Md. Senator Saves His Challenger From Choking

quote:
For a year, Jim Rosapepe has loomed as Maryland Sen. John Giannetti's biggest political threat, taking public jabs at him and raising an imposing sum for what could become one of the year's most bitter and negative legislative campaigns.

So wouldn't fate have it that Giannetti was sitting in the bar of an Italian restaurant in Annapolis when the former delegate stumbled in from the dining room, doubled over, eyes bulging and gesticulating as though he were trying to cough -- choking.

That's... wow. That's hilarious. In a good way.

Man, if that doesn't become a Law and Order episode, I'll be shocked. [Big Grin]

I love it.

I think that's awesome. [Big Grin]

Oh, what a sweetheart.

Why is it such a big deal? Is it so odd that someone would save the life of someone who is a political opponent? As if winning an election was more important than saving someone's life.

It would only be a big deal if it was strange for someone to save someone else's life - that's pretty sad because it implies that he should not have saved the man's life just because they are political opponents.

I think the Senator no doubt realized how bad it would look if the guy died and he didn't at least try to save him. [Dont Know]

jh, it's basically a comment on the stereotype of politicians. I doubt anyone is actually surprised.

Its ironic because of all the people in the restaurant to save him, he was the one to do it. He could easily have just done what everyone else in the restaurant did: claim to not have realized what was going on, or no knowledge of what to do.

He'll hear about it at the next party meeting. Howard Dean, as a doctor, should be proud of his fellow Democrats.

However, Howard Dean, as "leader" of the Democratic Party, would be shocked at the level of humanity he showed.

I'm mostly just shocked that they were at the same place at the same time when the guy choked. I mean, what are the odds?

In a state capital? Pretty good, actually. Every legislative center tends to have four or five "regular" restaurants which, if you bombed them on any random night, would take out a decent percentage of that region's politicians.

My mistake, I didn't realize he was a state senator.

Brilliant!

Or you could just bomb the Capital on the night of the State of the Union.

I'm really surprised more people don't try that. I mean, I know, crazy security, but wouldn't it be worth the money and the brains required to get around the crazy security?

"My first reaction was that God is good," Maloney said. "And He has a sense of humor."

Lyrhawn,

Do you have a particular point to make, or did you figure you'd toss in a jab at Dean, just for the heck of it?

Though I will admit to making jokes when Bush choked on that pretzel a few years ago (after all, we all know that what really happened was that Cheney beat him up for saying something stupid, again. And Bush was supposed to say that he "walked into a door.")

Alright, then. nevermind.

Crazy security doesn't even begin to explain the heightened level of the situation. During the State of the Union address, you'd be hard pressed to get within a block of the Capitol, much less get close enough to detonate a bomb that would reach the rotunda...

I agree with THT, a land-based bomb couldn't make it to the Capitol.

a 1996 best-selling novel by Tom Clancy, "Executive Orders," included a Boeing 747 piloted by a terrorist into Congress during a State of the Union address.
That's how Jack Ryan became President. When that book came out, I thought it sounded very implausible. That was before 9/11. [Frown]
