Plan to make sheet cake and pipe Thor's hammer on it (need pattern)
Thought" Sew pieces of felt together in sprectral order, use as Welcome mat (Bifrost).
Have any other thoughts?

Face painting or masks to look like Asgard? Or if there are girls coming who don't want to, have a few things they can put on to look like the Cimmerian women, you know, the ones on the planet they met Thor on?
Have a "Blast the Replicators" game-- spray paint some small boxes silver, stack them, and let the kids shoot nerf weapons at them. (Assuming you don't go in for complete non-violence at little boys' birthday parties.)
I'll browse Gateworld some more and try to come up with more ideas.

Oh! Thor ate cubes of funky food in... I think it was "New Order, Part 1." You could have Jell-o cubes, block ice cream cut into cubes to go with the cake, and other "cube" food, like square meatballs or grilled marinated tofu cubes, melon cubes (perfect because of bright green and orange flesh), etc., preferably all as funky colored as you can make them.

Oh! And the Asgard have cloned bodies. I'd have to think on it more, but I'm sure you could play some kind of memory game based on that, or a "spot the difference" game.

Play a game of string tag-- One player starts out as "it," and every person he tags has to hold his hand as they run around trying to tag other kids. This is to symbolize the battle between Thor and Jormungand at Ragnorak. Eventually, even Thor is killed. . .
Have some "mead." Really, just cream soda.
You MUST have everyone stand up on chairs and tables and shout "YAWP!" at the top of their lungs. Just 'cuz.
Pin the hammer on Thor's hand. . . or the noose around Odin's neck. . .

Loki could be the rationale for a "quiet game"-- play the one where they all sit in a circle and you bring in a tray of objects. They have one minute to look at it, then you take it away and pass around a piece of paper. In the meantime, "Loki" switches several of the objects with others. The tray is brought back in and the object is to spot all the objects that have been switched and write them down. Quiet games are good for after the rowdy games and food, for settling down a little before everyone goes home.

You could have them make their own viking helmets. This will take a little prep -- and I've done this, so I know it works and that it's fun.
You'll need to make the shells of the hats ahead of time.
Materials: Paper grocery bags. (If you tell the store what they're for they may very well just give them to you. Do you have a Haggen close? I know they're really nice about giving out a handful of bags) Paper mache glue Balloons Styrofoam cones, two for each hat -- various sizes make it more likely each hat will be unique. Just make sure you have at least two of each size. Duct tape Fake fur Black sharpie markers Glue gun
Gosh, I wish I still had mine so I could take a picture and email it to you.
Anyway, you blow up enough balloons, one for each child you're expecting to come, to the size slightly larger than a 9 year old's head. Shred the paper bags into small peices and paper mache them over the balloons to the approximate size of a hat. You're going to trim them once they are dry, so go just a bit larger than what you plan to use. Once the hats are dry, pop the balloon and trim to size.
Make one up ahead of time so the kids know what they should look like when they're done. Cut strips of duct tape to give the hat a "metal" rim. You can also go across the top and stud it with black dots with your sharpie. Use the glue gun to attach the styrofoam cones. These are your horns. I put mine out to either side, but one of the other people in our group only used two different sizes and put them on the front of her hat, like a rhinoserous. It was very funny. Anyway, you can use the fake fur to further embellish your viking hat.
I'm a big fan of making hats at birthday parties. Even the most non-crafty boys will usually get into it if the end results are cool.
I'll see if I can find a picture of my viking hat. A whole group of my friends made them and they all turned out different. The final touch for all our hats was to put our names on the back in big huge letters, like the mickey mouse hats at Disneyland. We wore them to a party all together and it was a big hit. You could get foam letter stickers (at Walmart they're very inexpensive and stick great -- no glue) and let the kids use those instead of a sharpie. For that matter, you could get various stickers for the kids to use to decorate their hats.

That viking hat is a really good idea, although I'd try to come up with something safter than a hot glue gun for attaching the horns.
Here's my suggestion (well, the first of them, anyway):
Get a length of dryer hose or something like it that is long enough to circle your house. Paint it like a snake, and make a head and tail for it. Position it so that the head is square in the middle of the area just outside your front door, and put the tail in the snake's mouth.

OK, I'll think over these ideas, see what I can afford/do, and take lots of pictures. Runes- that's a must do Mrs. M! jeniwren, those hats sound awesome- I just don't know if my skills are up to it.

My bit of obscure Norse mythology: a pair of ravens, Hugin and Munin, that bring news and information to Odin. Hugin is thought, and Munin is memory. You could modify some sort of puzzle/memory game and bring ravens into it somehow (for example, having the kids tell a story one word at a time by passing a stuffed raven called Munin, having to remember what everyone else said before them).
