Go to the store and buy a lot of those super-absorbent diapers. Stack them around the outside of an interior room and set up an inflatable bed within this protective barrier on which to sleep and/or float.

Fill several gallon jugs with drinking water.

Purchase several packages of beef jerky.

Get salt tablets and vitamins.

Wear something bright yellow.

Then start a blog.

Nothing like a little hate rhetoric to start the day.
Be safe, and put everything you can up as high as you can before you go.

Do try to leave early and fill the gas tank as soon as you can. Traffic will be a nightmare, plan out an alternate route if you can. Take some maps with you.

our government's planning ain's so hot

i've been bitching about a bad situation for about two years now.

There is about a 3 mile stretch of ONE LANE highway between the only many road between Dallas and Houston.

Thank about that.

Bad.
Government.
Planning.

Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :

Fun. And of course on one lane highways, you always get stuck behind a slow-moving semi ten minutes into your trip.

Hm. Maybe I should research this phenomenon.

I recommend bringing lots of CDs that make you smile as you drive. If you're going to be in the car a long time, you may as well have good music to listen to.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Sounds like my last trip to Dallas [Smile] So much construction (on Memorial Day weekend, no less) that it was one-lane for miles at a time.

But then again, I have no suggestions as to how they can otherwise do construction and improvements.

I saw some of the "Exodus" on TV during my lunch hour. How come they don't open all lanes to outbound (change the inbound lanes to outbound) like they do in Florida?

Good idea, farmgirl.

One of my best friends and his mom are staying.

I'm waiting to find out what my girlfriend is doing. At this point it's up to her parents, unless I kidnap her. I'd like her to go with me to Dallas, but her parents still have say over her. I hope they make good plans.

I'm probably going to leave about midnight to 2 am. if i leave, if my girlfriend stays, i will have to stay.

yo.

From the NOAA Hurricane Center, Rita is now a category 5 Storm.

OK Thor, I just now read that you may not be getting out of town. Bad idea!!! This will likely be stronger than Katrina when it hits land. If you have to kidnap your girl friend to take her out of harms way, do it.

When the Hurricane hits...

..the temperature here will be 100 degrees.

wow.

Are y'all watching the news?

I'm scared to get on the highway.

Stations are already running out of gas and with traffic not moving, cars are burning lots of fuel without moving.

i'm still planning to leave at about midnight.

I REALLY, REALLY want to buy a pack of smokes.

My girlfriend and mom say no.

My spider sense, seventh sense and Jedi sense are all tingling, this really is all very biblical.

Prayers!

That seems pretty cheap of them. Do you work someplace that would even be open when most people are evacuating the city? I guess I could see someplace like a gas station or grocery store needing staff so people can get gas to evacuate or food to hole up.

You don't want a cigarette. You want a nice place to be high and dry till this is over.

Hey Thor, Hold out on the cigarette. If you can, it will be psychologically and spiritually very powerful.

Just keep telling yourself, If you can make it through Hurricane Rita without a smoke, you can make it through anything.

You are stong.

Don't lose faith in me if I smoke.

I vowed to stop when I see my girl again.

This is really, really freaky.

The city is going nuts.

Gas stations are running out of gas all over the city.

Now i'm 50% staying.

50% leaving.

Right now it's a 14 hour drive to Dallas which is usally a 4 1/2 hour drive, and gas stations are running out of gas along the way, and it's only supposed to get worse with every minute.

There is already talk of the looting problem, logical fears are that it will be much worse than New Orleans.

Houston is a beast of a city, with more guns than any other city, it could be scary here.

I've got a nice katana to keep me safe.

oh man.

this is nuts.

i'm scared to drive now.

how many tanks of gas would it take to travel for 14 hours? Can my 1984 dodge handle that?

oh wow.

my mom has a flight out for me on Southwest airlines tomorrow night at 10pm, but they may cancel the flights.

this is all minute to minute

Go With God.

oh wow.

they say over 165 mph winds will reach as high as 150 miles inland of texas.

thanks for the prayers

i love all you guys.

Thor, go. If your car breaks down or runs out of gas on the way, at least you won't be in the middle of a flood, or in the midst of lawlessness when it happens. Seriously man, I think it would be a mistake to stay.

Don't worry about the cigarette. I was hoping you'd hold out, but I certainly don't think any less of you for having given in. You can always quit tomorrow. Or even right now. It's not as though by smoking that cigarette you made an irrevocable choice or something.

I wish that there were some way to wire you some money, but I can't think of anything that would get you the money before you had to get out of there. Can you?

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Why 2 am, if I could ask? 2 am is when the body's stress hormones are at their peak. You might think that it would be less busy at that time, but a lot of other people could suddenly decide to bolt at that time. If you must wait until 2, leave on time. 2 am is also the time most likely to get in a car accident, mainly from folks falling asleep.

Do you have a 72 hour kit or anything like that to take in your car? Basically, some food that doesn't need cooking? can opener? radio with batteries?

I'll check in the morning, Thor. Hope you are able to get out safely. But if you can't, old schools used to be built with bomb shelters for the basements if you can get to one on high ground. It's also possible to walk quite far in 50 hours. Pioneer trekkers did about 15 miles a day, and that was with camping at night and knowing you had all summer to get to where you are going. I mean, you don't want to be without shelter when the storm comes, but if there are towns 15-20 miles inland, it's a possibility.

Storm- space aged monkees are so much more textural than space aged monkeys. Davey Jones was such a hot pansy.

You may have already seen this, but the Houston Chronicle's Rita blog seems to be the best source on transportation issues.

A post on the blog says that you can call 713-837-0311 for assistance evacuating, but it looks like that involves boarding an MTA evacuation bus. Not sure I'd want to do that, but if you don't have other choices....

Thanks soooo much for the help and love offered.

Part of me feels like staying, traffic is just as scary. Some say it's a 24 drive for me from here to dallas.

How many tanks of gas is that????

Looking at the link in my WorstCaseScenario thread, north and west Houston seem to be safe from ocean flooding.
But forecasters said the hurricane might stall in east Texas and continue dumping HUGE amounts of rain.
So low lying areas there might get swamped.

I hope Thor's OK. The reports this morning are saying that it is now too late to leave. Traffic coming out of the Houston areas is completely gridlocked. The highways are blocked with broken down and out of gas cars. They are trying to coordinate efforts to bring water and gasoline to people stuck on the road.

YIKES!!!

It's bizarre how ineffective all these emergency preparedness plans seem to be - at least in louisianna and texas - given all the attention we supposedly gave to planning for these after 9/11.

I expected this sort of gridlock, given that Houston is the fourth largest city and is located near water on one side. IS there a solution?

Sharing cars and, like Thor said, officially opening most of the other side of the highway. More road, fewer cars, more gas to go around, too.

I think there is a disconnect between whatever the emergency plans are and ways to make that plan better by gathering the co-operation of the people. Right now, everyone's on his or her own.

Truckers can help lead that sort of thing too.

What's weird is that all those cars are probably on those same roads every day, or near.
And the problem arose because everybody decided to leave at the same time on the same freeways...
...when spreading the load onto surface streets woulda probably prevented the current gridlock.
Had a bad thought.
Much of the city/metroplex freeways I've been on have been routed through the low passes between higher ground.
If the hurricane stalls in eastTexas&westLouisiana as forcast, Rita is expected to dump up as much as 2to3feet of rain.
And the higher areas will drain onto and flood the lower grounds, including those portions of the gridlocked freeways.

I know a guy on another forum who lives north of Houston (~60 miles, I think he said). He's decided that he's safer at his house than trapped on the freeway, but he's been out to the freeway a couple of times today to give away water and gas to the people there. He's also offered his home to an elderly couple if the roads are still blocked when the hurricane hits. It sounds like he is trying to mobilize his neighbors to help him with these projects.

Thanks for the love and the prayers.

I'm home safe in Mansfield at my mom and step dad's 50 acre, 6 dog, 16 horse paradise drinking world class margarita's with friends and family.

Watching the news.

Great news for all my pals behind in houston that it turned East and downgraded to a 3.0.

But it still will be bad.

And in the near future, i'll talk about the 14 hour drive. My step dad gave me an alternate route of 90 to 36 to 35. which was more obscure but still tough.

My girlfriend and her parents took I-45 and it took them almost 36 hours to get to dallas.

Thanks again for the love and prayers, and all the offers of help.

Hatrack rules!

Thor, I've been to Mansfield! Is the restaurant called Warehouse #1 in Mansfield still there? That is a world class restaurant. Their hush puppies are heavenly.

So glad you made it out safely! Glad the storm weakened and turned! Take care and be careful going home.

Things aren't too bad in Baton Rouge anymore. There is a lot of flooding and quite a few power lines are down, but the rain has finally stopped. I'm really worried about family of mine in Lake Charles, LA - the pictures of the flooding on the news have been pretty bad. [Frown]
