With great joy, I announce the birth of my daughter, Aerin Amelia Marx, on September 12, 2005 at 10:48 a.m. (weight: 1 pound 12 ounces, height: 13 inches).

I was only 26 weeks and one day along when she was born. Her apgar was 5 and 8, which is extraordinarily high for that gestational age. She cried real baby cries when she was born and when I heard that, it was truly the most beautiful moment of my life. They did intubate her because they don't want her lungs to work too hard. The most extraordinary thing is that she had meconium (basically, baby's first poo), which usually doesn't develop until later. Luckily, none got in my uterus.

I did have a C-Section. While it wasn't an emergency, it was done quickly because my membrane had ruputured and I was very dilated. She was also breech and they couldn't possibly have turned her. Plus, at 26 weeks, you don't want her to go through the trauma of regular labor.

Aerin is doing spectacularly well. She's already breathing room air, much sooner than I expected. She's still on a ventilator, but her breathing is great. She had her first blood transfusion at approximately 4:00 a.m. and it went very well - her pressure went right back up. Preemies generally require several blood transfusions because the doctors have to test their blood and preemies don't have much to begin with. We had our first little setback - her ductus arteriosus (a short blood vessel that connects the main blood vessel supplying the lungs to the aorta, the main blood vessel that leaves the heart) didn't close (it's open in unborn babies to allow blood to bypass the lungs, since oxygen for the blood comes from the mother). They're treating her with Indocin, which I took to stop my contractions, and we'll get another echo tomorrow evening or Thursday morning. I'm not too worried, because Indocin is very effective in treating this condition. Also, the cardiologist told Andrew that otherwise her heart looks great. She's doing much better than anyone would have expected - the neonatologists and nurses beam at us when we visit her.

She's also really beautiful. Every doctor and nurse comments on how gorgeous she is. She looks like a baby, just in miniature (some preemies don't look like babies for a while). She has a full head of black hair, but her eyebrows and eyelashes are blonde! Her little head is perfectly round and she has huge feet (relatively speaking). She looks just like Andrew, but she has my toes.

I am so overwhelmed with joy and love for my daughter. Even though we have a long road ahead, I know in my heart that she'll be okay. She's truly a miracle baby.

I'll post pictures at some point, but it probably won't be too soon.

Thank you for all of your prayers and good thoughts - not only did they comfort and help me, but they worked for Aerin.

Y'know I do sort of feel Aerin is a communal hatrack baby - we've read the threads about the struggle to conceive, we've all hoped and prayed when things didn't go so well and now we're all so happy she's here.

[Big Grin]

It's a nice feeling of community. [Smile]

(Not, of course, to take anything away from Aerin's *real-life* parents and family - who I am sure went through much, much more than we did. But it's kinda neat. [Smile] )

imogen, I kind of feel like she's a niece or something, myself. (Or at least a second cousin.) It's kind of a special proprietary, protective feeling, isn't it? Thank you all for this amazing outpouring love and support. I consider all of you uncles and aunts.

Wonderful news! The Indocin worked - Aerin's ductus closed!!!! I am so happy. She made it through her first setback the easiest way possible. They're even going to try feeding her a tiny bit today and see how she tolerates it.

She is so fantastic. She's under a bili light and has to wear an eye mask and she hates it. She has figured out how to push it off and has the poor nurses running all day and night to put it back. Andrew and I think it's adorable. We're hoping they shut off the light soon - she doesn't look jaundiced at all to me.

I'm being discharged today with very mixed emotions. They told me yesterday and I had a mini-meltdown at the thought of leaving her. We'll see how it goes - I'm coming right back to the hospital as soon as I get settled at home. We also start our support group tonight, right here in the hospital.

They're discharging you already? You must indeed be doing well! Good for you. And the mixed emotions are understandable, but remember that they love to have mommies in the NICU. You're still going to see her, and she's not going to forget who you are. [Kiss]

That is the best news I've had all week! Congratulations to your family.

It was so hard for me to leave the hospital with Stephen in the NICU but I spent all the time sitting in the chair next to him that they would let me. They made us leave at shift changes and I did go home to sleep but slept with the phone next to me with promises they would call me immediately if there were any problems. Thankfully there weren't.

So grab some fluffy comfy slippers, its perfectly okay to wear them in public and have fun sitting and gazing at your new baby girl. What wonderful news! I am so very happy she is okay.

One of the things I did, Mrs. M, was keep a tape recording (and tape player) handy for the nurses to use for those hours they insisted I go sleep in the parent room down the hall.

On the tape I had soothing music interspersed with my voice reading stories and saying prayers and singing silly songs.

They also got really good at letting me help out with the day-to-day care of my little guy in the PICU. I helped with some of the treatments, daily care, and spent time just gently stroking some lotion on those tiny feet and hands and forehead.

*hugs to all*

Just wanted to give y'all one last update before Shabbos. Aerin is doing remarkably well. Her reports are short because there's nothing new to tell, which is always a good thing in preemies. She's finally getting good sleep now that the bili light is off and her mask is gone.

She's doing so well that they're putting a PICC line (peripherally inserted central catheter) in way ahead of schedule, so that they can take out her umbilical lines. This is a basically an IV line used to provide nutrients and medicines into a vein. The risk of clots and infection is much lower with a PICC line.

We're getting on a blanket exchange, where I sleep with a receiving blanket next to my skin and they wrap her in it so that she can smell my scent. Then I give them another one and they give me back the one that she slept in so that I can smell her scent.

We're starting a blog for her, so that I can keep everyone updated without having to email all day long. I'll let y'all know when it's up.

Thank you for your support, comfort, prayers, and good thoughts.

Any idea on if this NICU does "kangaroo care?"

[skin-to-skin for parents and preemies after the baby is stable]

Posted by Mrs.M (Member # 2943) on :

Aerin is still doing well. She's back under the bili light, but she's tolerating it much better. She had another blood transfusion today, which went well. She spends most of her time sleeping peacefully, which is the best thing for her.

We had her naming in the shul today. Her Hebrew name is Sela Shoshana bat Keren Miriam. Sela means rock, with a connotation of strength. Shoshana means lily or rose. She's named after Andrew's aunt and grandmother.

We took some pictures yesterday: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kira_marx/album?.dir=93c2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kira_marx/my_photos

CT, they do use kangaroo care. They encourage it, in fact. I am really looking forward to the time when I can start. Both of her neighbors parents were doing it today and I was a bit envious.

Me, too! She's so gorgeous, you are a very lucky woman, even though I know this will be a long road. I look at those pictures of her with her eyes open, and I can just tell that she's got a strong soul, and she's happy to be here. She is so precious. It's hard to look at her and remember how tiny she really is-- she's a "whole" baby, you know? But she'll grow. She's a tough one, that little girl. She's going to thrive with all the love I see in those pictures and expressed here. (((hugs)))

She is *gorgeous* [Smile]

She is very small, but as you said, she looks like a real baby - all perfectly formed and beautiful.

My twin cousins were very premature (24 weeks) and one looked like a monkey and the other like a very wizened alien. On the bright side, they are now two perfectly healthy, only slightly small for their size, bright, bubbly 4 year olds. I am sure Aerin will do just as well. [Big Grin]

My mind wouldn't resize at the photo with the hands, and I just see a normal size baby and giant hands. [Smile]

Thanks, y'all. I am going to print out this thread and put it in Aerin's baby book (which will probably be ready right before her wedding).

Aerin's blog is up, but it's not nearly up-to-date. I have put updates from the past few days up, so y'all can see how she's doing without waiting for me.

BTW, some of you might notice that there's a post dated this past Saturday. I didn't post on Shabbat, it lets you pre-date things.

Now, I know you're under a lot of stress. And I don't want you to feel like I'm pressuring you or anything, Heaven knows you don't need that! But reading about her sucking reminded me to wonder if the nurses have showed you the breast pump and discussed freezing whatever you're able to express for her later use. I just want you to know that that's an option if you're interested.

Thank you to those who have read and posted on Aerin's blog. It helps Andrew and I to feel like we're not going through this alone and it's so wonderful to know that so many people are pulling for Aerin.

Very extra-special thanks to expert knitter breyerchic, who sent 2 super-adorable hand-knitted hats for Aerin.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

[Blushing] wow, I'm an expert?

Thanks, I hoped you'd like them, in mid July I knit two baby hats, one for Aerin, and one for Space Opera's baby. Aerins was pink, lavender, and white, and Operababy's is lavender, blue, green, and white, they're the same size. I entered them in the community building of our county fair as a twin set, where they recieved a blue ribbon (first place) and lots of compliments.

When Aerin was born I decided she needed another hat, much smaller, solid pink with a bow on it, I'll make the other baby one as soon as he's born (to size).

Mrs. M.:

We don't have similar situations-- but Inkling spent the first week of his life in an isolette. When they moved him to a regular hospital-baby crib, it was like being able to breathe again.

Good luck.

Thanks, y'all. I feel like you've been there with us every step of the way.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Aerin is out of the NICU and in the PCN (Progressive Care Nursery). They're saying that she might even come home before her due date. She's also moved out of her isolette (you're so right, Scott) and into a bassinet. My schedule is getting extremely hectic, with feedings and unlimited holding and trying to get the house ready and pumping all day long. I've never been happier.

In case anyone wants to check in: http://aerinamelia.blogspot.com/

So*, I have to share a story. Emma and I were looking at the latest pictures of Aerin (yay!) and, after blowing Aerin some kisses (which she loves to do) and talking about babies in general and a sentence or two about "our" baby, she patted my chest. I asked her what she was doing, and she looked at me, looked at Aerin, pointed, and said, "Baby na-na." I said, "Oh, is that how the baby eats?" And she said "Yeah." "And you're a big girl, so you eat your lolly, right?" "Yeah!" (Big grin, sticks lollipop back in mouth.) It was adorable. So besides sharing the wonderful Aerin news with everyone, just wanted to let you know that you're helping Emma with her transition, and eventually with the new baby coming. [Smile]

Posted by Mrs.M (Member # 2943) on :

I'm so happy that Aerin is helping Emma, however inadvertantly! I think Emma will make a great big sister - she's so sweet and loving.

By the time Aerin is ready for a BabyCon, you might have kids, adam613. Heck, we might have another one by then.

She's coming home. Tuesday. As in, the day after tomorrow. I can't believe she'll be home for Thanksgiving. We're so very blessed.

I'm freaking out and running around trying to get everything ready. We went shopping today and got the essentials - bassinet, Pack n' Play, monitor, etc. I can't believe there's a Pack 'n Play in my dining room (it has a changing table).

You can tell Aerin's grandma that she has the real grandma look when she holds her. Emma was not sleeping and so we looked at Aerin's latest pic, and I asked if she saw the baby. She pointed to Aerin and gave her a kiss, and then without any prompting pointed to Aerin's grandma and said "Gamma!" (Grandma!) (I hadn't said anything about grandmas, she came to this conclusion based solely on the picture.) She knows that look on her face well; it's the Grandma Look, and it bodes well for the child that's the recipient of it. [Big Grin]

Blessings on your homecoming!

Just wanted to let y'all know that Aerin is doing really well. She's on very little oxygen and eating like a little piggy and charming all the nurses. She'll be home this week.

Wonderful!

That's such great news. I put Aerin on our church prayer list, I hope you don't mind.

My kids now are asking me about her a lot. "How's that baby doing - the little tiny one?" They were blown away by the picture in the blog of her in the hands - the one that really shows the scale of how little she was. They will be thrilled to hear she is going back home. [Smile]

My friend just had a baby and we spent our lunch at work today reading Aerin's blog. She really got into it.

It's the magic number! [Big Grin] (Somewhere between reaching 10-12 pounds, most babies will start sleeping through the night.)

That is the MOST adorable cute pretty little baby in the world! No offense to any other moms (or to my own kids)....

Glad things are going well for you. I remember taking an hour or so to feed my full-term firstborn, and being exhausted at the idea of having to feed him again in another hour. After about 6 weeks he got on a more livable schedule, which I guess is your baby's adjusted age. Good luck! [Smile]

She is such a cute baby.

Thanks, y'all! Aerin slept throught the night last night, too. I keep reminding myself that this might not be permanent, but a girl can dream.

I'm actually a little nervous about Aerin's looks. I don't want all of her feelings of self-worth to come from her beauty and I don't want her to be conceited, either. On the other hand, I have to admit that I take a lot of pleasure in how gorgeous she is.

SO - I love the swing, but Aerin is ambivalent about it. She loves the mirror and mobile, but she'll only go in it if she's in the mood.

Mrs. M, I can't believe I took this long to read this thread and your blog. Oh my word, what a miracle baby indeed. She is SO BEAUTIFUL! And she sounds like a remarkably smart, tough, wonderful little soul.

I got my card from you, Mrs M, and I treasure my pictures that you sent as well as your message. It really lifted my spirits.

Keep an eye on the mail - the Post Office was closed today but I plan on sending something out to you tomorrow.

Oooo...Happy, happy birthday! Yay, Aerin. Oh, I can't wait for more beautiful pictures. I adore the picture of her playing in the laundry basket. I used to do that all the time. I'd climb in and pretend I was in a spaceship, and I would rock back and forth in it. Fun times.

Posted by Goody Scrivener (Member # 6742) on :

Laundry baskets! We used to use laundry baskets as sleds down the stairs... course we were a bit older than Aerin. Auntie Kira, can the Goodlets teach Aerin how to laundryskate??? [Smile] (when she gets older, of course LOL)

Wow, Has it been a full year already?

If she looks at all like the her pictures on the blog, then she's absolutely beautiful. I suggest that her parents lock her in her room as soon as she reaches puberty and don't let her out until the judgement centers in her brain have fully developed. [Big Grin]

Ooh in the pic Mack linked she's Cribbing. Which is a horse chewing on a fence.

Oh, happy birthday, Aerin! [Big Grin] Every time I see new pictures of her, she's just more and more gorgeous.

*giggle* Breyer, it does kinda look like she's cribbing. The look on her face could almost be the I'm-sucking-air-into-my-gut-because-it's-fun expression. [Razz]
