Extra Time in the Name of Larry Bird

A 27 - year - old man demanded extra prison time because he wanted to honor his basketball hero, Larry Bird.
A lawyer for Eric James Torpy reached a plea agreement with Oklahoma City prosecutors for a 30-year jail term on two charges of shooting with intent to kill and one count of a weapons violation, Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott said.
Torpy then insisted on getting 33 years to match the uniform number Bird wore when he led the Boston Celtics to three National Basketball Association championships during the 1980s, Elliott said.
"He said if he was going to go down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird's jersey,'' said Judge Elliot. The judge accommodated his request.
"We accommodated his request and he was just as happy as he could be."
"I've never seen anything like this in 26 years in the courthouse. But I know the DA is happy about it.''

What can you say to something like this? The guy wants 3 extra years to "honor" a sports star. If I were Larry Bird, I'd be very afraid.

Bird doesn't have anything to worry about until 2038, when the guy gets out.

True, but I'd be freaked to find out that there was even one fan out there who is violent and willing to throw away 3 years of life in my name.

With time off for good behavior, it's really more like a couple of months. [Wink]

Why would he take the time off and dishonor the ideal of the great Larry Bird?

I'd do that for Brett Favre, you know.

Four consecutive life sentences?

Nope. A 30 year sentence changed to four years.

You honor Brett Favre. I'll honor the Mooninites.

Since the moon rulz #1, I shall only serve one day.

On the moon, we have advanced beyond all rules and manners.

In all seriousness though, this man sounds supremely creepy. I wonder if he'll change his mind after he's been in prison for a while.

Talk about obsessed...

(This is the second time I've posted that some exact sentence fragment in the past ten minutes.)

He'll probably just serve 33 months...
