...never, ever, ever mess with the campus's dhall. Especially during term. And especially if there's only one of them.

Skidmore is generally wonderful, but we have only one dining hall (which we... almost affectionately call 'the dhall'). The Skidmore admin decided the dhall was old (which it is) and needed to be renovated (which it didn't). So how do they go about renovating it? They tear out its insides in the middle of winter break. Oh yeah, that was bright.

Now we have something like 1/10th of a dhall for the entire campus of 2000 students, and a lot of hungry students to feed. The food was bad, but its so much better than the current nothing. Do they offer any alternatives? No. Are we all starving? Yes. Are they taking all semester to do this? ...yes... Is anyone gonna be alive on the Skidmore campus come summer? Probably not.

We're all poor and few of us can afford to pay for food elsewhere. Yet our choices of food right now include fries, grilled cheeses, dried up pasta and... well soda and milk.

I have no doubt that the new dining hall will be brilliant. But couldn't they have at least started at like the begginning of last summer? Our summer is bloody near four months long, they could have had it mostly functional by the end of it. Who's bright idea was it to start it at the beginning of spring semester and make us all starve all semester??! GAHHH!!

DON'T MESS WITH A COLLEGE STUDENT'S FOOD SOURCE! EVER!!

*grumbles* [Grumble]

**** This rant has been brought to you by the numbskull college admin of Skidmore College. Thanks for listening. *****

Ohno!

Can you protest enough that they'll convince local restaurants to take on your mealplans?

Here at BYU-Idaho, we have three seasons. Winter, More Winter, Still Winter, and Construction. We haven't lost the dining areas yet, but construction on that building will begin probably this summer (College is open and at 3/4 capacity with 7000 students in the summer). We have blasting zone signs in high-traffic areas on campus quite often here. And the one thing they WON'T build is more parking.

Why build more lots. There arn't that many snow cats in town yet. Driving a car is chancie at best during three of those seasons. For those who have never been to Rexburg, The town dosen't have a snow plow. they just pack it down and let it go.

You have to admit that when they get done, it will be a beautiful campus.

I hope that they're not taking your money for a meal plan in those circumstances! If they did, they really need to give it back so you can at least use it to feed yourselves.

Somehow schools always manage to do stupid things like that.

Haha, here at UC davis, we know that UC stands for Under Construction. Get used to it I'm afraid, I think Dining Commons are always the first to get renovated because they are a)the one thing that definetly gets seen by visitors (parents). B) subject to alot of safety and capacity regs, and C)the one place that the admin people never go, so WHO CARES if its not functioning for the students?

Colleges and universities are excelent places to find some of the stupidist people on Earth. Usually it is staff but there are exceptions both ways. I believe that there is a higher proportion of stupid people than most think. I mean, it is a place of "learning", right? So they should be smart, right?...

My boss often says that campus is the place for people to get jobs who are too stupid to get jobs anywhere else.

Brought to you by someone who has spent nearly every day on a university campus as either a student or staff for the last 11 years. (Naturally, I'm an exception of the stupid category! [Big Grin] However, it isn't hard to become an "outstanding" staff member when everyone else is so unbelievably stupid. I'm pretty much fed up and am planning on leaving first chance I get...)

You've got to go complain to someone in the administration, the highest guy you can get to who can actually do something about your problem. If he doesn't do anything, try someone else. Bug everybody if you have to.

They very well might have alternatives in place, but haven't bothered to actually tell the students.

Heh. When I was at UCLA, we knew that too. Miraculously, most of the construction finished up shortly before I graduated. The last time I was on campus, there wasn't any!
