When pulling into my driveway this afternoon, coming home from work, my odometer read:

77777

That is all.

Umm, okay...

Last year, I hit 111111.

If I'd had a camera handy, I would've gotten a picture. [Smile]

Apparantly my dog got a bad case of diarrhea today. I get to go home and clean it up.

Good for you Stephan. [Evil]

My former coworker/new boss interviewed someone extraordinarily qualified for her old position, and she doesn't want to hire them because she's afraid they'll undermine her with their competence.

A former co-worker who recently retired brought doughnuts into the office today. MMMmmmm

KarlEd, I always notice those kinds of things and point them out to whoever is near. I still remember how excited we all were on a road trip on 7/7/77 when our odometer turned over to 77777. I don't remember where we were going or the purpose of the trip, but I do remember the odometer turning over. I'm a geek that way.

Me too, maui babe. In 1998 I parked at the same parking meter outside my work for 4 days in a row, and on all four days the time remaining on the meter when I went to put money in was 1:23. Nearly a decade later, that's still lodged in my brain.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

I sympathize. I'm looking forward to 06/06/06, 06:06 this year. [Smile]

I don't have anything random to contribute but must say that I am enjoying the posts thus far...(isn't that random in and of itself?)

I remember when a special announcement was made in our school in 1990. Apparently at 56 seconds past 12:36 p.m we would have 12:34:56 7/8/90.

This happens only once in a century so it made us feel special [Big Grin]

11/19/1999 was the last day in more than a thousand years that was composed of only odd numbers.

I remember hearing that on the radio that afternoon (and I do remember where I was and where I was going then).

Never mind. [Big Grin]

Before the millennium, I was always privately amused on the day in January when the date corresponded with the year, i.e. 1/9/99. Now I won't get to be amused like that again until the year 2100 - as if I'll live that long.

I think there's one little OCD room in my brain where if I sat down and thought about stuff like that for a while I'd go completely bonkers. I think I'd go bonkers because I'd feel like I had to commemorate every single one of those dates and times instead of just letting it pass on by.

I remember seeing some guy wearing a hat that said "01/01/01." I must have stared at the hat for a second, and he gave me a look that said, "Yeah, so?"

What about 01/01/01, 02/02/02, 03/03/03, 04/04/04, 05/05/05, 06/06/06, 07/07/07, 08/08/08, 09/09/09, 10/10/10, 11/11/11, and 12/12/12? All of those work, don't they?

Edit:

My bad, you said the date in January. I'd not noticed that part. Sorry.

Well, after the year 2000 started, it'd have to be February for it to work. But February doesn't have a day that can work with the zeroes in the middle...2/0/06, anyone? [Wink]

Posted by GaalDornick (Member # 8880) on :

Steve, it doesn't have to be in January, but 1/9/99 reads out the same as 1999, the year it took place in. 01/01/01 would read as 010101, and that year isn't not happening anytime soon.

I apologize. I guess I didn't quite understand the concept you were suggesting. My bad. (God, I hate that saying. But it refuses to go away!)

It was cold last night, so my dog and my cat slept on the same pillow [Smile] I love them.

Wait, this thread's about random things that happened right? Or is it just about dates [Frown]

Posted by Nell Gwyn (Member # 8291) on :

No need to apologize, Steve. I was actually wondering when I wrote that if my explanation even made sense. [Smile]

I apologize anyway.

It is about random things...

My cat disappeared about a week ago. He never goes outside - he never even tried. I think he might have fallen out a window (onto the front Lanai, not all the way to the ground) and just can't figure out how to get home. I've been calling and shaking his food dish and leaving food out for him, but I'm starting to think he's gone forever. [Frown] He's not so smart, I'm afraid.

I've been worried because it's been very wet, windy and (relatively) cold. But SOMETHING is eating the cat food I'm putting out every night.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Aw, maui, I'm sorry. [Frown]

Hopefully he'll make it back ok. Hopefully the something eating the food is him.

Posted by Kitsune (Member # 8290) on :

Aww! Poor kitty [Frown] Maybe he found a ladycat friend?

My cat has 7 toes on one paw!

Posted by maui babe (Member # 1894) on :

Nah, he's an it, so I doubt it.

When an animal has extra digits like that it's called "polydactyl"

We once had a cat with 7 toes on one foot and 8 on the other. He was a great hunter with all those extra claws.

Posted by Kitsune (Member # 8290) on :

Oh, how cool! Yeah, when my cat stretches, all the claws come out and I get a bit intimidated.

I just went to my dryer to get out my school shirt for tomorrow. The dryer was still running when I went to it, but I wanted to check if the shirt was already dry so I can put it out for tomorrow morning. As soon as I put my hand close to the dryer to open it up, it finished it's cycle. Coincidence? Or Destiny? *goes off to bed*

I'm making a Hershey's syrup cake right now. It smells so good. I'm so glad we buy Hershey's syrup in bulk; comes in handy when you want to make a chocolate cake and are short on cocoa and have no baking chocolate in the house. [Smile]

I have an uncle who was born with six toes on one foot. They removed one of them surgically, though.

I want to go get something to drink but my roommate is entertaining someone and I don't want to interrupt them.

I am, however, quite parched and I believe I shall have to make an intrusion shortly. Also because I have to get to bed at some point tonight...

Polydactyly is a fascinating condition, much more common in animals than humans, although it's a not-uncommon mutation. I have a niece who was born with an extra digit on each hand, and they just tied them off (very little tissue connected them) and then snipped them with scissors at her two-week checkup. [Smile]

Syndactyly, on the other hand, is a lot harder to correct, and is often associated with much more serious defects.

I used to work at a flower shop and today I went to pick up some pre-valentine roses and there were two giant refrigerated trucks outside... full of roses! But one of the trucks was left on over night and 200 bunches (25 roses a bunch) froze to death!!!!! IT WAS SAD.

I was with a bunch of friends trying to take out a Circle of Thorns head mage in his hideout last night and this succubus jumped out of nowhere and wiped us out.

I like beans, but my favorite beans are black beans. Black beans are also called turtle beans, but I don't know why. This week I cooked up a pound of black beans in the beginning of the week, and during the week we ate black beans and rice, vegetable cutlets with bean gravy, eggplant stew with black beans over polenta. For Shabbos, instead of cholent, I'm making chili with kidney, pinto, and black beans (and Giant White Corn -- Maiz Mote Pelado).

I have a specific bowl that I use to eat all of my cerealand most of my other meals as well. It is very small to ensure I don't eat too much in one sitting. I recently ate black bean soup out of it--it was good and easy to make.

I made bread yesterday, not so much so that I would have bread to eat (although that's good too), but so I could have the baking bread smell spread throughout my house.

Hehe, maybe you have to be a geek to appreciate this, but...

...at 01:11:11 on 01/10/10, the binary representation (011111011010) will be equivalent to the decimal representation of that year (2010). And, at the exact same time/date the following year (2011) it will be the binary representation for that year as well.

I wanted to make bean soup for dinner last night but my daughter begged me to make chicken instead. So I'll probably make bean soup on Saturday instead, which is fine, because then I'll have time to make rolls to go with it.

It's been chilly here (mid to upper 50's up on the mountain where I live - I know, I know. It's chilly to me) so a pot of soup would feel nice I think.
