If I remember right, in one of OSC's books on writing he said something about not writing about telepathy. Am I remembering right?

If so, what's the problem with with writing stories about telepathy? The Worthing Saga is on my all-time favorite books list, and it included telepathy of some sort as a primary ingredient.

Since some of my story ideas include telepathy, can someone stop me from making a mistake by explaining to me why it isn't a good idea to use?

I knew that you would say that.

I'm not sure of the OSC book mentioning this, but my own take would be:

Don't write about telepathy. Write about your characters. If one of your characters happens to be a telepath, fine. But people will be interested in the character, not the special ability. Don't write about magic, ninjitsu, superpowers, etc, etc... write about the characters.

I thought I knew what this thread was about before I opened it.

I was wrong. I guess I'm no telepath.

Very helpful comment, Enigmatic. Thank you. Very funny everyone else! (I didn't see it coming).

I personally get sick of having telepathy stuck into stories of mutants, or increases in intelligence, or first contact. It overwhelms other things; I'd rather it be in a story that has no other fantastic elements, or not many.

That's if it's SF. If it's fantasy, I'd be more tolerant.

What I find interesting is that from what I've read Quantum Mechanics can give an explanation for telepathy. That within our brains exists Quantum Reality… which, kinda like the Heart of Gold from Douglas Adams, exists everywhere at the same time. So if Quantum Reality is in or produced by our brains then we are all connected in some way to each other.

I'm a telepath. And I'll tell you how I know. Because I can predict that someone will read this post and comment, in a post, to themself, or mentally, on how immature this post is. Even though you'll all also be trying not to think it just to prove me wrong, it'll happen. Live with it.

So because something's funny it means it's also immature?

Not always, but I said something that could be both. Was it funny? Because that was not what I had intended.

Y'all don't seem to know the difference between being psychic and being a telepath.

I won't tell you what I think of that. [Razz]

I would almost wish I were a telepath. It sure would make taking my girlfriend's clothes off easier. [Wink]

Telepathy =! telekinesis
