So I just got a copy of Stargate (the movie) and many significant parts of the movie the dialog is all in what I can only assume is ancient egyptian. There are no subtitles for reasons I can't understand. Are we supposed to be able to understand those?

iirc, they don't have subtitles early on because none of the earth characters understand what's being said. Later, the scientist who can read egyptian puts together the phonetics and they add subtitles because he understands what's being said. Pretty common device, actually.

The show is SO much better than the movie, that I confess I don't recall the movie particularly well. *shrug*

Yeah there are subtitles later on in the movie.

I really didn't think the movie was all that bad, though I think the casting for SG-1 in the role of Colonel O'Neill was genius, though James Spader was a good Daniel.

A hint for the subtitle-impaired:

Kree: "You! Heads up! Pay attention!" Can actually mean many things, including "WHAZZUP!" - but not often. Thankfully.

If you have Stargate the movie on DVD, sometimes you have to select one of the subtitle options to get the english translation on the screen. There might be two english subtitle options, one for the whole movie and one for just the non-english parts that you're meant to understand.

I watched it without subtitles and understood what was going on fine. There's one word that I got by the end and it was important and made me feel warm and fuzzy.

I kind of liked not having it explained.

It didn't bother me except for the long conversation between Jackson and Ra where I think Ra says he's going to send the bomb back through the gate to blow up Earth. Everything else I was able to figure out mostly to my satisfaction.

There are definitely supposed to be subtitles in the conversation between Ra and Jackson.

Yea, go to audio options and make sure the subtitles are turned on, not close captioniing, but the subtitles.
