I'm close to a few where I'm at. Now mind you, close for me could be a few hours away. An' then again, this'll all change in a couple of years anyway when I move again.

There is a map somewhere too. A couple of them, I think.

I'm actually relatively near all the Central Florida Hatrackers. Chris Bridges writes for the Daytona Beach News Journal and I go to school in Daytona Beach, and I guess Icarus and Kwea and some other people live over in the Orlando type area, which is about an hour away. And yet I am still not real [Frown]

Since we drove up to see Boon in Tulsa when we lived in Dallas, my definition of "reasonable" may be different.

But right now, I consider all of Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, all the way down to San Diego and probably even up a little further, too "reasonable". [Smile] rivka is the one I see most often right now, though-- not counting the two other Hatrackers who live in my house. [Wink]

Good Golly! I'm in Piscataway almost every day! I was there today. Twice. And I'll be there tomorrow, too! I'm in Highland Park, NJ.

I've been traveling through all the neighborhoods of Piscataway for a while now, and have yet to locate its "downtown". I mean, I know the street where the municipal building, police station, high school and municipal building are, but somehow, even with all that, Hoes Lane doesn't seem all that downtown-y to me.

Want to get together over coffee and meet up?

Sure, Tante! And I don't think Piscataway has a downtown, per se. I'd say Centennial Ave or Stelton Road would be the focal point, but that's even stretching it.

I just moved here from West Orange last year, actually.

I know there are a few other Hatrackers in Hawaii (jennabean and Zotto, maybe others) but I think I'm the only one on Maui. So we're *close* but might as well be thousands of miles away without wings or flippers.

So there isn't a lot of traffic between the islands? That's interesting.

On a tangent, I applied for a job at Pearl Harbor a month or so ago, but my appliation disappeared into the ether unacknowledged. [Frown] I suspect that every Domino Administrator in existence probably applied for that one.

Yay! Party in Chicago! I love both those museums and I seldom get to them unless I have out of town visitors.

Warning: Anybody here on a Sunday evening will be cajoled into going to the pub (n drinking required) where I sing.

Going to the pub sounds like fun, but unless I have a 3 day weekend it'll have to be a Friday or Saturday activity, which would mean not having the opportunity to hear you perform. What kind of stuff do you sing?

The planes fly 10-12 times a day, but it's gotten pretty expensive (~$130 RT if you buy tickets a week ahead), and a real pain with all the airport security and that. I go to Honolulu about 6-8 times a year for work, and I usually try to work in a weekend visit on those trips, but can't always make it happen. (For example, I'm gonna be over there for the 16th and 17th, but the Maui Interscholastic League wrestling championship is on the 18th, so I have to come home to watch my girl compete.)

My Sweet Baboo lives in Honolulu and he flies over here once a month or so, but it's getting harder financially to do so.

Almost afraid to say after the folk music thread, but I sing folk music. Mostly Irish, but some American, Scottish, and English as well.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

That's really unfortunate. I'd just assumed that there was some kind of barge service that would transport people between the islands. I guess they're probably too far apart for that to be practical, eh?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Are you with a band, or is it you up there alone with an instrument?

Posted by kmbboots (Member # 8576) on :

Not even that organized. It's an Irish sessiun (session). It's a couple of core people and whoever else shows up. They do tunes and from time to time I'll sing. Sometimes a capella, often the musicians know the stuff I do well enough that they will accompany me.

There are a couple on Sunday afternoons too. If you play anything, bring your instrument.

Posted by maui babe (Member # 1894) on :

Yes. There are passenger ferries between Maui and Lanai/Molokai, but they're not cheap either (~$50 RT per person) and only run 3-4 times a day. Then, if you don't know anyone on the other island, you'll have to rent a car, because there's no public transportation.

If you go to Oahu, you can probably get by without renting a car, as there's a decent bus line, and plenty taxis. I'm fortunate that I have a contact in Honolulu, so I never rent a car unless I need one for my work responsiblities and then I don't have to pay for it myself.

Just in the five years I've lived here it's gotten much harder to travel inter-island. Fortunately, I like living on Maui and don't feel a great need to get off very often, and with my work travel, I get over to Honolulu often enough to do whatever shopping I need to do there.

Hi Jhai, ESL and Celaeno! And all other No.Cal Hatrackers! I'm in San Jose =)

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

What kind of shopping are you unable to do on Maui (I'm finding this fascinating, by the way; I've wondered for some time what life was like on the different islands)?

Posted by maui babe (Member # 1894) on :

Shopping is quite limited here, compared with Honolulu. There is only one very small, poorly stocked craft store, for instance. I buy most of my yarn and other craft supplies online (which can be a problem with shipping) or in Honolulu. I *can* buy clothing, shoes, accessories, etc here, but there is a better selection and better prices over there.

Home decor things are hard to come by here. I've had to sew most of my curtains, for example. That is getting better now that KMart is merged with Sears.

Oddly enough, food supplies are not too dependable here, either. (Unless you count rice, papayas, bananas, pineapple and Spam... you can ALWAYS buy those [Big Grin] ) The Safeway here routinely runs out of milk, sour cream, yogurt, Frank's Red Hot Sauce (which can create a MAJOR crisis in my house, let me tell you) and other odd things. I've learned that when the store does have the products I like in stock (not milk, obviously, but non perishables) I buy as many as I can afford (or if there's a limit, etc).

I buy most of my groceries from Safeway or Costco, and I like to go to farmer's markets, but those are getting harder to find, too. There used to be one around the corner from my office that I'd hit a couple of times a week, but they're gone now. [Frown]

And yeah, Icarus, unfortunately I'm only 17. I don't look 17 or act 17, but the fact of the matter is, however much I try to deny it, I am 17. That's why I haven't posted at all in the Central Florida planning thread. If there's ever anything that ya'll would feel comfortable with me showing up for, let me know (I check my email everyday. I had no idea there were so many from the islands here on Hatrack. I lived on Oahu for about 6 years and made it to Maui a few times (have some potate chips for me, OK?). I also got to the Big island a few times also.

Now, however, I reside in the greater Los Angeles area. Not as exciting, I know, I know.

I actually think California's significantly more exciting than Hawaii. If it weren't, I might still be there.
