Our baby boy, who still hasn't reached his due date, is in the hospital with RSV. Beverly took him in yesterday afternoon. It's a good thing too -- he's gotten worse. They have been suctioning out a lot of fluid out of his lungs.

edit: The title is changed for you, Rivka

I am so sorry. He will be in my prayers, as will your entire family. I know all too well what you are going through (although Aerin had viral pneumonia, not RSV). If you need anything or just want to talk to someone who has gone through what you are going through, call anytime day or night. beverly has my numbers.

I know it's terrifying, but he will pull through. Aerin did and Xerxes has a lot more in the plus column than she did - he's much bigger and he doesn't have any lung scarring. Plus, he's getting lots of good immunities from beverly's breast milk. They'll give him all the respiratory support he needs and he'll lick this bug.

I am home from the hospital, for now. I don't like being away from X, but I have things here I need to be doing, and kids who need to see that they still have a Mom.

X has an IV, blood-gas monitors, and a CPAP machine. He may remain like this for days. If he gets worse, they will put him on a ventillator. I am not able to hold him and he is not able to handle digesting my milk ATM. Too much energy involved in the digestion process. (Though I'm not sure I'm comfortable with their analysis of the situation--for now I defer to their judgement.)

He is so frail and weak and tired. Breathing is such hard work for him in spite of the breathing treatments and suction. You can see it in the way his chest and abdomen move when he breathes. You can see it in the way his heartrate is too high and his breathing too fast.

Thank you for your care, concern and prayers. I am confident he will pull through this, but in the meantime, we are all just hanging on.

beverly, it's standard for them to stop feedings in cases like X's. Aerin didn't eat until they took her off the vent. When they need that level of respiratory support, digestion is too much for their little bodies. You can see it in their stats if they get fed too soon - they drop dramatically. I'm guessing they'll probably start with small amounts through a feeding tube when he's more stable.

I'm glad to hear that he's not intubated, but don't be upset if he does end up needing to be. He'll probably go along as he is for about a week and then, one day, decide to get better. That's how it happened with Aerin and the nurses told me that that's pretty much how it goes with all of them.

Again, please don't hesitate to call me if there's anything you want to ask about or if you just want to talk.

Mrs. M is exactly right, beverly. It was the same with Nathan -- I couldn't feed him, either -- it was just too much for his 3 week old body to handle.

When they started minimal feedings through a nose tube, they used my breastmilk, though. I'd like to offer my ears, if you need them, too. Drop me an e-mail, I'll send you the number.

*sigh*

Yeah, I hoped it wouldn't come to this. But it is needed. He seemed to be doing so well in all the numbers, but occasionally his heartrate would drop without warning or his breathing pattern would deteriorate in a frightening way. It was clear that he just didn't have the energy to "survive" without extra help and quick. We recognize that without the wonders of modern medicine, he wouldn't be alive at all right now.

So the ventillator is what he needs. Thanks, Mrs. M and Shan. I have no experience with this, and the nurses have been telling me the same thing. I appreciate the offers to talk about it. I may not have the time and emotional energy to take you up on it at this time (I am spread pretty thin), but it is appreciated. :sad smile:

I will at the very least make updates to this thread when I can.

Me, too. I'm glad they're feeding him again.

Aerin was intubated for 2 weeks, which I believe is pretty standard.

The thing that bothered me most was that they pumped Aerin so full of fluids that she swelled up like a balloon. It didn't bother her at all, but it really got to me. I guess it's because it was something I hadn't seen before - I'd seen her intubated and with IVs and monitors for most of her life, but never swollen.

Posted by Theaca (Member # 8325) on :

I don't know much about babies, but very ill adults sometimes need extra fluid to keep the blood pressure and heart rate normalized, because the fluids keep leaking into the tissues. End result is patient looks swollen and gains tons of weight. As soon as the health improves the fluid goes back into the vessels and the swelling gradually resolves.

I got to see Xerxes again today. He's doing much better.

He's responding very well to his feedings, and they've been getting bigger and bigger. They've ramped down the respirator and he's doing some breathing on his own.

The biggest problem is that he's still producing a lot of fluid

Tatiana, from what I remember when my kids had RSV (it stands for respiratory syncytial virus *thanks maui babe, I was editing as you posted but you were quicker*). From what I understood, it is the same virus as the cold in adults but it is very dangerous to infants. Once they hit a certain age (I can't remember but it seems around 24 months) that it's not as dangerous.

Glad to hear that Baby X is doing better. Best wishes for continued improvement!

RSV = Respiratory Syncytial Virus

A syncytium is when a bunch of cells all kind of merge into one large mass.

Posted by Theaca (Member # 8325) on :

RSV isn't actually the same thing as a common cold virus, but the symptoms are usually mild and almost identical to a common cold in adults. It's usually only dangerous to infants/young kids. The elderly are at risk of a more severe RSV infection, I've just learned.

I'm so glad he's doing well (as well as can be expected). It's great that he's doing some breathing on his own. I remember them telling me how many breaths Aerin was doing herself each day. Feeding is always a good sign and the bigger the amount, the better.

You say he's producing a lot of fluid, but what's the consistency? Aerin's started out pretty thick and got thinner as she got better.

My entire family is praying for him and I think about him constantly. I even mentioned him to my pediatrician when Aerin was getting her Synagis shot.

You know, I have been thinking about this. Xerxes has a little roommate who was just taken off his respirator today (he was on for exactly a week) and while he is a big baby, he seems extremely, even disturbingly, plump. I mean, even his head is fat, if you know what I mean.

And I've been wondering if I'm going crazy, but Xerxes seems to be more plump every time I look at him. His cheeks seem very round, and even the skin around his temples is widening. I am assuming that it is the swelling. And yes, I am not thrilled about it.

This:
quote:
I don't know much about babies, but very ill adults sometimes need extra fluid to keep the blood pressure and heart rate normalized, because the fluids keep leaking into the tissues. End result is patient looks swollen and gains tons of weight. As soon as the health improves the fluid goes back into the vessels and the swelling gradually resolves.
, however, is very informative and comforting. I guess it is normal and perhaps even good? I know they said at the hospital that this kind of fluid retention can happen on the respirator and on an IV, though I am not entirely clear on why.

Yup, things are stable. I must admit to being a tad bit jealous when I see Xerxes roomie cuddled freely by his mommie now that he is off the respirator. I can't wait to cuddle my baby again!

quote:
You say he's producing a lot of fluid, but what's the consistency? Aerin's started out pretty thick and got thinner as she got better.
The secretions are still *very* thick, unfortunately. [Frown]

I saw the same thing. You're not crazy.

Posted by Mrs.M (Member # 2943) on :

They'll get thinner. With Aerin, there was no change until one day shejust decided to get better and then she sailed through her recovery. It's always been like that with her, but the nurses told me that almost all the RSV babies are like that. Try to remember that things will improve as quickly as they declined, once he gets past the hump.

The swelling does go down pretty quickly after they stop the fluids. They'll probably give him a diuretic to help him flush them out. Aerin had to have new diapers every 45 minutes for about a day, then she was pretty much back to normal.

The hardest thing in the world is not being able to hold your baby. Every instinct is screaming at you to pick her up and comfort her, but you just can't. When you finally do get to hold him, you'll see his stats improve almost the second you pick him up.

I'm praying all the time that he'll soon be back in your arms where he belongs.

Posted by Theaca (Member # 8325) on :

Mmmm, I wouldn't say the fluid retention is good. It's just something that happens. In healthy younger adults, it has to do with factors such as the amount of salt in the IV and in IV antibiotics and the nutrition level. Most importantly people who are septic with a bacteria have leakier vessels from the infection, causing more swelling and requiring more fluid to keep blood pressure up. Since adults don't usually get critically ill from RSV I don't know if RSV causes leaky vessels or not. In general, whatever the reason, it improves when the patient improves.

I was wondering how he's doing today. Let us know if you have the time.

Right On: The consistency of the lung poop has gotten better, and they're starting to talk about taking him of the respirator and back onto the CPAP.

Right Off: They moved Xerxes to a different room, so now Beverly isn't able to sleep in the same room with the baby.

Slight correction: the ventillator is currently working as a CPAP (no breaths given, only soft, constant pressure to make inhaling easier.) So, when they take him off of the ventillator, he won't need to go on CPAP. He may need to stay on oxygen, though.

The cool thing is that he isn't on oxygen at all right now. If he needs it later it will be because the mucous is building up in his lungs again. With the ventillator, it is really easy to suction his lungs. When he is off, they will be limited to suctioning through his nose.

That is why they are reeeeally hesitant to take him off the ventillator unless the mucous slows down. It *is* thinning, though, which is a good start.

Yeah, I'm bugged about the room change. [Mad] They moved me for the convenience of the respiratory therapist. I used to be rooming with another baby who was on a ventillator, but since that baby is off of it, he doesn't need a resp therapist anymore. There was another room with a baby who desperately needs the resp therapist, so they moved me in there In fact, I haven't even been moved into my sleeping room yet, so for the last 3 hours or so, I was "homeless". [Wink] I am pretty grumpy--an introvert with no place to hide away. :grump grump:

It's wonderful that he's improving so quickly. I'm not surprised that they want to keep him tubed for suctioning - they can do it so much more effectively that way. Aerin's stats always got immediately better after they suctioned her.

I'm surprised that you have roommates. Is the hospital very small or is it just very full? They should do some respiratory therapy after the baby is extubated, just not round the clock. Aerin got some right up until she was discharged. Every 2 hours the therapist would pound on her (gently) with this little rubber cup thingy. She loved it. It kept the mucous loose and helped her to breathe better.

I am overjoyed!!! What a quick recovery - you've got a strong little man there. They released Aerin after she was off oxygen for 24 hours.

Don't be surprised if he's hoarse for a while - it'll go away eventually.

Also, make sure that the doctors and/or nurses talk to you about RSV prevention. I had never heard of Synagis before and I had no idea that bleach is the only thing that kills RSV. They might have even more tips.

I am so glad your baby boy is doing better. I have a 17 month old son who was in the hospital recently. I never knew the extant of worry I could feel. (He appears to be fine now).

WOoHOo for your family!

I was pretty sure he'd be discharged before today, but I'm still ecstatic. It's such a relief to have them home, but it's nerve-wracking, too. I have to admit that I still listen to Aerin's chest every day.

Did they give him Synagis?

I just want to say, thank you to all of you who stood vigil with us, for your caring thoughts and prayers. It is so good to have our baby home!

He wasn't "himself" for awhile, I assume, because he was going through withdrawl from the opiate sedatives. The sedatives are necessary to keep intubated babies from removing their tubes (which Xerxes did one time anyway). They try to use the sedatives as sparingly as possible, and sometimes the babies go long hours without them and even lie there awake and content for hours.

But withdrawl from the sedatives brings on crankiness and restlessness. Our normally sweet-natured Xerxes just couldn't sleep very long and was keeping me up at night. The last night I spent with him in the hospital, I had to ask for help from the nurses twice so I could sleep. They held him for me.

That last day in the hospital was so lonely. While Xerxes was intubated, he had round-the-clock nurse observation and care. That last day they would check on us, but infrequently. I missed their lovely company. It was comforting and fun. We had such great nurses. [Smile]

But now that I could hold him and feed him, I just couldn't justify leaving him. It just killed me to have to leave and not take him with me. It was great slowly seeing more and more tubes and wires removed over time.

Xerxes has also been ravenous since being tube-free. That has been difficult as well. But things are slowly getting back to normal. The first night especially, I watched over him with fear that he might need to be rushed to the hospital for a last deep suctioning. But he pulled through fine. He still gets rather stuffy at night, but nothing we can't handle together. [Smile]

Having my mother here was such a pleasure and relief. It was sad to say goodbye to her today, but gladly both my parents will be back to visit in a week and a half.

Thank you all again. It was wonderful for both Porter and I to know that you are here and you care. [Smile]

No. I totally forgot to ask about this. [Frown]

I know it has been awhile, but I was going through the photos I took at the time and it just brought everything back again. I don't know if y'all care, but I wanted to share them with you.

Intubated

Getting better, held by his Grandma.

Healthy and robust just a couple days ago.

He looks FANTASTIC!!! His little nose is especially cute.

Are you relaxing at all? I'm taking baby steps, but I won't really relax until May (end of RSV season). Our stupid microwave sounds just like Aerin's monitor and it went off just when I was looking at the intubated picture. Of course I ran into Aerin's room to check on her.

Oh, he's so tiny to be in the hospital. Brings back memories of my baby in hospital at 3 weeks. It hurts to see them so helpless and all wired up.

Glad to see him looking so much better! He's really cute. [Smile]
