Does anyone here play an instrumment?

I play trumpet, guitar, recorder, and mouthbow. I want to play percussion and the clarinet.

Posted by Celaeno (Member # 8562) on :

I play most percussion, but I specialize in snare and timpani.

I also play sanshin and koto, Okinawan style.

Posted by Celaeno (Member # 8562) on :

Oh, and I used to play clarinet. I quit when I learned that my fingers were too tiny to cover the holes.

Jeesh, you kind of want to be me. [Wink]

Ehh, I love my trumpet, wouldn't give it up, not even if I would learn clarinet.

TRUMPET RULES!!!

Got to practice guitar.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I saw a left-handed guitar at the thrift store the other day and thought of you, Syn.

I played the clarinet for 15 years, and played the saxophone on and off during that time.

Now, I play guitar and banjo in a bluegrass band. I bought a microphone the other and am working on recording some stuff.

Bass Guitar is my main instrument. I could play some guitar and I know some chords. I can keep hold a steady beat on drums and once in awhile make a nice fill-in. But bass is the only instrument I can perform with or play in a band with. But someone once told me that learning other instruments will help my bass guitar skills, so I learn what I can from the other instrumentalists in my band.

neet
All i need is a left hand viper so I can play metal and FUNK

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Is that all it takes to be able to play? [Wink]

I play the piano. Now, to convince my parents to buy me a grand one...

Posted by genius00345 (Member # 8206) on :

I play clarinet and guitar mainly.

I've dabbled a bit on piano, played recorder a long time ago, and could probably play a bass if I tried. I know how the other instruments work, so I could learn sax pretty quick. Brass would take longer to learn proper embrouchure (sp?) techniques.

And, everyone is a percussionist. Ever clapped your hands? [Smile]

Posted by Jeesh (Member # 9163) on :

I can bang some keys on the piano and make it seem like music. Does anyone sing? I was just in a contest and took first [Big Grin]

Porter's mom always jokes to people after we've played some music that that is the instrument that she plays. ^_^

Saxophone is my main instrument.

But I also play a little guitar, violin, harmonica, and bagpipes.

It's a work in progress.

I realize you're kidding, but can you clap one hand in eighth notes, the other on every other beat, tap one foot on the opposite beat and the other foot on every 4th measure?

That's what a good percussionist can do just to lay down a basic beat.

Recorder, violin and clarinet.

I play(ed)clarinet.

For Velentine's Day, mu husband had my clarinet fixed. (The pads had been eaten by little bugs) (ew)

When I try to play, I almost pass out. It makes me realize what good shape I was in as a youth.

My daughter plays trombone and my son plays guitar.

I played bassoon in school. No, really!

I play all other instruments...badly.

pH, I think I love you. [Kiss]

Let's see... I play: flute, piccolo, piano, recorder, tin whistle, percussion(specializing in marimba and vibraphone), jaw harp, and I sing sometimes too. My sister played piano, marimba, and clarinet. My dad played trumpet. My mom was a drummer. We're just an all-around musical family, I guess.

Am I the only oboist here? [Wave]

I also play piano, bassoon, bass, guitar (a little...), and saxophone; although the sax was mostly because my band instructor needed a saxophonist who would actually show up and it's pretty similar to the oboe.

Don't know if I could anymore, it's been more than fifteen years.

Guitar, trombone, a little fiddle, slide whistle (except that even my "professional quality" slide whistle isn't good enough, I need to design a good slide whistle) Harmonica, some bass, and some ukulele.

I tried it. It took me three tries to get it right, but, yeah, I can!

Can I be a professional hand-clapper?

I play Bassoon. I played in military bands for almost 20 years (Air Force, and Army National Guard.) I paid for several years of college with the sax. At one time I owned, and played around with aprox. 30 instruments, mostly wind and key board. But, now there isn't anyone in my little town to play with. I play in a University Alumni band once a year and that's about it.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Back when I was seriously studying music at the university, I was told that playing in a military band was and excellent way to go -- you get paid for several years to basically practice your instrument and improve your craft.

They occasionally do on Country stations (which I don't listen to).

Posted by Artemisia Tridentata (Member # 8746) on :

The quailty of Military bands has been uneven. When I joined the AF Band in 69, many of the best musicians in the world were in the bands. (We were all dodging the draft, what can I say.) But, when the war ended, the quality of the bands took a big dip. By 74, I was playing in the 23rd Army Band. (Utah National Guard) It was awsome. But, there were other reserve bands that were just plain sloppy. There are far fewer bands now. And, the ones I have heard in the last 10 years have been very professional. The 23rd Army band is still awsome! If I had more hair and less rest of me, I would lie about my age just to play with them again.

AND Mr. Portorero Head, don't you listen to Public Radio? What are you, some kind of Republican? They often have bluegrass banjo on A Prairie Home Companion.

Posted by Tatiana (Member # 6776) on :

I play guitar and piano and sing, but none of it very well. [Smile] My dad was the real musician in the family. I just play for fun. I love to play, though, and especially to listen to other people playing. Live music is just fun, particularly live participatory music. [Smile]

When I saw the topic "instruments" though, I was thinking of instrumentation and control systems for industrial processes. [Big Grin] So I should mention that I play the pressure transmitter, the flow meter, and the thermocouple extremely well. [Wink]

B) I do listen to NPR
C) I do listen to Praire Home Companion
D) I don't consider NPR general "radio" -- I consider it "NPR"

Tante, here are a few sites. Also, CMT has a wonderful video program that is more American. I cannot remember the name of the program, but there are great bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, Buddy Miller, and others. More Americana/Alt country than country.

Oh, I listen to banjo bluegrass on the internet. I've got Pandora set to my favorite "Dueling Banjos" station right now! But mostly I listen to the radio when I am driving in my Shvestermobile, which is fully loaded with both AM and FM! (It also has power everything, if by "everything" you mean steering and brakes.) But there are no banjo stations broadcasting (that I can find) in the middle of New Jersey.

Have you heard of Railroad Earth?

They are not really bluegrass, but bluegrass-based, I guess.Bluegrass-rock?

Also, the Duhks

Posted by BandoCommando (Member # 7746) on :

Hm...I'm a band director, hence the screen name, so no, I don't play any instruments.

Actually, I consider it shameful if there is an instrument in my band that I CAN'T play - and right now, that list includes oboe, bassoon, tuba, and to a lesser extent, horn.

However, I'm reasonably competent on trombone and clarinet, good at percussion and trumpet, and can play the trumpet pretty darn well, if I may say so. But my primary instrument is the flute. Why? Because it rhymes with woot! of course.

(Nevermind that woot didn't exist as a word until well after I started to play the flute.)

Posted by Artemisia Tridentata (Member # 8746) on :

Bando, with a good student bassoon, a soft reed and a long weekend I (or you) could fix the bassoon part of your list. It dosen't take the physical prowess that the oboe or tuba take. The problem is most music teachers take the double reed pedegogy class with no one to find them a good soft reed. So, they are scared of it. It's just a conical whistle, so it overblows at an octive and a fifth just like a clarinet does. It has an older fingering system (pre-bohem) so there are a few forks in the higher regester. But, its really close to the same.

MORE for Bando
When I left the Air Force Band, the guy they had hired (recruited) to take my place couldn't even put a bassoon together. He was a fine jazz sax guy. (And the war was all but over.) That was why they wanted him. I put the thing together for him, and gave him a 45 minute lesson. He went in and passed the audition.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

When you join the Air Force Band, how many instruments do you have to audition with?

Posted by Artemisia Tridentata (Member # 8746) on :

It depends on the opening. Bassoon and oboe usually stand alone because they are harder to find. Clarinet might be tested on Sax too. And If you can play in several styles of group, ie rock (guitar)or country it is surely a plus. I'm not sure about brass. But, everyone had to have an instrument that they could play for a marching band. The oboe guy got by with a pair of cymbals. I played sax on the march. But, I didn't want to play in a big band and have to work in the afternoon. So, I generally left off the sharps and flats whenever anyone was listening to my sax. It didn't work. I ended up as the libriarian and had to work afternoons anyway.

Posted by BandoCommando (Member # 7746) on :

Getting a SOUND on bassoon isn't the problem. I get a great sound and play well in tune with good vibrato. It's that, well, I'm NOT all thumbs, which is what you have to be to play bassoon, apparently. There are, what, six keys for the left hand thumb, and four for the right? Crazy.

In other words, I just need more practice at the bassoon, particularly as it relates to fingerings, learning scales, etc. In truth, the bassoon should have gone onto my "reasonably competent" list. Oboe might join it, if I had a better beginner reed, since the fingerings are so similar to my primary.

Posted by Jeesh (Member # 9163) on :

Yeah, the only instruments (besides what I play now) that I plan to learn are the clarinet, percussion, and maybe oboe.
