Achille. Nuff said. I love psycho villans.
But actually, I think that the Joker is a pretty cool dude. I wonder how crazy these two bastards could get if they ever met. Which is obviously impossible since Achille was killed by Bean...

1. Mr. Freeze
2. Darth Vader
3. The Joker

By far and away the best...

Pinky and the Brain

Were they really villains though?

Hey, Brain tried to take over the world every day. [Smile]

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Alright, then he's as much of a villain as Professor Chaos on South Park.

Rita Repulsa came closer on Power Rangers than Brain ever did. Brain was just cooler about it.

I think the Queen/Witch in Snow White ranks quite high. She always gave me the chills.

I'd have to say Lucifer. Not only has he managed to (pretty successfully) battle a supreme diety for thousands of years, but his reputation has become such that millions of evil-doers everywhere give him credit for things he didn't even need to have a hand in.

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

"You brought Red Jello to the picnic? You hussy. Red is Lucifer's color. Who helped you pick Red, was it, oh I don't know...SATAN!!!!"

Yes, but the Church Lady on SNL is more evil. She did evil and had you believing she was fighting Lucifer while doing it.

>>Not only has he managed to (pretty successfully) battle a supreme diety for thousands of years

Well. . .from a certain point of view, the Devil is just a tool for God to further His plan.

From that POV, Lucifer isn't successful, he's pathetic.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Or simply someone doing his job. [Wink]

Posted by Rakeesh (Member # 2001) on :

Emperor Palpatine, most especially in Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith (novel). I think it's just the voice in the movie and the friendly evil in the book that makes him #1.

Yeah, I knew that was coming, but by that standard, all villainy is just a tool to further God's plan, so Lucifer is still the top tool, no?

100 Ways to Become an Evil Villain

Posted by starLisa (Member # 8384) on :

Define "great". Do you mean, "Wow, that villain is great!" or the worst and most villainous villain of all time?

Posted by pfresh85 (Member # 8085) on :

Yeah, we need to define what great is. If it's the most successful villain (meaning successful at doing the villain thing), I'd probably have to go with Joker. I mean he shot a Robin and a Batgirl (paralyzing the latter), he killed a Robin, he's always pushing Batman's buttons, he kills at least one person every time he breaks out of Arkham Asylum. He's just an insane villain.

Posted by starLisa (Member # 8384) on :

Not as insane as Batman is for letting him live. Someone should sic Wonder Woman on him.

Posted by pfresh85 (Member # 8085) on :

Batman came close to killing him recently (maybe 2 years ago?), but Commisioner Gordon stopped him (saying that Batman would be as bad as the Joker if he killed him).

No votes for the Operative in Serenity?

He was fanatical, but rational and intelligent about it. He also had the backing of the galactic powers that be. Scary.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

He's out, in my mind, because he was human enough to convert in the end. A truely "great" villain, is a villain to the bitter end. [Wink]

Hans from Die Hard

I don't know.. real life psychopaths get me. (ie, BTK Killer, McVeigh, Bundy, etc.) Those guys are the real evil villains of the world [Frown]

But, for a ltierary/fiction villain.. Probably Iago. But Hannibal Lecter ranks up there.

Jim Gordon is a twit. The bloody Joker paralyzed his daughter, for crying out loud.

Of course, by the time this Crisis is over, she'll probably be all better.

Roy Batty (Rutger Haure) - Blade Runner

I dug him.

Also, I have always been partial to the Wicked Witch of the West, from The Wizard of Oz.

Oh! Also, Gary Oldman in Leon and in The Fifth Element!

How about the Master Control Program from Tron?

Or Q from ST:TNG?

Or Baron Harkonnen from Dune?

Or Link from the Belisarius series?

I'm so, so glad no one's said Sephiroth.

My vote goes to Doctor Robotnik. Or for pure, unadultered evil with zero sympathizable qualities, Kevin of Sin City fame.

I'm going to go with Bill Sykes. At the moment, it'll change when I start listening to/watching/reading something else.

I think The Killing Joke gave us a pretty good look at Gordon's reasons for not letting Batman kill the Joker after that happened, too. He's definitely an idealist, but I don't think being against cold-blooded revenge makes him a twit.

For comic book villains, the Joker has always been one of my absolute favorites. The whole "Should Batman kill the Joker?" debate is revisited so well so many times (The Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Hush, and especially in Kingdom Come, to name a few) that I have a hard time picturing Batman's central story arc without the Joker. Plus, he's got style, he delights in all the horrible things he does, and he's the perfect counterpoint to the Batman. I like the idea that the best weapon against the greatest detective's methodical logic and investigation is just sheer insanity.

Actually, just a few issues ago in Birds of Prey, her paralysis was cured (due to some kind of techno organic thing or something). So yeah, she's technically all better now.

Recently, somebody said that the Psycho Villian is a cop-out, since his motivation is that he's crazy.

I think it CAN be, if you use it to replace any reasonable motivation at all. Why did he do that? Because he's crazy!

But I also think you can have a villian who does really awful stuff that is still understandable. Like that guy in Hart's Hope who rapes a little girl? No, wait... that was the good guy [Confused] In any case, I thought it was really cool that she gave him diarhea for 300 years. Heh, heh.

Wait. What were we talking about?

Oooh, shiny! *wanders off*

It was more like he was cursed with irritable bowel syndrome -- alternating constipation and diarrhea. Also embarrassing itches. Now that's a villain with a creative streak.

Pfft! RoboZombieHitler was a way better villian.

Another interesting villian was Rasputin in the Hellboy comics. He's not quite as cool in the movie, but still a great villian.

Hannibal lector.

Senator Palpatine/Darth Sidious. He really was a mastermind villain.

The Master was cool.

Professor Moriarty though was a good villain.

Jig Saw is a good villian.

You know, the only way to settle this is going to be a "Best Villian Ever Game. It's Fun!"

i think the guy from the saw movies is a pretty nasty villian. or kevin spacey's character from seven. Sick and demented views, and the utmost determination to finish what they started.

Gargamel--the Un-Smurfiest of them all. (You can tell by the smell Gargamel is in the Dell)

Karl Rove--he's so evil, he has to be fictional.

Al Gore--he's so evil--and wooden, he has to be fictional. Hey, he invented the Internet after all, and we all know that's the great second aunt of all evil.

The Shadows--see B5--destoyer of worlds, bringer of Chaos, enslavers of men's minds.

pS I second a showdown list to weed out the evil wannabe's from the essences of pure nastiness.

That's why I put in Gargamel. I want to see his obit.

Okay, I put Kevin Spacey's guy in Se7en and Rutger Hauer's guy in The Hitcher in a dead heat. But both of them lose to the people who made those movies. Evil, evil, evil.

Sephy HAD been the first thought on my mind since I had just watched the mpeg of Aerith's death. (I cried, yes)

But now that I think about Sevies, I really like Sevothtarte from Angel Sanctuary. That guy was one sick little bastard. As if putting a needle behind Gabriel-sama's neck wasn't enough to put him no.1 on the list.

Megan, if that's intentional, it's really funny. If not, maybe not so much.

That is, if this is the movie that Tom's thinking of.

I agree about the Kevin Spacey villians! I am much more creeped out by the sneaky, quiet villian than someone loud and obvious like the Joker (although I loved Jack Nicholson playing him).

Posted by Lalo (Member # 3772) on :

Magneto, far and above. He's not a villain, he's an antihero -- I always find myself rooting for him, or at least his later incarnations when he battles to save and protect his people rather than doing the boring usual let's-kill-humanity-what-else-is-there-to-do-we're-villains twirling-mustache crap typical of "villains." He's noble, he's honorable, he's powerful, he takes on impossible odds and constant betrayal alone, the burden borne on his tired shoulders for no reason but altruism and selflessness. He's earned our respect time and time again simply for the odds he battles and the desperate solitude of his life. We disagree with him, but it's hard to argue with his experiences -- and, after all, he acts only to protect others from the hells he's suffered through. He's noble, simply misguided -- and even that's debateable. I love him.

Also, the Joker, but not because he was "creepy" -- because, as someone said, he's the perfect counterpoint to Batman. Batman is fear personified, terrible and cold -- he's what everyone should and does fear, but he fights the good fight. Joker is a similar oxymoron, taking the familiar form of a clown, but violating the stereotype of childhood joy usually associated with clowns by instead of becoming happiness personified, taking caricaturization in the opposite direction -- and becoming insanity, cruelty, pain. He's brilliant. I can't wait to see what Christopher Nolan will do with him.

I would cite some characters from A Song of Ice and Fire, but there are no villains there, not for more than a few chapters.

And, of course, the Brain, but we all knew that...
