So I put in a DVD video to watch, and after a few seconds of whirring, the iMac just spits it back out. I've run the diagnostic tools that came with my Applecare package, but it didn't find anything wrong. Anyone know how to test the DVD drive? I know it can still read and burn CDs just fine (as I just tested this). I haven't attempted burning any DVDs and I've tried playing multiple DVDs with no success. Any recommendations here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This happened to my CD-RW/DVD drive on my 3 year old laptop about a year and a half ago. It still handles cds fine, but DVDs it just spits em back out. I have no idea why, I've reinstalled the system several times since it started doing it and still it does it. Maybe I should try flashing the firmware...

As a side note, I'm still covered by Applecare, so I guess worse comes to worse I could always have it sent off for them to fix or replace it.

Have you looked at the Apple Discussions, on Apple's website? There are many knowledgeable Mac users there who can help you troubleshoot the problem. And if you are covered by Applecare, you can call tech support for free.

I'd call. I've never heard of fixes for DVD drives. If they don't work, they don't work. You might run System Profiler to make sure it is a DVD drive. I mean, even though you know it is, it might help to know that your computer knows too. And then I'd Google the make of the DVD drive just to see if others have the problem. If you use the model as it appears in System Profiler, that is a pretty good way to find Mac-only postings.

Well I talked to Apple tech people online. They offered multiple suggestions, all of which I did. The last (archiving and reinstalling the OS) didn't work and messed up my internet connection as well. Basically the tech people at the end said just to take it into the Apple store nearby since it's still covered under warranty.
It's very odd. The player reads and writes CDs, writes DVDs, and reads burned DVDS, but it can't read what they call "commercial DVDs" (meaning basically movies and TV shows on DVD). It's an odd thing.
