Hey everyone! I need your help. My cousin is in a band that plays ska, rock, and other music. Recently they have had to change their name from "Wet Dog" to "Ska's the Limit," because some other band in Britian has the name Wet Dog. However, the band name they chose, "Ska's the Limit," sounds more like a tour name than a band name, so they're looking around for a new band name.
So does anyone on here have ANY ideas on what a good new name for them would be??

Go ask Dave Barry.

Oh... their website is: http://www.myspace.com/wetdogska . On it is some of their music, their band influences, members, and some other stuff. Please excuse the loud blue background, I didn't design it!!

I've always been a fan of I Don't Know, or IDK for short. Someone asks, "Who plays that song?". You say "I Don't Know". Get it? haha. I've always told myself if I started a band, it would be named I Don't Know.

I have thought "Black Stool" or "Dark Stool" would be a great name for a band ever since the doctor told me if i had black stool i should go to the emergency room. But that may be more of a metal name.
Or another favorite: Funky Brewster

I always thoght an interesting/funny name for a band would be "Unknown Artist". That way you could confuse everybody when they try to figure out who performs your songs.

You know what would make a cool band name? Somebody's Hatrack screen name. Like "advice for robots", "Synesthesia", "Stone Wolf", "Juxtapose", or my favorite, "The Tante Shvesters".
Posted by Evie3217 (Member # 5426) on :
Or Various Artists. That would be a good name too.

But I'll second Tante's: AlaSka
Then again: Tante and the Shvesters would leave people wondering "Just what is a Shvester?"
And how does one Shvest?

Yeah, AlaSka is a great name! Thanks again for all the ideas, ppl!

If you don't mind me asking, what is ska??? It's obviously a type/genre of music, but I'm not sure what differentiates it from rock or techno or rap or country or whatever....

These names are already taken, but I still think they are pretty darn creative: Wild Stallyns' Lone Rangers
Posted by demosthenes83191 (Member # 9071) on :
Ska is basically rock music with horns (trumpet, trombone, etc), and most of it is pretty upbeat.

I constructed a method for coming up with "band names" that you can try also. You will need two large bowls (or boxes, etc.). Next, make a HUGE list of adjectives on separate slips of paper. Then do the same with a HUGE list of nouns. Put the nouns in one bowl and the adjectives in the other bowl. Then (insert tympani roll here), select one slip of paper from each bowl and put them together with the adjective first and the noun second. The band names that you come up with will be truly amazing and limited only by your vocabulary. It is a great way to do it.
Some examples that have created from this method of determination include:
The Polish Sweatsock
The Blue Jockstrap
The Unlimited Volkswagon
The Computerized Silverware
The Transnational Eraser
The Electronic Pasta
The Military Cornflakes
An alternate method would be to utilize the noun first followed by the word "of" and then the adjective. Examples might include:
The Zit of Sparkling
The Buick of Dastardly
The Sneaker of Tiredness
You can have some real fun with this plan. Go ahead and enjoy.
Good luck with the band! Keep us informed, OK?

Ska is far more deeply rooted in calypso and mento, than rock. In fact it eventually lead to modern reggae.
Admittedly Rock was developed in the Southern US in the 50s and Ska came out in Jammaica in the 60s. I'm sure there was a least some cross influence.
