I just got reminded of why I no longer post very often on another message board.

I got a reply to my post within seconds of making it. And the gist of the reply was:

"I have no interest in the subject of your post. I am replying so you'll know that I have no interest."

For some reason that gets to me.

More than anything else.

I know it's irrational to get upset over something so trivial...yet for some reason this gets under my skin.

*I predict at least one joke reply to this post, should I get any.*

Some people are just rude. I'm probably one of them. But I don't do it intentionally. If I'd been you I would have cyber-slapped the person.

By the way, I'm replying to your post because I am interested in the subject of your post.

People on the internet are inherently rude because a part of their mind doesn't comprehend there really is someone on the other end who could be hurt by what they type.

In a way, they are saying that they don't like the subject, but they are interested enough in you to post a comment anyway.

Are you sure you don't have a secret admirer? [Wink]

I have no interest in this post [Wink] Just Kidding! It does seem pointless, unless they're just trying to get their post count up.

Hmmm....

There are these news polls where you call some 900- number to vote. Like the question is "Should jaywalkers be subject to the death penalty" Call 900-555-0001 for yes, 900-555-0002 for no, or 900-555-0003 for don't know/no opinion.

Who spends money on a toll call to say they have no opinion on the matter?

Too many people.

Probably the same people who mortgage their houses to buy lotery tickets when the pot is really high. [Big Grin]

I had to mortgage my house to pay off my 900 no opinion bills....

this might be your joke reply: I am tryig to figure out what the subject is.... Seriously trying, although I have had a lil too much to celebrate new years eve, eve. BTW the person that wrote that has attained a before unheard of level of passive agessiveness. I am in shock. and Awe.

Cheer up, only idiots like to make people look like idiots

I think it's the net equivalent of nodding to the person you're waiting for the elevator with. Sort of an, "I see you, but do not wish to talk to you" thing.

It's an acknowledgement that someone read the thread, but wasn't interested in the topic. I'm with you, Puffy, in that I'd rather them not say, "not interested" but I know a lot of people feel insulted if people don't reply to their thread. When most people aren't going to reply just to say that they read it. If it's interesting to them, they say something, if not, they don't.

/ sorry for the necrophilia, but at least the body's still warm.

If no one is replying to the topic, I don't mind a little "I'm not interested in your thread."

But if it's getting replies, it just strikes me as narcisism and attention grabbing.

"Too lazy to look up how to spell Narcisism" Pix

I think that's it. They don't have anything to say, but don't want to be left out. Or think that they are important enought that they would be missed (and maybe they are?).

I think it's similar to movie reviewers who dislike most of the movies they are forced by their job to watch. They feel a sense of responsibility to their huge readership to let them know that this product does not bear their stamp of approval. [Smile]

And some might recognize their power to hurt but just don't care. Which is sad. I see too many people online who value intelligence and ability to argue/articulate above anything else, and just feel compelled to shoot down anyone who doesn't measure up to their standards. It can get really vicious, and I just think, "OK, so you're smart, but you sure are a small, small person." One thing I appreciate about this forum is the number of individuals who go out of their way to treat other posters as human beings and who try to look beyond immaturity, unintentional offenses, badly worded arguments -- and typos.
