(I probably spelt it wrong)

Do you guys think the movie was funny? I did. Many of my friends have seen it and they have said anything from "Sucked" to "Freaking Hilarious" I was wondering what you guys thought? I'm kinda of wondering why people thought it sucked though.

Hmm
I sort of liked it and disliked it at the same time.
It had a LLAMA in it! Llamas are sooooooooo cute... And he was all like, "Eat your dinner, Tina." and that was funny.
And his dancing was good...
And there were other things that were good... But it was sort of...
Perhaps I'll watch it again.

You either love it or hate it. We loved it. [Smile]

We inflicted it on my Mom. She *so* didn't get it. Her first response was, "That was some of the worst acting I have ever seen."

Llamas are awesome! [Cool]

We disliked it the first time we saw it (in the theater and didn't know anything about it except that it was "hilarious". We were totally not prepared for what kind of movie it was).

Then my nephew got it for Christmas and we listened to it/watched it many times over the holiday. It became funny the instant we stopped taking it so seriously and just enjoyed it.

It had funny parts to it (I love when they order the time machine from the internet...that killed me) but mostly I was bored with it. It's a funnier movie in retrospect than it was during viewing.

Loved it!

It was not well acted, written, or made. It is not a great movie.

And yet, there is no movie in the world I love more.

I also really liked it, not on the first viewing but on the second.

My feelings, too. And I am completely not motivated to see it again.

For Christmas my family got The Pretender DVDs. I immediately fell in love with poor, brilliant, geeky, unrespected Broots. Can you imagine my shock and horror when I found out that he was Uncle Rico?
I still haven't forgiven him.

We hated it.

But now, for The Pretender... We got the second season - the rest aren't available here yet. Go figure. We'll be getting the rest as soon as they become available... Love Jarod. [Big Grin]

Having lived in SE Idaho, I liked it in ways that a lot of people just wouldn't get, and my children loved it. We actually knew some of the extras (most notably the farmer who shoots the cow in view of the school bus).

I really have no desire to see it again though. My SweetBaboo refused to see it, because he thought it looked "painful". He's never been to Idaho though, so he wouldn't get a lot of what we liked about it.

*excited squeal*
The third season's pretty.. different so far. We've only been allowed to watch the first two disks, ten episodes or so.. The last one had Jarod narrating. Q.o?
But there was plenty of Broots action in the fourth episode, I believe it was. I've only watched it six times in the past week. [Big Grin]
I hope they come out soon by you!

I wasn't a big fan of Napoleon Dynamite, which is weird because I usually find joy in the stupid.

Posted by Lord Solar Macharius (Member # 7775) on :

Terrible. A couple good moments don't make up for the vast stretches of nothing. If that's your thing, good for you. I'd rather be sodomised by an elephant than have to endure Napoleon Dynamite again.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

I think you're being overly dramatic.

Posted by Lord Solar Macharius (Member # 7775) on :

Ahh, you got me. I would have got away with that too, if it weren't for you and your meddling dog.

Posted by 0range7Penguin (Member # 7337) on :

it was pretty sucky though. it was so dumb as to be practically insulting. it did have its moments though.

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

The first half of the movie could be used as a torture device but the second half had some good moments.

That movie sucked. And bored me to tears.

I actually tried to avoid this movie when it first came out because of my complete lack of interest in it, but after hearing over and over about how great it was, my curiosity finally got the best of me.

The movie did have its funny moments. I chuckled at parts and laughed out loud at others, but overall I feel it was terribly overrated. I also think that my opinion of it would probably be a little better if I didn't have to listen to everyone around me constantly quoting lines from it.

It's an eminently quotable film. It's similar, as a phenomenon, to THe Big Lebowski (which I personally find to be much better, AND eminently quotable).

That's a good comparison, Bok. I personally much prefer NP, but to each his own.

I guess you had to be there. Oh, Wait! I was there. I taught in Southern Idaho. I didn't like the movie. Why spend that much time with that empty a shell? I didn't like teaching in Southern Idaho eather.

I place it the category of "if you lower your expectations and don't take it seriously then it is kind of good".

I find myself putting most movies in this category of late.

Posted by pH (Member # 1350) on :

I don't have very high expectations of movies to begin with. I mean, I liked Aeon Flux. I LIKE "bad" movies.

But Napolean Dynamite sucked even by my standards.

Well I thought it was hilarious. No high expectations of it, just thought it was really, over-the-top funny. I'd watch it again too.

See, I thought ND was a really sad movie about people who are unhappy, lost in the world, and utterly incapable of making their lives better. It had funny moments, but I finished the movie feeling sad for all the characters. At least the people in the The Big Lebowski seem Ok with where they are in life, miserable as it may seem to me.

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

mph, yeah. I liked ND, just not as much (it was a bit overhyped to me). They are both movies whose viewing pleasure can be crushed simply by the audience you watch it with.

I still haven't forgiven him.

[Eek!]

That's painful.

I watched it and thought it was enjoyable. Some fun parts and one liners that you just wouldn't expect to hear from people.

Unfortunately, it's not a widely accessible movie as you can see from the variety of responses to this thread.

I got a message from it, but I'm still trying to put it into words.

This thread title bothers me. The word is spelled "dynomite."

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Actually, the title is "Napoleon Dynamite."

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

You're right. Damn. I'm usually an excellent speller. Dynamite it is.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Now, there is no need for naughty words.

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Isn't the word "naughty," in and of itself, a naughty word?

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Not if you spell it knotty.

I just assumed it was a reference to some sort of jurassic arachnids.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

Actually, I thought of dinosaurs everytime I saw the thread title as well. I just didn't have the spider thoughts crossing my mind.

I loved this movie. I was amazed when I was looking at urban legends for a school project and found that the state of Idaho actually passed a state resolution commending the film and the creators for its references to important features of Idaho. Check it out at http://www3.state.id.us/oasis/2005/HCR029.html

the movie had its moments, but overall it's a mediocre(sp?) movie at best.

This is one of those American Pronunciation Moments, isn't it?

I mean, by that logic, those two words sound just like Noddy, too.

Awful film. Inspiring not only hatred, but also revulsion.

Posted by Audeo (Member # 5130) on :

I've probably said it before, but Napoleon Dynamite was therapeutic in helping me come to terms with my hatred of Idaho. Everytime they showed the sweeping wheat fields, and dirt roads the thought recurred "I hate Idaho." I kept waiting for something to happen. Something funny, something sad, something interesting, but nothing ever did. In that respect the movie reflects Idaho. It wasn't necessarily offensive, it just simply wasn't anything else.
