First come, first appointed? This is not very democratic! Don't you need an election?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Can I be a memeber and just religate some of the minor cases to my second in command Sarcare?

And I'm willing to risk the side effects.

And if you think I'm bad, at least I'm no judge Alito. [Evil]

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

We need four more Judges. I call head guy.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Oh, and when do we start establishing the laws of this court?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

When we have enough members. Hopefully that will be soon. For now let's a law. Any suggestions?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

1. Protection of Established Members of the Hatrack Community

2. ?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Oh, I have a law. Any law that is passed, must be by 4 members, and will then be put to the Public, and 25 votes cast. 13 must approve.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

1. Protection towards the established members of the Hatrack Community

2. ?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Agreed, that law is automaticly Passed.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Agreed as to my law?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

For now, only us two must agree.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

So majority rules in the Hatrack Supreme Court, and do we always have to listen to the community or can we decide between those on the board?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Aye. :raises hand:

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

We can decide between those on board, it is a mix, depending on the law. Majority, yes.

Apparently can't do that...

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Maybe a law to punish those wo misuse their expereince over newbies or a restriction of... something.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I know I already tried to create another user account under the name God_ . It didn't work.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

I say, being banned for 10 minutes. Not to evil, but fair.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Dr Strangelove of Congress doesnt quite have as nice of a ring to it as Reticulum of Congress does.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Can't do it anyways. Dang.

Anyways, we automaticly have the right to declare war, and are also judges over Discussions about Orson Scott Card. Agreed?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Well I was going to use it to condem those on another thread were someone wanted to change an OSC book. I had threatened that God would tell him to shut up, sadly it didn't work.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Of whom we ca delcare war on.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Agreed. And I want to start a war against King of Men. Shawshanks off my hit list.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Agreed on the expanding our powers thing. That's always a positive sign.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

I dunno, I think King of Men provides some amusement and some interesting lines of thought.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

War on King of Men? All must agree. I agree for no reason whatsoever. If passed, then create a new thread Advent.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

How bout Tante? Not only is she a goddess, which may serve to undermine our judging ability, but she posts way to dang much.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Then War is henceforth not passed. Any other actions?

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

If we must, I'll agree on King of Men. But I want it noted that it is against my gut instinct.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

I disagree.

I declare war on Orson Scott Card!

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I push this forward on the basis of his superiority complex over newbies and his disrespect towards other established Hatrack members.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

I thought about that. Am I the deciding vote?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Then War is declared on King of Men. May his forces gather, and create a post advent.

*Bang's Gaval*

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Yes.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I disagree on going to war with the godess. After all I don't want to scare away the few female Hatrack members we have.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Well, lets postpone the OSC war until we resolve the KoM war. I declare the notion for war on OSC henceforth postponed until further notice.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

The Congress of the HatRack Forums has formally declared war on King of Men, denied war on Tante. I declined war on her.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Strange, would you like to create the war post? If he loses he will be banned for 10 minutes.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Ok, the good Doctor Judge is going to bed, as I have a chemistry lab tomorrow. I agree with all motions except for the ones I disagree with.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

On the topic of war against OSC I agree that it should be postponed.

p.s. I have established the war thread.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Agreed.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Ah, I would, but alas ...

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Any other matters up for discussion?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Motion to dismiss war against OSC.
For he is awesome.

Motion to give the HatRack Congress power as both power as supreme court and Congress.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I agree on both terms.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Requires 2/3 vote.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Oy this is addicting. I agree on both terms also, but seriously, I'm going to bed now. Even Supreme Judges must sleep. Until I return, carry on the good work, and if necessary appoint a proxy.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Then the War on OSC is hencforth Null and void, and the power of congress is doubled.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

We may have a problem guys, Papa Janitor is threatening my War thread already. What do you want me to do?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Are you sure you want me to declare it void?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Why so?

Motion to strip the power to declare war by Congress

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Yes, we wish not to cause hostilities with Administraters.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Motion to eject this Horseman out of the court.

Can we still have a lower order court to deside on other actions governed by one of our subsidiaries?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Agreed, that will be under your jurisdiction. But here, we could use a case.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Yes, we are the peoples court, not their rulers. Its just to late at night for other members to respond to our votes.

And maybe we should remove our power to declare war (considering what happened last time).

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Yes, as I mentioned in a previous post, we no longer hold power to declare war, and no big laws may be passed untill tommarrow.

Graft
quote:
graft - the term for corruption in politics that involves crooked money making schemes. Often the term is associated with big city politics, where opportunities for graft are endless for a well-entrenched political group or "machine."
A typical scheme might involve rigged bids for road or construction work. In exchange for a hidden payment or kickback, the politicians throw the work - often at an inflated price - to a company run by friends. In some cases, the line between graft and a legitimate political "donation" can be hard to draw.

Ummmm, just out of curiosity, where does your authority come from? See, I'm planning a bloody coup of your "Congress" as soon as it's properly established, and I need to know where to lead my militia when the time comes. Then I can return the power to the people (also known as anarchy).

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

smitty, who would even join your army?

And why would you want to attack us if we are serving the Harack Community by giving them their own courts?

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

I don't need people to join. Plenty of militias to go around out in this part of the world. And they all like fighting "the man".

See, you guys are trying to TAKE power. Even a polite dictator is still a dictator. But my point remains, where does your power lie? What are you going to do, scold people?

Wait a minute.... you're secretly the UN, trying to impose your will on Hatrack, aren't you? [No No]

Edit: I think you are misunderstanding things - I don't WANT power. Power corrupts.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

If you would bother to read our laws then you would understand that we have only what power the Hatrack Community gives us.

If you have any further questions or arguements then pelase submit them at 17:00 when the entire court will resume discussions on such matters.

13. The HatRack Congress can preside over any Forums ecluding the Writers work shop, and those the Admins advise not to.

I will wait for the Congress memebers to apporve these. or not.

His threat is not serious, and should thus be taken as so. He will not be tried, as he holds no power.

Yes/No?

Saying that your power comes from the people seems a little off when you declared yourself a congress critter. And you're already trying to abuse your power by bribing your enemies. Plus I like taking the local militias on raids. Sometimes we come back with nice snacks that we can't get locally.

You guys are forgetting the only law that matters here is that of OSC and his proxy, Papa Janitor.

I would also like to make a motion to instate Vassilia as another board member at this time.

We are far below they.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

We simply follow what we believe they would do. Any cases that need to be tried?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

I second. We would only need 2 more Judges.

Members of the Congress and Supreme Court of HatRack Forums:

Reticulum
Advent 115
Dr. Strangelove
Tante Shvester

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

None at this time, but I would like to motion for the court to disregard the Anarchists statments until such time as they are deemed helpful to the Board or the Hatrack Community at large.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

I second that motion.

I have a new proposed law that would have a very large impact.

1. Protection of Established Members of the Hatrack Community must be maintained at all times

2. This court shall have no right to declare war on any member of the Hatrack Community

3. This court shall make no law that restricts a Hatrackers right to free speech

4. Ample evidence must be brought before this court for us to rule a guilty verdict

5. At least two witnesses are needed for a case in order for it to be brought before this Court

6. An accused may have a representative if they feel that they are not up to defending themselves

7. A defendant may request the 5th so as to stay silent and legally keep from incriminating his or herself

8. This court reserves the right to through out any case that the Bench feels is unlawful and or prejudice towards a group or member

9. Should any member of the Hatrack Congress perform an unlawful, or unjust act, they will be tried by the other Bench Members.

10. Any case may be tried in the HatRack Supreme Court, so long as it has a firm base, and just reason.

11. Any court or political power such as a leader (Exluding OSC, admins, and people who have it legitimately ) or who claim to have power will be null and void untill approved by the HatRack Congress.

12. The HatRack Congress does not apply to Law number 11.

13. The HatRack Congress can preside over any Forums ecluding the Writers work shop, and those the Admins advise not to.

14. When all members of HatRack Congress are not Present, a law is able to be passed, but must still require majority, and two Judges at least. If there are only two, both must agree.

15. Any law passed during such time as the law in 14 may be challenged, by other members of Congress.

And smitty I was not trying to bribe you I was trying to add your element to the board as a midway between our court and the people we serve.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Yes, untill such time as the board is full, any member may apply for a spot. Besides, do you believe we are really corrupt?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I second this motion, but I would also like to include the Hatrack Communities feelings on any of these laws, so as to better serve them.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I believe that we should attempt to appoint someone as a majority speeker for the community so as to voice the publics opinions on both our new laws and our rulings in the courtroom.

Edit: Perhaps this speeker should be choosen by the community.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

That is a very good plan, Advent. This new law is good, and I believe it should begin immediately.

I think you should start that thread now, and we will let the people nominate and vote for the person. The Person with the most votes after 100 posts wins, regardless of ho many votes were cast. If it takes longer then two days to reach 100, whowever has the most votes after that time wins, regardless of how many.

I think you should start the thread this time. After all I'm already on notice for the whole War Declared fiasco.

What would happen if a fellow board member suddenly had a tragic accident?

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

But since you judges aren't actually elected, what makes you think anyone will obey your laws? And again, what type of penalties do you plan to impose? Even the wise and mighty PJ (may he live forever!) can only edit and delete threads. Or at least he has enough self-control to keep his punishment within these boundaries.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Excellent idea. If the idea is shot down by Papa Janitor, it will be destroyed immediately.

I will first create a thread asking him, and if he gives the go ahead I will.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Then we would have to elect someone to be their proxy until such time as they recover or replace them with another.

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

What think Advent?

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Agreed, that way we are not challenging the higher powers. And perhaps we should rename this thread: Hatrack Supreme Court. i have already done something similar to my own court.

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

PJ can offer swift and (somewhat) severe punishment. You're offering, what, a scolding if the committee decides as such?

Posted by camus (Member # 8052) on :

I think these laws are pretty good.

Laws

and I think PJ is doing a good job enforcing them.

Is this a serious thread?

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

Yes, smitty. We aim to help not Punish. Advent, I will create the post immediately, and as for the title, it will be The Hatrack Congress and Supreme Court.

Agreed?

I was replying to smitty, not camus.

Please create the new thread so that the earlier matter may be settled in a timely matter.

And perhap we should begin to think of replacements for ourselves should any of us take ill. And maybe not replacements but temporary Proxy judges.

Ahhh, positive reinforcement only. That should work well. I withdraw my threat of a bloody coup.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Perhaps we should leave the Congress title to the admins, seeing as how they are the higher power, and the fact that it would be unlawful of us to control both the courts and the congress.

Then I would return home to Indiana with my new snacks.

If I am to perrish, I nominate the Court to choe who replaces me. Here is a new law.

1. Protection of Established Members of the Hatrack Community must be maintained at all times

So, unless there is going to be considerable graft coming my way, I will not be a part of your project.

Have fun without me, guys!

The Speaker (Sorry about the misspelling) is going to be an elected official who will bring before the Court all matters that the community views as important and will inform us of any dissagrements the community has. The election is taking place in a seperate thread as we speak. And the Speaker is majority elected by the community, not by the court (although we do reserve the right to vote as individuals).

Wow.

When this thread began last night, I assumed it was intended to be humorous, even if at least one issue was ill-advised. I'm no longer confident that at least a few people here aren't serious, and so I was hesitant even to post lest I give this idea any semblance of credibility or legitimacy.

Shoot -- I can't come up with a wording of my thoughts that isn't frankly insulting. Let's just say this: until the Cards determine that any (additional) individual or group needs to be officially recognized to ensure the continued well-being of this forum, we'll operate under the current system. Have your fun if you like, but don't kid yourselves that you act with any official authority or sanction.

[Aside -- sheesh, at least when similar concepts have been brought up in the past, there was at least a democratic process, even if nobody ever voted.]

So since I obviously don't have near as much free time on my hands as the other members of my esteemed Congress ... Court ... thingy ... I'll just be the one who only chimes in on really important stuff, like ... umm ... Ok, so nothing really important comes to mind.

(And if I may say so, for me, a relative newbie not only to this forum but to life in general, to assume that I have any power whatsoever over anyone would be unwise, and Judges are supposed to be wise, so as a wise and competent Judge or Congressman (take your pick), I hereby make it clear that my authority is nonexistant. My residing on this court stems not from any attempt at power grabbing, but rather from my sense of humor, desire to up my post count, and me thinking it kinda cool that this thread grew so incredibly fast and I'm a part of it.)

So, in conclusion, continue on as you were, I will go back to studying Chemistry homework, until such a time arises when a Judge is needed.

And to clarify, as far as I'm concerned, that time will be never.

For this specific topic, we have had ad hoc elections for Hatrack President before. It was quickly shot down, but oddly, the person who was leading in the well-frequented polls was Papa Moose, who had made a splash with his community building, wisdom, and humor. He declined the honor on the grounds that the posters were goofing off entirely and the whole process was kind of tacky, but years later, he became Janitor, perhaps on the basis on the same qualities that made him such a popular favorite.

I don't know if I approve of the new people causing a ruckus. If only there were some sort of pseudo-organization to stop people from completely over-stepping their bounds. Perhaps it's time newbie’s (I really didn't want to use that word) settled down and learned their place. No one is persecuting you because you’re new, and your reacting as if you’re some sort of oppressed minority.

(Oh, katharina, you noticed! And you should notice that I remembered to spell your name with all "a"s. I always do, you know.)

Here is the original post:

You know, I believe Noemon is correct. I've heard that he always is right, and now I know it's true.

I can't believe I even started this thread. Why, it is rather presumptuous, don't you think? Here I come in and find a whole established, firmly entrenched community, and I begin starting threads left and right.

I don't believe I actually even know much of the lore of Hatrack. In fact, I hear tell there are a lot of odd tricks and history that I and my friends are not even aware of.

Does anyone know anything about that?

And it's his right to comment on how that frequency is perceived by others.

No one has told you to stop.

Edit: This was to advent before he deleted his last post to JT.

I was thinking the same thing Reticulum. And katharina, thanks for that delightful anecdote. I certainly never knew that. Eh, sorry advent, no hard feelings, but I officially resign my post as Judge. It seems have caused a bit to much controversy for me to remain in such a position. Best of luck to you and your Congress ... Court ... thingy.

Actually, it occurs to me that I am pretty much a newbie, myself.

And I have a sudden uncharacteristic desire to adopt a wee bit 'o British accent.

*hugs* Oh sweetie, it's okay. You can still be part of Hatrack without being the head of the lynch mob. Hatrackers seem to prefer governing themselves.

What is it that you like about Hatrack? Did something in particular draw you here? I can't remember why I joined, but I love the quote threads. [Smile]

*Bursts into song* I'll be your crying shoulder!

And I mean that in a really manly way.

Seriously though, this has been the fastest growing thread I've ever seen (and yes, oldtimers, I know, I haven't been around all that long, but allow us newbs to retain some dignity [Razz] )
If I had more time I would go into an in-depth explanation of why I personally am a fan of religious anarchy on Hatrack (with the mods and admins being gods). Maybe later.

*hands a tissue* Welcome to Hatrack. Everyone does something dumb when they first get here. I kept trying to pick fights with Tom Davidson, who ignored me entirely. All is not lost. [Smile] Do you like reading about politics, then? Is that why you like OSC?

ReticuIum, I always suspected that mean reputation was just a cover. Of course, the startling resemblence might have been a cover as well.

I don't remember saying anything to the contrary.

You're certainly free to do whatever you please here, as long as it conforms to the TOS. But even if it doesn't, I won't be the one to correct you on it, as I don't really have any say in the matter.

My only suggestion to you or any newbie would be to hang around long enough to figure out how things are normally done before deciding "to hell with the status quo, I make my own rules!"

Cause the thing is, there's a lot of things that aren't rules; more like mores. Just guidelines that most everyone tries to hold themselves to out of respect for the community. Some of them are little, like don't write in all caps, and some of them are bigger, like not bumping your own thread (that's not really a great example of something big cause I actually think that's a minor offense). None of these little things are enforceable, but all are along the lines of, say, holding open a door for someone. It's just a nice thing to do, and I think the overall courtesy most people here display is one of the things that make hatrack so special.

I'm well aware of the fact that I haven't be here all that long, in the grand scheme of things, so maybe someone else can say what I'm trying to say a little more clearly.

Edit: I got cloned?! Awesome. And the cloned me is dead right.

Why, Dr Strangelove, ye old bon-bon, are you talking in pirate talk?

Hunker down with me, laddie, and tell me if the pirate boys know any of the old tales of this ancient site.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Okay, enough crying Advent. Buck up, and be a part of it. You don't have to be in charge to do that.

Posted by JennaDean (Member # 8816) on :

El JT, how did you do that?

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Thats not me. Look at the member numbers. Its quite annoying for someone to impersonate me, especially as a pirate. Not that I have anything against pirates, but I would like to be a pirate when I choose to be a pirate. So whoever is doing that, please stop or go bug someone else.

But would you two knock it off with the pirate talk already?

Its even more annoying on screen than hearing it aloud.

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

And yes, I know that was also the fake Reticulum. Seriously, I'm starting to feel like I'm in some badly written sci-fi book with clones and the works.

Posted by JennaDean (Member # 8816) on :

[Dont Know] So we can have clones in Hatrack?

Wow, that's simultaneously annoying and tempting....

I'm a badly written character in the worst book ever! And to make it worse there are very few women in this story!

We're all doomed!

Posted by EI JT de Spang (Member # 9061) on :

But then again, I think that someone who had delved through the many onion-like layers of Hatrack to become fully embedded in its community, nay, even steeped in its lore, might be aware of a few tricks of the trade.

Friends, Hatrack has a heckuva history, and that's worth respecting. Now the real El JT has been kind enough about my using his pseudoalias, so the real me will be logging back out. (And no, I'm not Frisco. I just didn't want to be fooling on katharina, and I figured she'd catch the reference.)

O, ye friends, there is no need of the setting up of hierarchies, nor the superflous mega-posting and multi-thread-starting. Just enjoy the place. That's what it's here for.

And may I suggest bumping up some old threads after you read them, just to startle the old-timers a little bit? We get all freaked out when you try to fit in, and freaking out the elders is kinda fun.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

The fastest I remember was a teen angst thread about 6 months ago.

I think it went to 7 pages in an afternoon.

There was also one other really fast one a few months ago, but I'm not saying anything else about that one.

The "Hatrack Singles Bar" thread went to 12 pages in a little under 10 hours...I believe we all (yes, even you there, shaking your head) agreed it was a record at the time. Close behind was the "Good......OSC" thread, with 11 pages in half a day.

Can't say I've ever started another thread that went over four or five, though.

And, for the record, I thought CT was me, too. I was beginning to wonder how much I had to drink last night.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

Okay, the other teen angst thread I was thinking of went 4 pages in an afternoon, and 5 inside of 12 hours. Still pretty good.

Stupid mental exaggerations. Don't ask me how much I used to bench, or how far I used to walk to school -- no telling what kind of answer you'll get.

Posted by Mean Old Frisco (Member # 6666) on :

It's not how far you walked to school that counts, it's how steep the mountain was and how many yards of snow you walked through. Barefoot.

Yeah, but in this case, I think the clue is that the font used on the forum makes it difficult to discern between "Capital i" and "Lowercase L".

This thread should be the plot for Total Recall 2.

A man named Advent goes to one of those memory vacation centers and they implant the memory of him joining congress, and then having to overthrow the established government who in reality is Advent's father, a former janitor at a furniture store that specialized in making hatracks.

Madness ensues and eventually he loses his grip on reality, not knowing if he really is in congress, or is merely the son of a janitor, but eventually all the workers at the hatrack maker's shop prevail on him the reality of his situation and he escapes the memory world to return to sanity at the furniture shop.
