That is pretty darn cool. Now you've made me want a Fab Lab here so I can make things too. It's a great way to harness the uncollected creative energy out there, though.

Very cool! I think the fab lab would always be more expensive than mass production for any given item or creation, but for innovation and trying out ideas for new products, as well as for producing those one of a kind solutions that suit only one specific situation, the fab lab would be ideal.
I wonder how it differs from just a workshop? I mean my family has had a fab lab (machine shop and general fabrication workship) for all of my life. How is this better than that? We spent way less than $40k on ours, by the way.
Could you come up with a cool idea that was a solution to a problem you had, then upload the program for that device to the internet, to be downloaded and reproduced in any fablab worldwide? That would be really interesting. I'd expect the state of the art in nearly every field to just take off, if such a thing came about.
Oh also perhaps people who were designers could just work online, getting information about each new application that customers wanted to design a new system or product to satisfy, then doing the design and emailing the program for the finished product to the customer. The customer could try it out and send feedback, allowing the designer to tweak the specs a bit and send a revised design. This would essentially let engineers do their thing from anywhere in the world. Wouldn't that be awesome?
