I haven't seen a news story on this yet, but I've got a subscription to an email service from the US Geological Survey that sends out notices of earthquakes over whatever magnitude you choose. This one's location is listed as follows in the email.

Japan more than any other nation has built with earthquake safety in mind, so hopefully this won't be as devastating as it would be elsewhere, but still, 6.5 is a pretty big quake.

Wow, what a great site! Noemon, you have good links. I hope the earthquake hasn't caused much damage. When I was looking at going to the area to work, to the islands north of Japan off the coast of Siberia, the enormous numbers of earthquakes as revealed by Google Earth sort of helped dissuade me from the idea.

That area of the world is definitely seismically active, that's for sure. I was planning at one point to teach ESL in Japan, and the earthquakes were definitely a factor in my decision not to go there.

How cool that the only impact that a 6.4 (or is it 6.2? The US Geological Survey and BBC News seem to disagree on this) magnitude earthquake only causes rail delays and a brief airport closure.
