

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Okay, I can do a blood oath. Will swearing on my daughter's life be good enough? [Big Grin]

I had a dream last night that I had to take care of your youngest two because you broke your leg in five places and had to be in traction. And I kept thinking, "Where are her parents? Doesn't she have friends? I know they have friends..." Not that it was that much of a nightmare. Just really, really weird, as, not that I'm denigrating myself here, but I don't think I'm your first choice to care for your children in the case of your being injured.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I'd also have to include a rule against copying in order to be comfortable with the plan. I'd rather not participate in a ring of DVD theft. [Wink]

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

*cough*

See? She thought of everything.

Personally, If anyone has Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, I'd love to borrow it.

And I'd be interested if anyone has any anime that they really like and happens to have on DVD.

*considers* Yes, I think that will be sufficient.

I still have blank videotapes waiting for you, you know.

What did I do with my oldest? And how did I break my leg?

And yeah, I'd tend to prefer someone who would be able to cook food that was kosher for them. [Wink]

But think of the money to be made! And the backstabbing that would ensue!

Your oldest, good child, was taking care of you. I kept asking people how you broke your leg, and no one knew.

Exactly! We had to feed them on pre-packaged food and take-out.

Wow! That's very impressive. I'll have to thank her.

Uh-HUH. *backs away from kq*

Which never ever happens when they're with me. *whistles innocently*

I'm a little dubious about the economics of book-sharing via the USPS -- isn't postage both ways going to pretty much equal what buying it at your local used book store would cost, nevermind getting it out of your local library?

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Depends on how expensive the book is....

The original idea was for DVDs. Hence the Rackflix name, to mirror Netflix.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

The only reason I can't see this working is because the bare minimum cost to safely ship a DVD is about $2.20, including a bubble mailer, assuming it's one disc and has a single page insert, and you'd have to pay that each way - and five DVDs later, you've covered the cost of a month of netflix.

Well, what if it is a regional sort of thing, like people near each other...

I have firefly also. CD 1 is lent out to a coworker right now though. Everyone should watch the firefly DVD's before watching the Serenity movie.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Maybe we should just make it a regional thing then. I could lend Hamson Firefly easily, he doesn't live that far away.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Ah well. It was a good idea.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

The cost part was actually why I wasn't signing up. I can buy any DVD here cheaper for what you would have to pay to mail it to someone in a neighboring state. So, I think I'll resume my usual activity of watching pirated DVDs. [Big Grin]

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

No wonder they're cheaper. [Razz]

Yeah. Quid made the conscious choice to live in a country whose entertainment options consist almost entirely of theft.

Or available...
When Shadow of the Giant came out, it was already on hold for a couple weeks before I could get it at the library. And something that new doesn't show up in used book stores, and at a place like Borders, it's around $25. So theoreticly, if someone bought SotG, then we could... yeah, that would pretty much scam the person who bought it, and it would scam OSC from us buying it, or at least getting it from the library.

Hehe

Well, consider my library of speculative fiction, history, and assorted other odds and ends open to people in the DC area who wants to borrow, I suppose.

Posted by unicornwhisperer (Member # 294) on :

*bump*

If anyone has a copy of "Fluppies" I would very much like to borrow it. It would be very nostolgic and I would like my 2 year old son to see it with me. I think Leonide said they had a copy. [Smile]
Will pay for shipping.

Hokey smokes, this thread came out of nowhere. I thought it was dead and gone.

Anyone got a copy of Neil Gaiman's Mirrormask or some of the Sandman comics?

Posted by unicornwhisperer (Member # 294) on :

Hokey smokes? That's something new... [Big Grin]

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

And speaking of theft, I read in the local paper a month or so back that something like half of all textbooks used in schools in this country are plagiarized. Yup, government support and all. [Roll Eyes]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

You've never heard Hokey smokes?

Posted by Leonide (Member # 4157) on :

Unfortunately, unicorn, i haven't the faintest idea where that movie could be. Mostlikely, it was thrown out when my family moved out of our house a few years back.

*sad*

But i'll give my mom's video collection a once-over before i say definitely [Smile]

Several universities have been busted for plagiarizing plagiarizing policies--that is, they stole the text of their plagiarizing policies from other schools.

Post-modern meta-humour at it's best.

Rivka, I hope your leg is healing well. I assume you must be out of traction by now, but you haven't really been very good about posting updates on your condition. Just know that you have a lot of us out here praying and sending out good thoughts to you. I hope that with time and lots and lots of physical therapy you will be back on your feet with a more-or-less normal gait.

At the beginning of Nine Princes in Amber, Corwin goes back to his house, which has been abandoned for years. The place is completely looted, except for the bookshelves, which haven't been touched. Corwin says he could have expected that, because "only friends steal your books."

Anyone have Crossgen comics? In particular, the very hard to get Sojourn vol 5 TPB?

Posted by JemmyGrove (Member # 6707) on :

It may not be practical so share media that's pretty mainstream, but this might be an ideal way to share items that are old, out of print, hard to find, etc. Not that there's much you can't get on Amazon anymore . . .

EDIT: For example (and I'm revealing to all of you the profound depths of my geekiness here), I have a near-complete collection of the out-of-print Iron Crown Middle Earth Role Playing sourcebooks, campaign modules, and adventure modules. Most of them are very difficult to find and can get pretty expensive. Not that anyone would be interested in those, of course. [Wink]
