Does anyone else use Grouper? I was torn between using SoulSeek and Grouper to file-share with family and friends, and I went with grouper.

I must say I am loving it. I don't trust Kazaa, Ares, or Morpheus. I don't like/trust grabbing files off of random peoples' computers. With grouper I can choose individual folders/files to share with select people.

Does anyone know the advantages/disadvantages of Grouper over Soulseek?

I know I have had less problems with it then I had with filezilla.

It is. Coupled with a delicios way to share links and furled in a tight package, I can keep organized and share anything with anyone I care about.

This looks interesting. If you don't have a lot of people in your network of family/friends who have what you want, can you add random people to your group?

Oh man, I was hoping this would be the next in the series of freakishly large marine creatures, after that 24 lb. lobster and the catfish that weighed more than me.

A group is actually a person + everyone they have invited to share their files with. If you sign up for grouper, your user name is your group. If you were to add me into your group, since my brother is in my group, he would come with me. I don't think you can select me without my brother--since he is a part of my group.

When you create your group, you can create it public or private. You can only be allowed into a group if you are invited from the group leader (or anyone else s/he has given permission to moderate). The difference between the public and private is that the public are listed in a directory built within grouper.

I am looking at my directory now, and it is divided into these categories: Art, business, community, cultures, education, entertainment, Family/Home, game demos, health, hobbies, misc, music, photography, politics, recipes, religion, romance, sports and rec, technology, travel, University/Alum, Unspecified, video, and adult.

Those categories have between 40 and 6000 groups in them. You click the category and then a subcategory (if there is one--some categories like "technology" have subcategories like "Internet," "PC," "linux" et cetera), and it will show you all the public groups who have self identified with that category.

Here is a real life example. I just clicked on "Politics" and I see a group called Insane Asian Fish There are 4 members in that group. (I heard the max a group could have is 20 or 40, but I saw a group with 45). Their caption says:

Ok, I am going to try and join, so I click on request invite. A box shows up with my email address I used to set up grouper and a dialog box. They have a question:"Do you JSA?" I write my answer, click submit, and they will get my email with my answer.

If they decide to let me join, they will click "Accept" on the auto-email, and next time I log on to grouper, I have their invite.

My account is private, so I am not in the member's directory, but I can still invite anyone into my group or be invited into anyone's group.

Although you can't search for a specific file easy, Grouper is a great way to share stuff between you and someone you trust. It is also good to be exposed to new stuff in an interest you have.

One of my groups is Computer Repair. I have got so many neat applications I never heard of and instruction manuals on how to repair hard-drives.

It is super-cool!

Kojabu, I need your grouper email address to invite you, not just the username. You will get the invite via email.
