You are sharing a bagel with someone. Do you keep the top half that has all the seeds on it? Or do you give it to that special someone and take the less-seedy bottom half for yourself? If you want the top half, it is not true love. If you would rather see your beloved have the top half -- true love.

"1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails."

1 Corinthians 13:1-8.

That's where I get my definition.

Love is an ever evolving thing that is different for every single person. Love often comes, and often goes, but every time it is better than the time before, but the time before was true love also.

Sinclair Lewis, in "Elmer Gantry":
quote:
"In the hustle and bustle of daily life I wonder how many of us stop to think that in all that is highest and best we are ruled not by even our most up-and-coming efforts but by Love? What is Love— the divine Love of which the—the great singer teaches us in Proverbs? It is the rainbow that comes after the dark cloud. It is the morning star and it is also the evening star, those being, as you all so well know, the brightest stars we know. It shines upon the cradle of the little one and when life has, alas, departed, to come no more, you find it still around the quiet tomb. What is it inspires all great men—be they preachers or patriots or great business men? What is it, my brethren, but Love? Ah, it fills the world with melody, with such sacred melodies as we have just indulged in together, for what is music? What, my friends, is music? Ah, what indeed is music but the voice of Love!"

Of course, Elmer was swiping that bit from Robert Ingersoll, "Speech on Religious Intolerance":
quote:
Love is the only bow on Life's dark cloud. It is the morning and the evening star. It shines upon the babe, and sheds its radiance on the quiet tomb. It is the mother of art, inspirer of poet, patriot and philosopher. It is the air and light of every heart— builder of every home, kindler of every fire on every hearth. It was the first to dream of immortality. It fills the world with melody— for music is the voice of love. Love is the magician, the enchanter, that changes worthless things to Joy, and makes royal kings and queens of common clay. It is the perfume of that wondrous flower, the heart, and without that sacred passion, that divine swoon, we are less than beasts; but with it, earth is heaven, and we are gods.

Oracle: It means know thy self. I wanna tell you a little secret, being the one is just like being in love. No one needs to tell you you are in love, you just know it, through and through

All true knowledge can be found in movie quotes.

Mr. Funny, I thought maybe you were going to post HK-47's thoughts on love:

quote:
Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope...Love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticule, and together, achieving a singular purpose against statistically long odds.

Great book Avadaru, I had to read it in AP English in High School. One of the few books I was satisfied with at the end.

...Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken.
It is the star to every wand'ring bark
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

(Not sure I agree with all of that, but it's a wonderful poem. [Big Grin] )

Completely and utterly disagree. I suppose that could be a subset of platonic love, although it certainly doesn't define it. Romantic love, however, needs to be returned at a reasonably equal level. Otherwise it's just a crush.

You cut the bagel in half the other way, and then give the side with more junk on it to the other person, because they ordered something liberally dosed with raisins - which, unknown to them, drive you nuts.

I hate seeds on my bagel. Luckily, my husband cares not either way.

Now, an onion bagel would be a different question.

That's a hard question, 'cuz I've loved a number of people, and though I'd describe the emotion of each as 'love', the feeling is very different. Even the feeling you'd expect to be the same- the feeling I had for two of my girlfriends, or each of my sisters- is very different.

Love is wanting to understand someone. Love is often feeling you're a better person when you're around them; loving yourself is feeling you're also a good person when you're alone. Love is wanting to help someone on their journey- maybe accompany them for a time- maybe help them chart their course.

Love can be the sweetest feeling in the world, and that's why it can be so awful to lose. Losing love is losing part of yourself, the you that was when you were around that person you loved and feeling love for that person.

There are people I love who I would die for, people who I love who I would donate a kidney for, travel a thousand miles for, give blood for. And there are people I love who I wouldn't do any of these things for, oddly enough, perhaps because their journeys have gone long enough and far enough and they've chosen their way and many of them wouldn't want me to.

Ketchupqueen, I was thinking that same sonnet. It's the only one I can recite from memory.

quote:
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
Oh no, it is an ever fixed mark
Which looks on tempests and is never shaken,
It is The Star to every wand'ring bark
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not times fool, though rosey lips and cheeks
Within his bending sicle's compass come.
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Tante, what you describe is self-sacrifice or even altruism. Love is often knowing that your beloved prefers the bottom of the bagel. Or the best love is often the complete dance of offering the top, your beloved refusing it because he loves you too, and you agreeing to cut the bagel into two "u"s, so you both get the full bagel experience. Always being the giver, though, is almost as selfish as never being the giver.

Love is like unto the seasons of fruit. Ripe and Bitter are some of the flavors that you can experience. Some occasions you will experience both at the same time. On others it will only be the lightest sensation.

You are the tastebud, you decide how you associate good and bad.

The people you love are beautiful. No matter what empirical traits, the people you love become absolutely beautiful.

Love can make a summer fly
or a night seem like a lifetime
Love changes everything
Now I perish in its flame!
Love will never, ever let you be the same.

That was very well said Sterling. [Smile]
