Movies I expected to be terrible, but actually turned out to be good-
40 Year Old Virgin-That was a surprisingly good movie! Sure it was vulgar and crude in bits, but it was also rather sweet too. Even OSC would approve of the end because-

spoiler-They waited to get married before having sex.

Can't think of another one right now.

Movies I hoped would be good, or movies that I hate that everyone loves-
Million Dollar Baby-Depressing movie. Such a let down. Boring, filled with cliches and just dippy. How it could win over a wonderful movie like Finding Neverland is beyond me.
Harry Potter 4-Everyone likes it but me. I can't believe how dippy they made it and how they cut out a key scene and the one thing that drove me nuts the most besides the too cheerful ending was-

spoiler-
if Barty Crouch Jr. escaped from prison earlier in the movie, why not mention it right at the beginning?
Star Wars III- Way too many dippiness factors for me to enjoy.
Movies I knew would suck from the moment I saw the preview-
Bewitched. Why did they make this movie? It's terrible on every level a movie can be terrible on!
Dr. T and the Women
What Women Want

Movies I thought were good when I first saw them but now hate-
As Good as it Gets
Forest Gump
There are tons more that I can't think of right now.

I agree about 40 Year Old Virgin. I expected something terrible along the lines of American Pie, and I was incredibly suprised to find a thoughtful, sweet, and funny film. [Smile] That might even have been the best movie I saw last year.

I thought Bewitched was kinda cute. It was silly and sappy, but I left the theater smiling. I don't think I'd watch it again, but it was enjoyable for one watch.

Movies that everyone seems to have loved, but I couldn't stand are the Lord of the Rings movies and The Star Wars movies.

Everyone, please feel free to throw rotten tomatoes at your computer screens.

I saw Unleashed recently (starring Jet Li) A lot better than I thought it would be. It had charcter developement. How strange. I wouldn't call it amazing, but compared to what I thought it would be, it was pretty good. I actually cared about his character for once.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Tante, that would hurt the computer screen. *grin*

I still refuse to see Titanic.

And I still think Shakespeare would have approved of Romeo and Juliet with Danes and DiCaprio.

Tante, I hate Star Wars too. I mean, good lord . . .

The Luhrman Romeo and Juliet was actually well done, if a bit heavy-handed (masquerade costumes? wow). And it has Paul Rudd, which is always a redeeming factor, even if he does play that whining pansy Paris.

Unleashed was great. Kung fu action and a lot of heart.
Plus Jet Li is so *hearts*
I do not like the new Star Wars movies. I tried, but they are lacking something that the Lord of the Rings movies had an abundance of. I could watch L of the R extended a million times, but I could hardly sit through the first 3 Star Wars movies again (the new ones)
Romeo and Juliet was quite good.
I both liked and disliked Phantom of the Opera at the same time. It had great scenes like the beginning where raising the chandelier cleared all the dust from the theatre, but the singing was not as good as it should have been. It really wasn't.

Shan, I'm with you. I also refuse Titanic.

Movie I missed and really want to see:
Kung Fu Hustle

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

I'd like to go see The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe again.

I thought that was rather well done.

Here's one that people groan at, but I think is delightful in an inane sort of way:

Red Sonja

*listens for the groans*

Posted by oolung (Member # 8995) on :

I've seen it, I've seen it!!! (Red Sonja, I mean) [The Wave] If I still can't forget it (after a few years) than it must've been _amazing_ [Big Grin]

Kung fu hustle... weeeelll, I'd rather recommend Shaolin Soccer, much more funny to my mind. Kung fu Hustle had it's funny moments, but... I don't know, maybe I just wasn't in the mood.

Oh, as for Hongkong movies, anyone's seen Jimmy Ho? The bloodiest movie I've ever seen, but still I [ROFL]

Posted by oolung (Member # 8995) on :

Tante Shvester: I can't see my screen through the layer of tomatoes, but it's just because of the LOTR. yeah yeah I know you don't care [Smile] But
I agree completely as for the Star Wars. The last one was actually one of the worst movies ever for me. The only person who was believable there was Yoda, and he was DIGITAL!!! [Wall Bash]

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

I haven't even seen the last Star Wars movie, and have no desire to.

Posted by oolung (Member # 8995) on :

Good for you. Don't do it to yourself. the rest of us is already lost. [Smile]

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

I was hoping that a movie about DARTH VADER turning into this evil yellow eyed thing would be COOL!
Instead I got dippiness factors and irratating inconsitencies and things that were just... lame!
Kung Fu hustle was cool and funny. Cracked me up. Plus it was a bit sweet too.

Then there are the movies that are good but I never want to see againg-

Cold Mountain
House of Sand and Fog
Requiem for a Dream
Last Exit to Brooklyn
Various Chinese Movies with miserable ending.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

*is stunned and amazed that there DOES exist another person who has seen Red Sonja*

[Big Grin]

General guideline:

Any movie that "comes in" on characters laughing at something someone said "moments before"-- that can't be bothered to write actual dialogue in order to build camraderie between characters- is a BAD movie.

Examples: Fantastic Four, The Muse. (That the latter got some good reviews is beyond me. I think some reviewers get so jaded that they think movie in-jokes in and of themselves are funny.)

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Lord of the Rings seemed to me like an interminable schlep. The whole gang is either walking walking walking, or running running running away. Intermittently there is some gratuitous dismemberment.

It was even worse than Lord of the Dance.

Posted by oolung (Member # 8995) on :

Chinese Movies with miserable ending (that probably means most of them): I'm sure you've seen The House of The Flying Daggers. it had not only a miserable ending, but was also miserable in itself, imho. Soooo boring... I'm really tired of watching Zhang Ziyi, the Actress Of One Facial Expression. And now she's going to play a Japanese!!! Grrrrrrr <snarling snarling snarling> Why why WHY woul'd anyone do such a thing?
Synesthesia, I agree completely about the Star Wars. The plot was so naive. If only Anakin was played well, it'd be so much better. But I think a wooden plank is more expressive and believable than he was...

"My wife is pregnant and I had a bad dream. So, I guess I'll kill all my friends, and a bunch of kids, too, 'cause, what the heck, as long as I'm at it. That ought to help."

Movies I hate that everyone else loves:

Unwatchable movies:

I have more, but Aerin woke up almost every hour on the hour last night, so my brain isn't working very well.

Posted by james01 (Member # 8863) on :

I wasn't the biggest fan of Narnia either Mrs. M.

And Alexander is definately up there in the unwatchable category. We netflixed it and couldn't watch more than 20 minutes. That and Troy. And whatever other movies fall into that genre.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

Aw
Narnia was good.
Troy I like, it had nekkid Brad Pit in it... Can't complain about nekkid Brad Pit

Movies that Have Nudity in it That Should Have been Good because of Nudity but were not:
Pillow Book. Ewan McGregor was nekkid all through most of that movie. It started off good, unique. But then suddenly it started to GO DOWN HILL! It just got terrible. I don't know why it is that they had to make that movie so freaky!
Show Girls-Just terrible. Even if I was a guy I'd be twitching from the bad plot and acting.
Crash. Not the good Crash from last year, but this terrible movie about car crashes. Who the heck wants to see these sort of movies? I hate post modernism. Hate it so much. I don't even know what it is, I just know it makes for a terrible movie! Filled with things like dripping clocks and ooo wa ooo wa oooo music with close ups of frightening abstract paintings and sex for no reason other than the fact that they think that that sort of thing is edgy when really it is just plain boring!!!!

Don't see the 4th because It drove me nuts... I read that book a million times. I cannot believe how much they cut that was really important!

American Beauty was good, but it drove me nuts the how pathetic most of the characters were.

Speaking of which, I hate the movie Happiness so much... Filled with pathetic people and their pathetic lives.
Also, Paladrones by the same guy was just confusing and made no sense. I so hate the way these directors try to be edgy but really they just depress me with their "life is meaningless" attitude.

Oh you can definately complain about nekkid Brad Pitt. [Razz]

Ummmm...if you've read the book then you know

spoiler

that nobody knew Barty was missing from jail because they thought he died years ago. He and his mother switched places.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

I know! This didn't even come up in the movie! They completely changed that part. *points to where I said I read it a thousand times*

Another movie that bugs me-Pulp Fiction

Posted by Black Mage (Member # 5800) on :

SPOILER FOR HP4

But then at the end of the movie, Dumbledore tells them to check Azkaban's cells, implying that in this timeline, he only escaped at the beginning. On top of that, Crouch Sr. is genuinely surprised to find Jr. on the loose, because in this timeline he did not aid in the escape. In this timeline, Voldemort has not taken up residence in his house.

Can someone explain to me what 'dippy' means?

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

Dippy the way I use it is when you watch a movie and it's filled with bits and pieces that just make sense. Or it could be in a book too. Yet it is written in a way or presented in a way that says it makes sense just because that's the way it's written while you watch this movie or read this book and rail about how UNREALISTIC it all is, hence, dippiness factors and how they can lower the quality of things.

Star Wars Episode 2 was so boring I fell asleep halfway through ... Never did see episode 3.

I really enjoyed HP4, in the theater. Didn't notice the missing things too much until I thought about it afterward, when I did miss them ... but I still thought it was a really fun movie when I saw it again (I had a good excuse for going twice!). Don't know what it would've been like if I'd never read the books, though - they did leave out a LOT.

In this timeline, Voldemort has not taken up residence in his house.
Did Voldemort live in Crouch's house in the book? I thought in the book and the movie, Voldemort was in the Riddle's old house which the gardener was still taking care of (the old guy who had the key and came in to chase the "kids" out).

But you're right about this part:
quote:
at the end of the movie, Dumbledore tells them to check Azkaban's cells, implying that in this timeline, he only escaped at the beginning.
As if NO ONE would have noticed a prisoner missing for a whole school year! [Roll Eyes]

Yes, but then book Voldemort and Wormtail moved over to the Crouches' where they could free Jr. and put Sr. under the Imperious Curse.

quote:
I cannot believe how much they cut that was really important!
However, they also cut the house-elves. For this act of kindness, I will forgive all else.

My biggest beef with Phantom of the Opera (besides the quality of singing, which has already been mentioned) is that they moved the Chandelier from the end of Act 1 to the end of the movie. Which I can understand, as the movie does not have an intermission . . . but that means that the Phantom says, "You will curse the day you did not do all that the Phantom asks of you!" swirls his cape dramatically, looks up into the falling snow dramatically, and then proceeds to do . . . nothing. It also means that they had to cut the cool line, "There are worse things than a shattered chandelier." And there are not so many cool lines in this play as to not notice one when it is gone.

Movie that I can't stand which everyone else seems to love? Sleepless in Seatle

I hate the house elves so much.
But still.

Posted by oolung (Member # 8995) on :

I think the HP4 was actually the best of all 4 movies. At least this time they didn't waste half of the movie for a quidditch match... and Harry somewhat improved his acting skills [Smile]

Oh, there's something I've discovered only yesterday! Everyone who has the Return of the King (the extended version): have you ever chosen the option select scene and went for teh last one in disc one (the siege of gondor)? If not, do so now! There should be a surprise hidden there: The Easter Egg. It's a faked interview with Elijah Wood (blissfully unaware) by Dominic Monaghan, pretending to be a German interviewer. Hilarious!!! Fantastic!!!!

I abhor American Beauty as well, Mrs. M, so you're definitely not alone there.

But I'll say it: I liked all episodes of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Narnia. And I own all of them that have been released - and watch them!

I have many problems with Troy, but I still like watching it. I only watch it up to the point where the Greeks come out of the Trojan Horse, though. I can't possibly believe the rest of the movie.

Troy dragged on. And on. And on. And on.

Am I the only one who really missed Dobby and Winky?

Posted by oolung (Member # 8995) on :

Apparently [Smile] i didn't even think of them once. I don't like Dobby since I saw the posters for a previous movie with him on it and that extremely catchy phrase: 'Dobby came to warn you'.
...yeah, that really made me want to see the movie [Big Grin]

And much as I like nekkid Brad Pitt, i think he looks much better without blond tresses and skirt. [Smile]
One thing I liked in Troy, though: they used a new martial art there, so the fight scenes were kind of interesting to watch (not kung fu, at last!)

I just missed how Dobby and especially Winky would have made the movie plot make more SENSE.
Without it it just feels weird and wrong and illogical.

I expected Shallow Hal to be absolutely horrendous and insulting. I happened to hit it while flipping channels, and was so amazed to see that it was different than I'd expected that I sat through the whole thing when they ran it again.

Love That Boy seems like a horrible premise for a movie. And the main character is intensely unlikeable at the beginning. But I was really happy that I'd watched it by the time it ended. I guess I have a thing for the redemption of jerks.

I've just seen Narnia. There are some minor flaws but on the whole I quite liked it. Only... shooting with a phoenix? Is that going to be in the Olympics?

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

40-Year Old Virgin was so good, I was hoping Wedding Crashers would be too.
The two main characters were so unlikable, and it was yet another one of those the man lies to the woman, falls for her, tries to come clean, ect. she gets mad, somehow they end up back together again. They do that plot way too much! I hate it.
Plus I want to kick and hit guys like that. Just thap them upside the head. "sa-WACK"
