I know I'm rusty with Japanese, but I think this means "how pathetic."

The correct thing to say would've been...

wah~ kawaii ne!!! \(^o^)/

And I promise, that's the last time you'll see me do that ever.

In answer to the title question, only so long as the snake isn't hungry and they aren't regularly feeding the snake.

No, how pathetic would've been "kawaii soo ni," whereas "kawaii soo" is just an abbreviation for "kawaii soo desu," which simply means "Cute!"

(not that I'm, you know, any less rusty with Japanese)

I just fed one of my snakes two mice...she had them wrapped before they touched the ground. That is one lucky hamster....or one really stupid snake.

I had a teacher who kept a whole bunch of snakes, frogs, lizards, and turtles in his class room. He fed them during our exams, so rather then concentrating on our tests we'd all watch to see the snake eat the mice. One time there was a mouse left over for some time.
