Late this afternoon (Wed. Mar. 1) Detroit City Council voted 6-3 to turn over administrative control of the Detroit Zoo to the Detroit Zoological Society--a move that means the Zoo will stay open. With some refinements in language, this is essentially the same proposal that they voted against two weeks ago. The enormous public outcry caused them to rethink what they were doing. Now they deny they ever meant for the Zoo to close, but they and everyone else knew at the time it did mean the Zoo would close, and temination notices began going out to Zoo employees. We in the Detroit area are very glad that in the future, administration of the Zoo will no longer be in the hands of Detroit City Council. After all, the Zoo isn't even in Detroit, it is in Royal Oak, two miles north of the Detroit border. And the Detroit Zoological Society cares about the Zoo.

That is SO cool, I love the Detroit Zoo! I haven't been there in years, of course, but I have a lot of memories there. [Big Grin]

My favorite part of this whole debacle, is that the Detroit City Council voted basically for the same resolution that they voted against a couple weeks ago, claiming that it was never their intention to close the zoo, when clearly it was.

Detroit City Council -"We're voting against this measure, and blame it on Kwame."

Detroit Suburbs - "What the hell!? GRUMBLE GRUMBLE MOB MOB!"

Detroit City Council - "What? We aren't CLOSING the Detroit Zoo! That was never our intention! It was all a test to see if you were paying attention, congratulations for fulfilling your civic duty! Now if the US Postal Service will be so kind as to return all those pink slips we sent out..."

Hooray for the zoo!

What I don't understand is if the zoo isn't within the Detroit city limits, then what right, privelege or anything else does the Detroit city council have to determine the fate of the zoo?

Because the city still OWNS the zoo.
