Okay, I am thinking I may have to break down, and get a paypal account, but was wondering if any of the paypal users here had an opinion on it.

Is it worth the time, and money it costs?

Does it cost money?

Is it reliable?

Or anything else I'm forgetting to to think to ask.

It is free if you are using it to pay for something, like on ebay. It cost money if you are a vendor seilling things.

I have had no problems at all with it.

It's free and I love it. You do have to watch for scams. Be sure not to respond to emails asking you for your password. The paypal site is an https site, not http, so always be sure the "s" is on there before you log on.

I've used it for years and have never had any money. You don't have to pay anything to send money, but if you are selling things and accepting paypal it will cost you money to receive cash from your customers.

A lot of people have chronic PayPal problems, but in recent years those stories have been drying out. Personally, I've been using PayPal since 2001 and have never had a problem that couldn't be resolved. They're quite good about resolving errors - I once received a payment for an item that magically disappeared on my end but not on the buyer's. We got on the phone with them and they resolved it more or less immediately (within a business day), with a fee credit to boot.

So far I like it. It can be a real bitch with the ads on their visa cards and such.

Oh, and it's definitely worth the money: their rates for accepting money are comparable to any credit card acceptance for a retail store.

Fahim had an account with them. It can't be used from some countries (like Sri Lanka), and if you're in one of those countries, PayPal freezes your account. They held on to his money (several hundred dollars) for half a year or longer. To get his money back, he ended up emailing them a bunch, which got ignored, writing letters, which got ignored, and making phone calls, which finally, someone paid attention to. They also charged a handling fee ($50 or more, I think) before finally sending the money several months after they promised they'd send it.

When you have problems with them, they don't give a rats patoutie about fixing them in any kind of reasonable time line, or about responding to questions, or anything like that. So, be warned.

That's true. We use them 'cause we need to (ebay and such), but Jeff had real problems when they had the wrong CC on account. *sigh* It was a major pain in the rear.

I've never had any problems with them. I won't bid on stuff on ebay unless I can use paypal since it is so easy to use.

Also, if you move a lot be sure to keep your information in the profile updated. I set up an account when I was in college, and hadn't used it for several years. I no longer had access to the email account assigned to it, so they couldn't email me my password. Then they wanted to call the phone number in the profile, which was not mine anymore. Then they were going to mail the information to the address on file, which luckily was my mother's address and she still lives there. I really don't know what would have happened if I hadn't had access to that address anymore.

At any rate, I decided to try a few more possibilities for the password before telling them to mail the information, and I actually managed to remember it. But it was quite the process to go through.

I haven't had any problems with them, but I also haven't used them all that much. I also never leave money in my account: I only transfer over as much as I need for the payment. If you do that you shouldn't have any issues with them freezing your money.
