Until my operating system crashes. A while back I wrote a post about how my computer's hard drive sounded like it was churning butter. Well, it finally crashed. I went out and bought a 300GB harddrive for $100!! Woohoo!!! [Party]

I reinstalled windows, put in my product activation key, and it says it is invalid. I called the number and the computer voice said it was invalid and I need to buy a new one. She/it never even gave me an opportunity to talk to someone to explain what happened. It is a legitimate copy of XP!! I have the key. I have used it for years, kept my comp udated, and now I need to go and buy a new OS.

GRRR ARRGH...I HATE MICROSOFT!!! I wish I could play Guildwars on Linux.

What should I do. I don't want to pay for something I paid for when I originally bought my computer. [Wall Bash]

E-mail them and tell them you're going to sue if they don't let you install your legit copy on your new comp. (You don't, of course, have to do it. Just threaten.)

Personally, I wouldn't even bring up the posibility of a lawsuit until other options are exhausted.

I hope I can't contact anyone because it is the weekend. I know when I got my new graphics card, there came a time I had to reformatt my drive and my key did not work. I called in and they pushed it through. Now they wont connect me to anyone. I will try again on Monday.

I wish I had anything like 300 GB *has fourty GB!*. I asked for another Hard Drive for Christmas though.

Speaking of harddrives... something on mine, or the thing itself, seems to be having issues "kicking in" when I start the computer up. The fan comes on but there's no other reaction. It's only after I turn the computer off and turn it on again (once yesterday, twice today) that finally it kicks in a starts up normally.

Should I be panicking?

I had an issue where my config changed enough that I was told to call. I got an operator on the line ("0" is your friend), and they did their magic, and I was able to use my XP again.

MS has never given me a problem with activation. You probably just need to get through to a human being.

Fugu... Cedega DOES NOT WORK. I tried it, believe me. Cedega has some serious issues.

Alcon, Cedega does work in many cases. It does have some issues, but properly set up it can be very effective. There's a reason people pay their subscription fee (though it is open source, with the source provided, so if you so desire you can attempt to build from source yourself).

I have never heard of Cedega. Is that like a mod or something that lets you play windows games in Linux?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Cedega is a commercial version (though still open source, of course) of Wine, a method of running Windows programs under Linux. Cedega focuses on compatibility with games, and among other things, certifies that certain games can be run under it (if you're paying their subscription fee, of course).
