I know, we've done this before, but it looks like this is going to be a more robust version, with more people allowed to have entries.

The irony is that I can't actually see the map, because of the restrictions my work has in place. I was able to create it, and was able to put in an entry for myself, but I can't see it at all. Oh well, it'll be there when I get home.

Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :

Hm. I don't see the entry for you, Noemon.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Yeah, I was going to say that. No matter, you can add yourself again. [Smile]

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Really? But you do see the map, right? Does it start on a global view?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Okay, I've added myself again, but I'm still flying blind, so I have no idea if it actually "took".

Posted by jennabean (Member # 8590) on :

Well a bunch have shown up! Neat!

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

You're there now, Noemon. And it does start on a global view.

Posted by jennabean (Member # 8590) on :

(including you, Noemon)

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

Pretty cool idea!

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I can't wait to actually be able to see this.

Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :

Fitz, now I'm wondering if you know my cousins. Know a young couple by the name of Burnham?

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Wow. I'm glad you can zoom in, because with the size of the pins they kind of block everything on the initial view.

Posted by Fitz (Member # 4803) on :

Sorry Brinestone, I can't say that I've had the pleasure of making their acquaintance.

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

I never realised how far south I am! I'm on the same level as South Dakota! That's so weird!

Posted by jennabean (Member # 8590) on :

fitz, Edmonton's not THAT cold! [Wink]

Posted by Fitz (Member # 4803) on :

Yeah, you're right jenna, but like most Edmontonians I love to bitch about the weather.

Posted by jennabean (Member # 8590) on :

And like most Calgarians, I like to brag about Chinooks.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Hmm. You can zoom in to a very detailed street view, but I wonder how it decides where to put the pin? It looks like it's pin-pointing an exact addess, but ours is miles from where we actually live. It put us in one of the new housing developments on the far side of I-80.

Edit: Whoah. If you switch to satelite view it points to a specific house. Not ours, though.

I saw something in the profile section that lets you place the pin more precisely. I didn't play with it, though.

It centerpoints your zipcode, I think.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

They are very, very close to my actual location.

Posted by fiazko (Member # 5812) on :

Yeah, mine's only about a mile off. Maybe less.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

It looks like it picks a center point of your zipcode. At least that's how it looks on mine. Noemon, what's the admin password? Somehow it duplicated my shoutout. I'd like to fix it, or you can if you will. Thanks!

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

I'd like to point out that Toronto isn't even marked on the large scale map (I mean, with only significant cities). And it's not exactly insignificant. And Vaughn's marked.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

quote:
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city), and the fourth and fifth digits representing more specific areas, such as small towns or regions of that city. The main town in a region (if applicable) often gets the first ZIP Codes for that region; afterwards, the numerical order often follows the alphabetical order.
If you live in a rural area, the center of your zip is most likely not as close to your physical location. If you live in a large apartment complex or urban area it's probably pretty close.

Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :

Hehehe. Jon Boy and I put the same zip code but ended up in slightly different locations, neither of which is all that close to where we really live.

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

If you click on "My profile" on the page with all the links to the left, you can move your marker. I moved mine and Niki's to point right at our living room (using the satellite feature).

This is such better software than the previous ones we have tried [Smile] .

Edit: It doesn't appear that my change has been reflected on the main page yet, I wonder how long it takes to refresh it.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I did that, only now I'm on the map twice. <oops>

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

I live smack downtown, and the marker is way the heck out in the barely developed area. The only way that could be the center of the zip code is if they included a lot of unincorporated land on the theory that it might be part of the city some day.

I'm not really complaining, though, because I'm not sure I'd want to have it pointing to our actual house. I just hope that the poor souls who live in the house it is pointing to don't get dog poo on their porch the next time I tick someone off online. [Angst]

This does have serious stalker potential. I didn't think about that. hmm...

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I meant that as in, "Oh dear, this might not be safe." As opposed to "Goody! Maps!"

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

lol - sure, katharina

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Jake - this is such a huge change for you -- from your months of hiding and not letting anyone even know which STATE you were from, to now create a map that pinpoints you! Does this mean Hatrack has successfully broken through any paranoia? [Smile]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I don't see a pin for Noemon. [Wink] Maybe his paranoia is protecting him nonetheless.

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

you're assuming he's giving you correct information!

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

You don't see him Kat? I see him both on the map and listed - Dayton, Ohio.

FG

Posted by lucy hummer (Member # 7740) on :

Ooh I love the pinpoint on satelite where it shows megan lives, though I'm pretty sure that's not quite accurate.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

there's no sense adding myself right now, is there? or maybe I'll just say i'm in Lux already.

Posted by lucy hummer (Member # 7740) on :

But it puts me really (like five miles across two major highways) far from where i live, and I have no clue how to fix it.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

I'm not sure how you can, lucy. I don't see the link that Xavier was referring to to move the pin.

I didn't use my real address, but the zip code of the town nearest to me, because it is actually closer to me that the town of my address. And being out in the country, there is no way to get more specific, even though zoomed in I can see my road...

FG

Posted by lucy hummer (Member # 7740) on :

It more or less has me in the middle of a wetlands that can't be developed for medical space, on the other side of the "main" highway in town, I'm pretty sure the zipcode isn't even the same over there.

If you created a Frappr account, then click on your name up at the top left corner of the page. Then click on "My Profile" in the list on the left. On the right of the page there is a zoomed in map where you can change the location of the pointer. Then click on "Save Marker Position" and it's done.

--Mel

Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :

Okay guys, at the top left corner of the page is a "My Groups" link. Click it.

This will show up on the left:

quote:
My Places
All My Places
My Restaurants
My Clubs/Bars
My Shopping
My Work/School
My Miscellaneous

Edit My Places

My Frappr
My Profile
My Messages
My Groups
My Photos
My Account

Click on "My Profile".

There will now be a small map on the right side of your screen. Move your pin where you want it to be.

Click on the "Save Marker Position" button below the map.

And now you are ready to be stalked! [Big Grin]

I'm really surprised -- there is not yet a single California entry. Where are all our west coast people?

Posted by human_2.0 (Member # 6006) on :

It put me on a freeway. So I moved it to my exact house... I guess I'll have to swallow my paranoia...

Nobody here would do anything like egg my house, right? Or worse yet, go through my garbage and steal my discarded credit card applications? Well, I got a shredder, so you don't even need to try! So there. Paranoia solved.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

This looks cooler than the simpler pushpin ones I've seen before. I just used my area code to add me and it got the city right, I didn't bother to go in depth on the position. I like that the pictures are attached.

Posted by mistaben (Member # 8721) on :

I need help! I went ahead and created an account after adding myself, so I have two pins. The south one is correct.

This is really smooth.

Fitz, how did I not know you were in Edmonton? Or did I just forget? I lived there for a decade!

Ugh. I created an account just to correct the inaccurate information, but creating an account does not, as far as I can see, allow me to edit the erroneous city name.

*sigh*

I added myself.

My pins not showing up yet - but when it does it'll be long way away from all the other pins!

The map is nifty. [Smile]

Okay, I just found out how you can request them to (manually) add cities. So hopefully they can eventually get it right. [Smile]

I'm not sure, though I think I've mentioned it a few times. Born and raised Edmonton boy, that's me. I do recall you posting that you had lived here, and thinking that was pretty cool. As far as I know, the only other Edmontonian who posts with any frequency is solo, and I haven't seen him post for a long time.

I was so excited to see someone in Africa, until I clicked on it and found out they weren't really in Africa. [Frown]

My marker ended up pretty close, within a mile, and I nudged it to within a few blocks of my house but not exact. That's as accurate as y'all need. [Razz]

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

Mine'a actually about 4 blocks from my house.

But since I didn't start an account I can't change or move it.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Ah well, Fitz, I probably forgot. Goldfish memory here.

I went to Ross Shep and lived on the other side of Westmount mall, also lived near WEM, and mostly lived in Old Strathcona.

I gotta tell you, I love Edmonton. It's a great city!

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

I don't know how to "unpin" myself to the map. 'Cause it actually marked me across the street at my neighbor's house, and now he's banging on my door asking if I know who stuck a giant pink balloon on his garage. He suspects me, because last time we did this I had a similar giant pink balloon stuck on my front porch. It was really hard to get rid of that thing.

Posted by lucy hummer (Member # 7740) on :

I just fixed mine, and I'm now either my house, or the house up the hill, so that's close enough, it was on the other side of the highway.

Alrighty, I added myself. This is indeed a cool program.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

Added myself - it's wrong by about 25 blocks, but what the hell.

Mistaben, we're practically neighbors.

Princess, I pass within 2 minutes of your house when I drive to work every morning.

[Edit] Ok, I figured out how to fix myself, huttah!

heh, from the satellite images of my town (specifically constructin status, parking patterns, status of renovations at the train station up the street, and the vehicle in my parking space), i can pinpoint when this was taken fairly well. I think that's a little bit freaky...

Well, it took some doing, but I actually got mine in the correct town without giving away my true zip code. Of course, I had to make an account to do it. What an unexpected pain this turned out to be.

Edit:

While you're at it, you can remove the "Verily the Younger" entry for Brooklyn, NY. That was my failed attempt to move my entry before I realized you had to actually sign up before you could move anything.

I know! If you'd told me a year ago that I'd not only be placing my name and face on a Hatrack map, but would be doing it on a map that I'd created, I'd probably have laughed at you.

The change has to do with a lot of things, being single again not least among them.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

No problem Hamson. I didn't think that you were being malicious or anything; I just didn't want the map to go in the direction of funny entries. When I first saw your marker, I thought that imogen had placed one there for her husband (who is somewhere down there as we speak), and was disappointed to find out that it was a joke.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I know that Annie and Hobbes both posted on Hatrack where they'd be serving their missions. Did Zevlag? I expect that he did, but if not someone should probably write to him and get his permission before placing him on this map, I'd think.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

He deffinatly did, I had him last year in the holiday exchange, and I know I read a bunch of his posts (he was already at the mtc), he'd said where it was, offered everyone the opportunity for his address (which he sent me in a thank you note, but I've lost), and talked about it quite a bit, possibly more than Hobbes.
