It is not yet certain (I should know definitely by Tuesday night), but there is a good chance I will be in NYC (most likely Manhattan) for a few days in early March.

Sunday, March 5 is probably free. Anybody wanna do lunch?

[Wave] <-- also raising hand

For you, honey, I'll put in for a day off from work.

Can we call our get-together "KosherCon"?

Best. Con name. Ever.

I would, but I have to work 1st shift that day and the next. I plan on taking some vacation time in June so I have to be at work every day that I have to be until then.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Maybe next time, Stan.

To the rest of y'all, yay! [Smile]

Just a warning: I can't stay out as late this time. I'll be in NYC to work. But Sunday should be free.

*bounces*

yeah, he spoils all the fun, that one...

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Not really. We just force-fed him kosher coffee. Not a problem.

coffee?

If I recall correctly, four Orthodox Jews toured the Metropolitan Museum's Egypt Exhibit, saying things like "My people built those pyramids, when we were slaves in Egypt".

IIRC, only one of us said that. I leave which one as an exercise for the reader. [Big Grin]

I love Hatrack.

I have tickets.

I expect arriving (8 am), getting to my hotel (mid-town Manhattan, most likely), and checking in should mean I'll be available 11-ish or so.

Where are we meeting up?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Aww, wish I could... I miss our little kosher excursions, rivka!! We'll have to do lunch some other time. [Smile]

Ah yes, I knew there was a good bit about kosher coffee in "The Promise." Reuven is talking to his best friend, Danny, about some fairly serious problems in his life, and the following conversation ensues:

There was a tense silence.
"I'll survive," I said.
He was quiet.
"If I can have another cup of coffee."
He smiled then and got slowly to his feet.
"One derives great moral strangth from a cup of coffee," I said.
"Kosher coffee," Danny said.
"Yes, of course. Kosher coffee. Of course."

It's not exactly earth shattering, I admit, but I do like it.

I just told my supervisor that I will be taking the day off on Sunday March 5th. I'll take the train into Penn Station, and can meet up with you wherever you like. How about at the lobby of your hotel?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Sounds good.

Once I figure out what hotel that would be. [Wink]

Posted by Shmuel (Member # 7586) on :

Hmm. I might be up for this. Lemme think it over. (I missed this thread until now, and I'd need to work out the logistics of the round trip from Boston.)

Posted by Shmuel (Member # 7586) on :

Alas, at this point, figuring out whether I can cover the $15 each way on Fung Wah Bus is an important factor in my considerations.

Hey! You don't have to be Kosher to enjoy KosherCon! All are welcome. [Smile]

Hey! We can make Shmuel real! [Big Grin] (Um, you're not already, right?)

And mack, I don't wanna hear any of this "if" stuff. Capiche?

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Yeah, Jamie. If you can come, then you'll get to meet me! I'm sure that this experience alone will be worth the journey. [Monkeys]

Well, that's certainly a better idea than what we did last time. . .

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

True.

But that was mostly my fault. And the fault of my cell phone.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Four of us wandering around the huge New York Penn Station, calling each other on our cell phones.

"Where are you now?"
"In front of the Dunkin Donuts."
"Which Dunkin Donuts?"
"The one on the concourse."
"Which concourse?"

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

You forgot the part where my phone kept dropping calls. Or missing them entirely, so the first I'd know about a call was when a voicemail came in.

So if I come will someone spoil my taste for Manishewitz gefilte fish by introducing me to the real stuff?

Yes, I'm in the NY area. But I don't know my schedule for that weekend. I'd like to come though.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Dunno. Adam might know if there are any restaurants in the area we're talking about that serve stereotypical "kosher-style" (yet actually kosher [Wink] ) food. But I'd rather take the opportunity to have kosher food of types that I cannot get here -- like Indian. I really enjoyed the place we went to last time.

What I do know is I'd love to meet you in person, Glenn. [Smile] If you can manage it, please do join us!

They make the best gefilte fish curry. And their matzah ball vindaloo is to die for!

I vote for going to Abigael's for the coffee theater. It is a lifelong dream of mine to experience that someday.

It is not my lifelong dream to eat lunch at Abigael's. Just to experience the "Coffee Theater".

Which I bet is on the pricey side, too.

Well, my birthday is in July. Maybe I can get my husband to take me then, and fulfill my lifelong dream.

Indian sounds great -- we really cannot get that here. And is there a Thai place? I miss kosher Thai.

Posted by Anti-Chris (Member # 4452) on :

Oh lord, I love Thai. I've only had Indian food once, except for curry. Grew up on homemade curry my mom made, so it's probably not authentic.

Yes, in Miami, we have kosher Thai. Keep us in mind for your future travel plans. [Big Grin]

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

narrativium, can you get some take-out kosher Thai and meet us?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I haven't been in Miami for about 20 years.

I think it's more likely that we'll get a kosher Thai restaurant here again.

But you never know, I 'spose.

Posted by Glenn Arnold (Member # 3192) on :

OK, I've got the date free. But as of yet I don't see where we're meeting. This is important, because I'm a Luddite, and I don't have a cell phone.

(Considers starting another thread admitting that I finally got a TV)

Posted by narrativium (Member # 3230) on :

Sorry, nope, I have to be at a play rehearsal that day.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

Yeah, rivka. Do you know what hotel you'll be at?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Oops. Yup.

This one. Although their site lists a slightly different address. I guess those are the two sides of the building?

Posted by Glenn Arnold (Member # 3192) on :

Well, it's your party, I guess. Pick an address and a time. I'm bringing my wife. (safer than explaining that I'm going to meet a bunch of women at a hotel in NY)

Meeting in the lobby, I presume?

Note: I have a pretty bad case of GERD, so vindaloo is out.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Lobby sounds good. [Smile] I think there's just the one lobby, accessible from both sides of the building? If not, I say go with the second, as that's the site I booked through.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Shall we say noon?

And does that mean all Indian food is out? Or do Indian places usually have stuff you can have, Glenn?

Posted by Glenn Arnold (Member # 3192) on :

It was more of a heads up. Indian food is usually pretty spicy, and I'm not familiar enough with it to say whether it's reasonable to go into an indian restaurant and expect to find something I can eat. But I've had vindaloo, and it's out of the question.

If you guys have your heart set on indian I'll make do, but gefilte fish would be easier on the tum.

Actually, this may sound weird, but I find that the easiest place to find food I can eat is in mexican restaurants.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Adam may have experience with the restaurant(s) in question . . .

Oh, Adam!

Posted by Uprooted (Member # 8353) on :

*Grumbling with envy because this sounds like a really fun con and misses NYC and can't go.* [Grumble]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

So it sounds like Indian might not be the best choice. What about Chinese?

Posted by Glenn Arnold (Member # 3192) on :

Chinese is fine. Especially in NYC. (Don't know why, but most ethnic food tastes better in NYC)

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Indian places generally have completely non-spicy dishes on the menu, if you ask the server. [Smile]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Excellent, Glenn. [Smile]

Well, rivka, it is Hatrack, so, wear a hat. Or a snood. Or, what the hey, a sheitl.

I'll be wearing a sheitl AND a hat. 'Cause I'm Ultra.

Well, guys, I know you are all waiting, breathlessly, eagerly, impatiently, for the report of how KosherCon2006 went, and if Glenn ever got to figure out this joke: [Hail] [Hat]

Well, poor rivka, all tuckered out from her transcontinental flight, and unacclimated to the brisk New York climate, was a real trouper, trouping around the city streets towards the beacon guiding us all -- Kosher Chinese food. Adam, Glenn, the charming Mrs. Arnold, rivka and I all ate tasty soup and crunchy noodles and sipped tea out of tiny cups without handles. Photos were taken, including one of ME kneeling on Theodore Dreiser on the NYC sidewalk, while tall Glenn stood over me and took my picture. This was in a bold effort to make me look more photogenic. When the pictures get posted (and, hey! when are the pictures going to get posted?) you can judge for yourself to see if the effort bore fruit.

And yeah, Glenn got the joke. The brilliance of Adam's joke is that he condensed 20 minutes of explanation, exposition, and retelling into the poetically succinct [Hail] [Hat]

Thanks to all for getting together. I had a lovely time in your company.

Posted by Glenn Arnold (Member # 3192) on :

"and, hey! when are the pictures going to get posted?"

I'm working on it. The camera saves the files at 8MB, so I'm photoshopping them down to a reasonable size for screen display. Then I'll pick the best ones and send them to Adam so he can post them.

It's report card time, so I've been kinda busy.

That'd be pretty hard to justify, especially with some of my students pulling a solid 11%.

I emailed my selection of photos to Adam. It's up to him now.

Edit: sorry I was wrong, he's here.

And my mom once had a ceramics student who should have gotten a negative 5%, because of late reductions.
