Yey! I just found out Romania has voted to stop compulsory military service! The idea itself of performing it wasn't a problem for me. It was more the fact that I knew that military service SUCKS - as in: not done properly, because of lack of money and means - and it would have meant I would either have had to go back for it and then try to come back to France - quite hard - or I would have had to pay in order not to do it. (before you ask, yeah, it was legal to pay; I didn't say bribe. [Wink] )

So there. One little thing that makes me happy. This and starting to play Civilization IV. Onward, my "volunteer" warriors! [Evil Laugh]

i think that it was churchill that said something about a voluntary military being bad. Anyway, good for you, and i hope i didn't make the churchill thing up.

In Germany they have something like this. But they can do non-military service if they wish. It might be nice...

I very much doubt Churchill would have said anything of the sort; after all, the regular army that built the British Empire was purely voluntary enlistment, and they were some of the best soldiers of their time, as Churchill would have been well aware. There just weren't enough of them; but when the German army attacked the BEF for the first time, in 1914, the officers thought they were facing machine guns. They weren't; but the British soldiers had been trained to fire so rapidly and accurately that they stopped three times their number of conscripts, dead in their tracks.

Cool indeed. Although I kind of overdid it with Civ 4 yesterday. I played for a couple of minutes from around 11PM to... 4AM. Major oops. This morning my alarm tried to wake me at 8:30, but somehow I managed to stop it. Finally woke up 15 min before my class. (9:45) Phew, talk about luck!

Um, yeah.

This is why I go to bed same time as hubby. And it's why he reminds me when it's time for me to make lunch. And...
