Does anyone have any idea when the PC release date for this game is. It's been pushed back several times and I was just wondering if any of you have any "inside info". I went to buy it over the weekend and it was STILL not out. so I picked up "Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Game of the Year Edition). I'd played it before on Xbox and I loved it. The PC version is SOOOOO much better. I literally cannot wait till I can own Oblivion.

Watch out; you could end up like this guy.

It's March 21st, isn't it?

Posted by Ramdac99 (Member # 7264) on :

OK sweet, thanks Noemon.

I'm not positive that I'm right (don't have a computer capable of playing it, and don't have an XBox 360, so I haven't been paying as much attention as I otherwise would be), but I *think* that's what I've heard.

Amazon and another retail software company both list it as March 20th. My husband wants to draw up a detailed schedule of playing time. I am sending him that link!

Does Ethan remind anyone else of Mewn from Funny Farm?

Oblivion is shipped March 20th, and will end up in stores however long it takes after that to arrive by freight. [Smile]

No prob. [Smile] I've been tracking Oblivion at my site for a long time.

Yep, they just announced it went to gold master disc a while back.

I've got a $5 pre-order deposit at my local EB store.

We should have a thread with pictures of our first Oblivion characters! [Wink]

XBox 360 will only set you back the price of a decent graphics card, kwsni. Not that that's cheap, but it's less than a new computer would be.

::shrug:: Stryker is self-destructing anyway, and I just can't wrap my brain around console gaming. It's the controller, I think.

Plus, I've alreayd got a new name for my computer all picked out. Jayne. ::grin::

I don't recognize the reference. I started reading the comic, though, because the obsessiveness of Ethan reminded me of my husband. The husband has calmed down a bit, though, while Ethan seems to have gone off the deep end. [Big Grin]

There are a variety of midrange cards that will get you far for about $150 instead of uber ridiculous $600 Radeon XTX 1900XXXXXXXX

Sure, but how well will they perform when running Oblivion? A coworker of mine who writes hardware reviews (and who, the lucky SOB, always has the most current computer equipment at no cost to himself) reports that at Oblivion's highest detail levels even the fastest commercially available hardware has difficulty keeping up.

My computer's called "Calvinball", by the way. [Smile]

Hah Calvinball, I need to get my watterson books out again.

Yeah I think trying to run that would melt my 5200, always a good reason to upgrade.

I need to get Oblivion just to make sure Bathesda sticks to the Fallout 3 project. The world has been to long without the gentle pitter patter of super mutants going to battle.

Megan, Mewn is a cat in another comic with a videogame obsession. He's not as bad as Ethan, though. There's more of a plot with FF than with CAD, too. I like them both. [Smile]

He has a Transformers addiction, too. Maybe I'm more of a Mewn.

I absorbed about 80% of the western half of Morrowind.

Had serious burn out and a feeling of hopelessness as I realized I still had several miles of landmass to cover on the eastern half of morrowind.

My sister on the other hand, plays every once in a while, but over a year has surpassed my character in every aspect and has kept her sanity because she only plays it once every week or two. [Wink]

Learn well from thine older siblings.

Posted by Jhai (Member # 5633) on :

I let all of my O/C tendencies out on Morrowind - I'm slowly completing all the missions while covering all of the land, and stealing everything everywhere that has a 10-to-1 ratio of price to weight (excepting potion ingredients - they need to be 50-to-1 or better). And yes, that includes both expansion packs.

I also used a couple of cheat codes - but just to let me into all three houses so I could complete all of those quests as well.

I collect all the pretty swords and rings and such, along with a copy of every book, and keep them neatly ordered in my house in Balmora. While my room in real life looks like it exploded... [Big Grin]

gah! i saw this thread and had to post. This game is going to be amazing (though i hope to buy the over priced halo box). Just seeing the trailers and magazine articles, hot damn is that going to be an amazing game. I definitly hope that the 360 is cheaper by than, i really dont feel like buying one just for Morrowind and Halo, but if i must i must. Who here has played the other morrowinds?

I just finished reading the new Nvidia 7900 preview over at HardOCP.com and I'm seriously considering getting one of those when I finally DO upgrade. Looks like there are going to be some very good prices when those are released.

Postman, Morrowind was the last one. This one is Oblivion. The name of the series is The Elder Scrolls.

I'd really like to get my hands on Daggerfall, I downloaded Arena when they had it up on the site, but couldn't make it work.

I ended up accumulating so much stuff that I made all of Balmora into my domain.

Then the stupid overflow bag came and ate my book collection. [Frown]

My little brother stole all the pillows in Balmora and then levitated above the city, dropping them all on top of each other. It was pretty cool seeing a stack of pillows 20 stories high. [Big Grin]

Wow, how many people here have taken a look at the new video they have up at www.elderscrolls.com ?

I can see why people complained about the lack of detail far away, but technology isn't yet able to render the amount of detail they're rendering...all the way out to the HORIZON. Frankly being able to see 10 miles is wonderful all the same.

I am so excited for this game. Are they going to have the same character races available to create, as in Morrowind? And does anyone know if you can run with your mount, since I have only seen videos with walking mounts so far?

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

Same races, as far as I know. And I believe I read that mounts have a walk and run speed on the PC, X360 I think it's based on the analog control pressure.

From what I've seen, I wish the horses weren't quite so...round. Horses have angles! These look a little like they designed them from slightly out-of-focus pictures. And if the gaits are wrong I'm going to have a REAL problem.

But then I'll get over it and play the game into the ground.

3 more days until this game comes out.
3 MORE DAYS!

I so cannot wait for this game. I'm a Morrowind addict (although I still haven't played through a quarter of it). I've preordered the collectors edition of Oblivion, so I should be getting it on Monday. Can't wait can't wait can't wait...

Posted by A Rat Named Dog (Member # 699) on :

You can play as all the standard Tamriel races, but the double-jointed legs you saw on the Khajit and Argonians in Morrowind have been replaced by standard human legs. They could pull off a lot more animations that way, so as much as I liked watching my Argonian skip across the water with his weird little gait, in the end, it's probably worth it.

Posted by Marlozhan (Member # 2422) on :

Does that mean if I preorder it on the internet now, I will receive it on Monday? Or would it likely be after Monday?

Posted by Marlozhan (Member # 2422) on :

It comes out tomorrow, and I will be playing it with my pre-ordered copy!

Anyone have it yet and have any reviews of the game?

Posted by kwsni (Member # 1831) on :

Geoff, I really doubt even that would spoil the game for me. I'm still finding things in Morrowind that I haven't done.

I just got back from Best Buy, and they had about 30 copies of it there. I was tempted to buy it, but I didn't have $49.99. Dang. I'll be saving my cash.

Posted by ricree101 (Member # 7749) on :

So, has anyone had a chance to really play through this yet? I'm especially interested in seeing how it does on slightly outdated systems.

Posted by Earendil18 (Member # 3180) on :

I have it, it's very good and comfortably similar to Morrowind in all the good aspects. [Wink]

It looks good for about 2 feet in front of me and then goes downhill from there, but with a 9600 (the 2nd to minimum ati chipset) I can run it at medium textures, full grass and tree LOD, distant land, high water quality, bloom turned on, at 800x600, and it's only "kinda" chuggy.

My brother is spending 2k, to get a dual 7900GTX SLI configuration (the best possible at this point in time on the market), dual core processor, 2 GIGS of friggin' RAM, and basically a whole new system.

I'm hoping for visitation rights. [Hail]

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Am I wrong in thinking that the driver that will allow Oblivion to get use out of both of the 7900GTX SLI cards isn't yet available?

I'm sorely tempted, purely based upon screen shots, to try this out.

I think you're wrong. I'm fairly sure Oblivion -- like most modern games -- can take advantage of dual video cards.

I didn't think SLI which was Nvidia's baby would be dependent on the Oblivion program itself, if all they're doing is rendering half the screen and syncing it in tandem for faster render times.

Either way, I'm going to try and convince my brother that it might be cheaper if he waits until the new G80 gpu's get rolled out in June.

A single 9700GTX is plenty of power for this game.

My Oblivion story so far.

I've put in about 15 hours and I am loving it. For anyone even considering buying this I highly recommend it. Even if you're not into RPGs I would get this. Of my five roommates, three of them have never been interested in video games and have gone so far as to say they hate them. Two of those three were so impressed while watching me that they've started their own games and love it and the other one loves watching us play.

Since I've only played 15 or so hours I can't give an in-depth review, but I’ll give my impressions. The first thing that stands out is obviously the graphics and sound. The voices are done really well. Besides Patrick Stewart I’ve recognized Sean Bean's (Boromir) voice and others that I couldn't put a name to. Oblivion looks better then any other game I've seen, and this is on a standard TV. I imagine that on an HDTV or computer that it would look a lot better. This is the first game I've ever played that I've stopped for a minute just to watch the sunrise in the game. It's that good. Of course most reading this already know how good the graphics are so I'll move on to game play.

The game play improves over Morrowind in almost every way. The fighting is much improved, but not perfect. Instead of just standing their like in Morrowind you have to actually move and block. Also, the ability to cast magic while wielding a weapon makes things so, so, so much better. It still feels like something is lacking, I don't know exactly what, but at least I'm not bored with it yet. The thieves skills are also much improved. Sneaking around trying not to get caught stealing is my favorite part of the game so far. Also stealth kills are the best way to go.

Traveling is better. I rarely use the fast travel. For those who like to go cross country like me but don't fancy walking for 20 minutes just to get to a certain city, there are horses to speed it up.

Other improvements are the organization of quests, inventory and maps. I thought that it might be a problem on a console, but I was wrong. No more Cliff Racers, at least not that I've seen.

Other things might come to mind later. As I’ve said earlier, this game improves over Morrowind in so many ways and I love Morrowind. If anyone is unsure about getting this, I would highly recommend it.

Just dropping by to say I'm addicted to this game. My work, sleep, and relationships are all suffering. I logged twenty hours just this weekend. I emailed my savegames to myself so I could play from my parents' house.

I'm also running an unsupported video card (using Oldblivion), an ATI Radeon 9200, and it still looks amazing. I'm upgrading video cards as we speak, but for now it runs fine. It did require some tuning of the shaders and texture and tree size and anti-aliasing and bunch of other stuff, but it works.

Bump to share my roommate's extremely excellent experience:

So we discovered two things:

1) People who like you enough will assist you in combat.

2) Enemies will pursue you across zone lines.

So my roommate tried an experiment. He went to Chorrol and shot a guard - then zoned into the Fighter's Guild.

We watched as the Fighter's Guild SLAUGHTERED the guards. It was epic.

He wandered back outside and the remaining guards attacked; the guild members wandering outside immediately lept into the fray (including Earana, for some unknown reason, who started summoning daedra). Soon enough, Chorrol was depopulated of guards.

We went to try this in another city, but the game froze fast travelling. Apparently it's tough to process the guards getting THAT angry at you. ^_^

Posted by Hamson (Member # 7808) on :

Lol. Nice experiment erosomniac.

Grrr... During one of my Thieves Guild quests, I was supposed to steal a ring from a countess, but when I went there, she had two of the same rings, so I took them both. But apparantly, now the person I need to talk to doesn't recognize that I have ANY rings, and I can't remove one from my inventory because it won't let you remove quest items. So basically, I'm stuck and not able to complete anymore Thieves Guild quests until I either revert to an earlier game (which is 4 levels back) or wait for them to fix it. You'd think if they can come out with new content so quickly, they would at least fix the most major common bugs. I've heard this happening to quite a few people, so my advice is make as many save files as you need to! I myself keep 10 going at once, but even that didn't save me, and now I have to go back to one of my periodic 100th saved games.

C'mon.... patch.

Hamson, are you playing it on the PC or xbox? If it's the PC you can use a console code removeitem <itemnumber> <qty>.

If it's the xbox, then I don't know.

-------------------------

I personally have been having a lot of fun with enchanting stuff. My Bow of Explosive Whup-ass, which does 25 Fire damage, 23 Shock damage, and 100% weakness to fire, is powerful enough to launch anything smaller than a mountain lion into the air with one shot.

I shot a running deer and it exploded ten feet in the air and landed on the other side of a boulder.

I've also been leading Ogre's from Ayleid ruins on chases to city gates, and letting the guards fight them for my amusement.

Posted by Marlozhan (Member # 2422) on :

Vasslia, your FX5200 won't be able to play the game. The FX series has some serious issues, so unless you want the graphics to look worse than Morrowind, upgrade your video card. I had an FX5500 when I bought the game, and not only did it look bad, but it had about 2 frames per second.

I got online and read about a ton of other users with FX series cards that had the same problem. There are some fixes you may find on elderscrolls forums, but they are minimal fixes at best (unless someone has come up with some in the last few weeks that I haven't checked). The FX series was listed as a supported card by Bethesda, but they may have recanted that by now, I don't know. The pixel shaders on the FX cards just can't handle Oblivion.

I upgraded to the Geforce 7800gs and the game runs as well as anyone else I have heard from (you don't have to buy one that nice, though, to get good performance. If you want to save money the 6000series also runs well. I don't know much about ATI cards for this game).

BTW, my specs are: 1gig ram and 3.4ghz Celeron D processor.

The paintbrush trick is also fun. If you didn't notice yet, paintbrushes have no physics in the game: gravity and external forces do not affect them. They do not move when you bump into them/hit them/whatever short of you actually picking them up. You can use this to build yourself some steps to some VERY odd places...
