Just got back from the theaters, and boy, I think Jarhead was a great movie. I loved the story, and whole theme to the movie. This gets the spot as my favorite movie of the year (keep in mind I have not seen Serenity).

It seemed like the movie lasted for at least 5 hours though, maybe longer. I'm not sure what brought upon this phenomenon, but my friends noticed it too.

So, what do you guys think? I'm also interested to hear what you thought if you've read the book, and how it compares.

I've never heard of the book. But the movie looks very interesting to me. I wish I could see it, but I, unfortunately, cannot.

My roommate is interested in seeing it, but she has no idea what the plot is. Care to give a small, largely spoiler-free synopsis?

Well, that explains how you could have a favorite movie that is not Serenity. [Wink]

Basically, it follows the story of a marine (as told by him), most of it in the gulf. It takes place during Desert Storm. I just find it extremely well done and interesting, because the story shows you all the aspects of his life, and the acting is great. It's not so much of an action movie at all, but you get pretty into it. I think it might be more of a guy movie, but I think that comes from the fact that they say "f*ck" every two sentences, and that there is a lot of sexual humor. It's definitely appropiate story-wise 100% though. So, if it sounds like it appeals, by all means, go out and see it!

***Somewhat spoilerish***

I thought the movie was well made, had good acting, etc. However, the plot and story was very lacking. I, like Hamson, felt that the movie seemed to last for hours and hours. I attribute this to the fact that nothing really ever happened in the movie. The entire plot felt like it was building up to something, but never really got there. It was just a bunch of guys sitting in the desert waiting to shoot something. This may be true to the Gulf War, but it didn't make a very compelling movie.

Oh, and see Serenity.

I also just came back from seeing it. I thought it was really good, really well done. I, however, did not notice this whole phenomenon of it lasting hours and hours.

I thought it was well paced as well. Great show.

Trailers looked pretty good. Rottentomatoes reviewers disliked it, though *shrug*

I am going to see the movie perhaps next week. I've heard a lot of mixed reactions about the book from folks in the Marines. A common reaction seems to be that a lot of people think that he embellished a lot of his story though.

***Minorly spoilish***

Yeah, I kept thinking it was building up to a big fight, or any fight or something, but alas, it did not.

As for Serenity, I was still finishing the series opening week, and I was really busy with school stuff the next 2 weeks or so of it being out, and then it just seemed to have disappeared.
