So I bought this lamp from IKEA in December. I no longer have the receipt. The lamp no longer works. I find this very annoying. Can I return it even without the receipt? Their website says otherwise, but websites often have disinformation to scare off customers.

Where's the closest IKEA? I've had luck returning things without the receipt, but they're usually in working order. What's wrong with the lamp?

Not having the receipt is no big deal if you just want to swap out for a working version of what you already own, I'd think.

You can always try. What could it hurt?

The closest IKEA is actually in walking distance of my apartment. As for not working, well, it doesn't give a light when you flick the switch. And yes, I did check the lightbulb. [Smile]

I suppose we'll just try it.

I was just thinking it might save you the hassle of returning it to just fix it. There literally isn't a simpler piece of furniture than a lamp. If it's not the bulb, it's the switch. Or the cord.

That kind of sounds interesting. Care to elaborate more?

Hmm. It turns out that if you ding the lamp hard against the wall, it begins working again. Probably a loose connection.

I'd call and make a big stink. They'll probably tell you to come in and exchange it for one that works just to get you off the phone. [Big Grin]

Eh, for a ten-dollar lamp, I don't know if I can be bothered. It's working again, anyway.

IKEA lost my business forever with the "Only poor people can come to our store" ad campaign.

I'm sure it seemed cute in socialist sweden or wherever they're from but all it did was crawl under my skin.

KoM, be concerned about electrical equipment that works because of a bang - loose connections can lead to dangerous arcing.

Ooh, is that the trick? I need to find some electrical things with loose connections. . .

Pix, I missed out on that one... I think i should be glad, because I actually DO like Ikea.

KoM, my local store has recently gotten much more strict about returns and exchanges. I'd bought a desk chair that broke within a week. The hydraulic core punched right through the base. Of course, by that point I'd thrown out the packaging and couldn't locate my receipt. No refund, no exchange. I ended up buying a second chair and using that receipt and box to return the broken one.

And I second Dag's comment about loose wiring. If percussive maintenance is enough to "fix" the problem, you need to get rid of it before it causes a fire. Go buy a new lamp and return the old one with the receipt LOL.
