I've got a friend looking for a "What part of Dong Ma don't you understand?" Serenity t-shirt. Any ideas where one can be found? She'd love to buy it...

Thanks, guys!

I've got a button for sale that says that, I could make it a t-shirt design if she's interested.

Chris, I think she loves you and I think she's saying yes. I can't tell for sure over the screaming. [Big Grin]

Edit to add: Chris, I gave her your email addy fro your profile and told her to put quidscribis from Hatrack in the subject line. I think she'll be emailing you directly. Thanks. [Kiss] You're a real gem.

What does Dong Ma mean in English?

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

No idea.

I was just passing a request along.

I also haven't seen serenity. At least I'm far enough away that no one will stone me for it. [Big Grin]

same question - inquiring minds want to know

That's a nuke-tossing offense.

Oh, love the phrase! I forget--was that used on the show? Sounds like something Jayne would say.

("Dong ma" means "Understand?")

Never used omn the show, don't remember seeing it before my button but I could easily be mistaken.

I started working on a site today to categorize and list all the places to find Firefly / Serenity / Browncoat merchandise.

Strange, Google thinks it is people: Dong Ma, Dong Ma, Dong Ma.

Found this: http://fireflychinese.home.att.net/index.html and this (they swear on this page) http://www.groonk.net/blog/mt-archives/004595.php

Responded!

Chris, do you know what Dong Ma means? Can you help us out here?

Posted by Vasslia Cora (Member # 7981) on :

It means understand, all sites for firefly translations I've seen say so.

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Ok, thanks. And one more thing I'm wondering about now. If that line wasn't from the show and Chris made it up (unless I'm misunderstanding what he said) how did quid's friend know about it? Did she see Chris' site? Or wait...is it from Serenity the movie and Chris just said it's not from the show? [Confused] *isn't thinking clearly*

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Nope, my friend is a Serenity nut and I sent her to Chris's site and gave her Chris's email because of his response above. [Big Grin] I don't know whether it's the movie or the show - like I said, haven't seen either. [Smile]

I am pretty sure its in the show. If not then he got it from the movie.

EDIT: Yep I just checked dong-ma (understand) is in Firefly.

I am almost certain that Mal says something to Kaylee along the lines of, "I can't be having this from you now. Dong ma?" in Out of Gas.

"Dong ma?" literally means "Understand?" As used in the movie and TV show, it's very terse- the colloquial equivalent of "Got it?!"

I conjure I'd love a tshirt that said that.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Huh. Have I started a trend? Have I created a market?

Chris, I'm thinking you're going to have to post your link here so you can sell them there tshirt to yon Jatraqueros.

I know I'm getting the button, at least.

Posted by Shmuel (Member # 7586) on :

To clarify: "dong ma?" is used several times on the show. The full sentence originated with Chris, as far as I know.

(And I have the button. It's shiny.)

So then the mystery remains on where quid's friend got the phrase. We may never know.

Posted by Shmuel (Member # 7586) on :

Possibly she saw somebody wearing one of the buttons?

In Sri Lanka?

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I didn't get the impression that quid's friend is in Sri Lanka.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

quid DID say that she couldn't tell over the screaming. So, they were either right next to each other talking or having a conversation on the fun.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Nope, friend is not in Sri Lanka but in the eastern US. And the screaming was a metaphor. Or something.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

toldya

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

lol, okay. [Smile] I was fooled by the metaphor. Still I think it would be cool if Serenity/hatrack things were showing up on the streets of Sri Lanka, don't you? The world is small indeed.

Hey, Chris, have you designed the tshirt yet and put it up at Cafepress? I'm willing to bet there'd be other takers...

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Not yet. I wrote back and offered, asking if the design was OK, but haven't gotten an answer yet.

I'm in the middle of making a new directory site of all the Serenity merchandise I can find, including my own stuff.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Okay, just wondering.

I don't know if she told you, but she's also in the middle of packing for a move in another week or week and a half, and she has unreliable dial-up where they are, so it's not surprising if she didn't get back to you yet. But she will - she wants that tshirt. [Smile]
