There is a huge thunder brawl going on out in my skies of San Diego. [Cry] Any sympathy out there? Waa! there it goes again! The lights are flickering!

We're having a thunderstorm right now, too. But it's nothing compared to the ones we had in TX. I remember looking out the window as lightning struck the swimming pool twice in the space of 5 minutes, less than an hour after the kids of the complex cleared out of it. In CA, swimming in the rain is fun. In TX, when you're in the pool and it starts to rain, you get out quick because thunderstorms can come on so fast and unexpected.

We get really really loud thunderstorms here. Really really loud. Louder than any I'd ever experienced in Canada. The lightning has knocked out the power to our house only, or only four or five houses in our block, or that sort of thing. It strikes really close fairly often.

But maybe this is just life in the tropics?

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

eek! There it goes again! I hope the power doesn't go out. At least my Lappy has battery power so I can stay communicated with you guys should anything happen.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

(((hugs))) There, there. Now, my 18-month-old isn't scared of the thunder, so why should you be? [Kiss]

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

Because I am afraid of the dark. [Cry] I don't want the power to go out.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Well, so is she. Maybe ignorance is bliss, though.

I'll tell you what I tell her: if you close your eyes, you can't see the dark.

If I were there, I'd hold your hand and sing you a lullaby and stroke your face until you fell asleep.

That might be weird, though. Especially considering I'm only about 4 years older than you. [Wink]

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

weird, but I know it would feel good to be comforted by someone. I wish my mom would be that affectionate with me still.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Awww. [Frown]

That's what I keep my husband around for. [Wink] [Big Grin]

One question, though: if you're afraid of the dark, why are you hiding under the bed?

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

whoa, is that rain I hear?!

My Lappy keeps me company here.

*squeals* That thunder!!! Its so loud! Its raining cats and dogs!
No, really it is.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

What breed? [Wink]

I recommend playing mindless, addictive computer games. Like Chuzzle. Or watching a few episodes of your favorite tv show on DVD if you've got it. Or baking brownies, making soup, or getting yourself a cup of tea or cocoa-- all good distractions and comfort in a storm. [Smile]

Did you just recommend the game you have described as "the one with that annoying music"?

[ROFL]

dang! Its soo scary outside! Its like they're shaking giant metal sheets out there!! [Cry]
I'll make some Mexican hot chocolate, its my specialty!

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

BTW, Kabob Queen, they're this breed. I don't know about the cats though, they seem pretty ugly as well...

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

rivka, I am now thoroughly addicted. I just turn the music off (when I can; Emma likes it and wants to dance every time I play.)

Alt, Mexican hot chocolate sounds like an excellent idea. [Kiss] You'll be okay, go distract yourself. Get some cookies or something to go with it while you're in the kitchen.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Eeeew, that's one ugly dog. Maybe the cats are sphynxes?

Posted by Altáriël of Dorthonion (Member # 6473) on :

*downloads Chuzzle*

Yeah, yeah! Its those ugly bat eared things!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

rivka, she is not spoiled. Really.

Now, I will say nothing about the fact that when her Abba plays it, she always gets to dance...

That dog looks like an oversized, slightly moldy diseased rat. And I can't get it out of my head! Now, that is scary. [Angst]

It will haunt your dreams forever Kabob Queen.
BTW, that freakin' Chuzzle game IS addictive! I managed to get the triple combo trophy though. w00t for me!

the thunder subsided now, I think I'm going to my lovely bed. Dreamland is waiting for me.

Yay!

Sleep well. [Sleep]

You what the trouble with rain is? It's the fact that while I seem to have an umbrella and boots, all my coats are still over at my parents' . . . >_<

{{{Rivka}}}
I woke up to a not so sunny day filled with clouds, but at least there is no more thunder.

How common are thunderstorms in Southern CA? I've never seen one there, but I've only been a few times.

We get a handful in an average year. They're not terribly common.

Man I love thunderstorms especially with pouring rain. We had a few this summer and a bunch of us would just sit out on the front porch and watch it lightning and rain.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

JenniK is terrified of them, but I LOVE them. She was in a house that got hit, without a lightning rod, and the way near her started to burn by the electric socket in the kitchen, so I understand. [Big Grin]

Dude! What the heck are you doing on the computer?
My computer got fried last month from some stupid lightning and I turned it off! Damn stuff was right near the house and it scared the hell out of me and had me hiding in bed.

That's what I thought. We get at least a dozen huge storms a year, and thunder at some level pretty much throughout summer.

I imagine the difference in reaction is much like my reaction when I was in Pismo Beach and saw my car rocking back and forth. The other campers thought I was weird because I asked them what we should do.

"It's just a little earthquake" they said.

"The ground is moving," I said. "That's bad."

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Technically, the ground not moving would be worse. [Wink] It's really the sudden accelerations and decelerations you object to.

When we get rainstorms (and we do, including one that started last night and continued through mid-morning) the atmospheric fireworks are usually mild and short-lived. There is almost always some thunder and lightning, but not often enough to make me call it a "thunderstorm." No idea if there is an official distinction. [Dont Know]
