This thread is for Belle, cuz she asked. [Big Grin]

Just so you are all aware, we have a hatrack group over at yahoo.com for the Men's 2006 tournament. Here's the group Jeni set up:

http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com/men
Group: Jatraqueros
Password: hatrack
Group ID: 58371

We've got a decent sized group of folks, about ten or so, but we're always looking for more.

If this is your first time, you picked a good year, because anyone's guess is pretty much as good as anyone elses at this point - the bracket's kind of crazy, in my humble opinion.

So, check out some sports sites, read some game previews, and make your selections! Only a day or so more before selections are locked and final!

And just to let everyone know - I really suck at these, so you're guaranteed a non-last place finish [Big Grin]

Posted by Tresopax (Member # 1063) on :

Also, I am planning on winning, so you're also more or less guaranteed a non-first place finish. (Note the use of "more or less" in case I need to adjust the meaning of this statement in a few weeks.) [Wink]

Seriously folks, join now - ESPECIALLY if you don't know anything about basketball. Since it is mostly guessing anyway, you have a good chance of doing well. If you lose then you can always say you know nothing about basketball. And if you win you can hold it over those of us who follow this stuff.

There's only one big rule:
#1 seeds are the most favored teams. #2 seeds are slightly less favored. #3 slightly less than them, and so on. #16 seeds are the least favored. Pick #1 seeds to win much more often than #16 seeds, unless you just want to see gigantic upsets. (No #16 has EVER beaten a #1 seed.)

Now you have no excuse not to join.

I'm an idiot. I'm not at all happy with my bracket, but I hate to second guess myself.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

Oh, and I think in every year of the tournament at least one #12 seed has beaten a #5 seed.

Otherwise, I think I like ESPN's mascot method (can't find a link). Basically, it breaks down like this, with the upper mascot always beating the lower.

Supernatural or underworld being
Human with gun
Human with non-gun weapon
Ferocious Animal
Human with no weapon
Nonferocious animal
Inanimate object
Plant

In ties, dog mascots beat cat mascots. Cat mascots beat bird mascots. The scarier dog will beat the less scary dog, and the same for cats and birds. Plants never win.

Hope that helps. [Smile]

A Few Tips:

12 over 5 is always the best "upset" bet. There's one every year.
Except for one #4 seed, 1,2,3 (overwhelmingly 1s) have won.
The only time a 16 beat a 1 was in the women's tournament.
Only once has anything under a 4 seed gotten to the finals (or final 4?) and it was #8

Do these statistic ever stop me from betting that some podunk #16 will take it all? No, no they don't. Last year I had Old Dominion going all the way because I liked the name.

Our mascot is the Maroon. I have no idea how that figures into your system FlyingCow, but as our only Div 1 sport is quizbowl, I don't think it's much of a concern [Cool]

Just for those that think you shouldn't bother if you don't know basketball - we held a bracket challenge at my workplace years back and the people who won were not those that spent hours reading online notes about each time and agonizing over each and every pick. It was two girls who never watched basketball and picked teams based on whether or not they had ever heard of them. Seriously, they would pick North Carolina over Hofstra because they'd never heard of Hofstra.

That's a pretty good strategy in the NCAA tournament, incidentally.

Thanks for the thread, Flying Cow. [Smile]

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

I'm regularly beaten in the tournament by my buddies' girlfriends, who pick based on which mascot is the cutest or on coinflips.

Thinking too much is a bad idea, which is why this year I went stream-of-consciousness.

Posted by Kristen (Member # 9200) on :

I'm such a girl about my picks, I admit. It's all about names, funny mascots, and hot basketball players. Oh, and I'm originally from CT so blind state pride (since we don't have any other sports team) usually dictates the rest.

But I did pick the Elite 8, Final Four, Finals, and winner at one point so who knows (and yes, that was the year that CT won).

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

A woman I worked with consistently scored in the upper half of the people participating... by letter her dog choose. She would repeatedly put two bowls of identical food on the floor, with a name taped to each. Whatever bowl the dog picked, that would be the winner.

Can I ask a really stupid question? In terms of this tournament, what does seed mean? Why do they use the word seed in basketball? It seems weird to me. I get that it seems to be some sort of rating.

Posted by Architraz Warden (Member # 4285) on :

Seeds are rough rankings within each division. The No. 1 seed is the top ranked team in their division, while No. 16 seed should be thankful they made it at all.

The advantage is that in the first round, all the No. 1 seeded teams play the No. 16 seeded teams, meaning it should be as easy a game as possible, and the highest chance to advance to the next round.

Posted by Vamp96 (Member # 9030) on :

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

Well, I don't know if the mascot rule will hold true. Wichita State's mascot (wheat) is whuppin' on Seton Hall's mascot (a pirate).

Hey, you guys hear they are evacuting one of the arenas in California due to a bomb scare? Alabama and Marquette are set to tip off in less than an hour and they can't even get into the arena.

Of course, they need to check everything out, but it's going to be really funny if someone just left a backpack behind in a locker room.

The thing of it is that when I watch the games, I don't even consider my bracket. And as it turns out, I actively cheer against my bracket. Come on - who else really wanted Winthrop to beat Tennessee? And who wasn't cheering for Montana?

I love March basketball.

My philosophy teacher cancelled our Ancient class tomorrow because our school's team is playing tomorrow at 12:25 et.

I might watch just as thanks for having a day off from Aristotle.

That's awesome. I remember skipping class in high school to go to the library, where, of all places, there was a big-screen TV. The library would pretty much shut down while we were in there - and by "we," I mean "whoever was able to con a teacher into letting that person out." [Big Grin]

Good times...

Yeah, I do that, too. For me, it's not a gigantic conflict. I have no problem rooting for a team, particularly the underdog, even though I chose differently on the bracket. Seriously, a few games won't make a difference.

In short, I usually pick to be correct, but I cheer for whoever I want. [Smile]

I've lost three games so far, but none of them are a bracket killer - all teams that I hadn't chosen to win more than one game.

I totally picked Montana to whup on Nevada.

Though I must admit I was rooting for Winthrop, but I had Tenn going out in the second round anyway.

Man. Big East letting me down big time.

Then again, Cuse was playing without McNamara, for all intents and purposes.

But still.

Marquette should have won, if it weren't for Felix. Cuse should have won, except for a groin injury. Seton Hall? Well, yeah, I had no hopes for them in the tourney.

Here's holding out hope for G'town and WVU runs, and UConn and Nova pushes to the Final Four.

Posted by Tstorm (Member # 1871) on :

I'm glad Gonzaga managed to pull out the win. Darn them for scaring me.

I did pick Texas A&M over Syracuse, for a couple reasons. First, I'll pick the Big 12 when in doubt. Second, ah, never cared much for orange. [Wink]

I'm not even going to discuss the Minneapolis bracket, though. [Smile]

I notice this post was before both Winthrop and SDSU both went down on three-pointers with less than 20 seconds to play. Those were some painful games to watch.

So yeah, go Texas A&M and 'Bama! Fix my brackets for me...by busting everyone elses up just as bad!

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

11-5 on day one. Not real good, but not a total train wreck, as most of the losses I had going on more round.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

I didn't realize how bad McNamara's groin injury was, or I wouldn't have picked them to go to the 16 over LSU. With a healthy G-Mac, I think they would have had the opportunity to lose to Duke.

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

I picked them to lose in the next round, but I can't say I'm surprised. I watched McNamara struggle through the tourney (from a physical standpoint; he still played great) and I knew how athletic TAMU was. But I just couldn't pull the trigger.

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

Aside from picking the SEC I did terrible in the first half of the first round.

On a brighter note all my losses were teams I had losing in the next round anyway.

I wish I'd picked TAMU. I really really wanted to but I couldn't make myself.

It's usually safe to bet against the Big Least since they're the most overrated conf since the Pac-10.

Pix

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

I did okay, 12-4 - I did pick every SEC team correctly, for once my bias toward southern teams paid off. The only one I picked that I had going on another round was Syracuse, and I only had them winning one more game. We'll see what today brings.

Posted by Kristen (Member # 9200) on :

I cannot wait to go to Vegas today, for a lot of reasons (duh), but the March Madness is going to to awesome to watch on all the screens, with people all over the country getting to hear me rant about how awesome UCONN is and the Big East Tournament was just a fluke, that's all.

Will I bet on anything? *glances at woeful bracket* Most likely not. If UCONN wins, I'll just bask in the glow of state superiority and be content with that.

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

A 16 seed has never beaten a 1 seed in the men's side of the tourney (and it's only happened once in the women's side. ha ha stanford)

A UCONN victory is all but certain.

15s beat 2s pretty regularly. but not 16s beating 1s.

And it'll never ever ever happen. Never. Not in a million years.

Sigh. And Arkansas blows it.

There goes my entire Oakland region.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

So much for Wisconsin. That was one of the worst games I've seen them play in ages. Good thing I have Villanova beating whichever team won that game. [Smile]

And Northwestern State University of Louisiana (at least I think that's the name) - AWESOME! I just love the buzzer-beating shots, particularly when they occur against another Big Ten team. Go them!

YAY FOR MY SCHOOL!

I was in the campus gym working out during the game. All the employees were gathered around the tv on the cardio side of the room. I was lifting some weights when I heard just SCREAMING. It was intense. I wasn't expecting that! And I'm superstitious so I'm gonna have to go to the gym for every game.

My dad called me all excited. What will be interesting is if they play LSU at some point. They're seeded below the team NSU beat today so that could be fun. My brother just got accepted to LSU for the fall so I can just imagine my poor parents having to take sides.

Its kinda funny cause I don't even like my school. I take all my classes through the independent liberal arts college. But I'm competitive so if we have to suck at football, atleast we're not bad at basketball.

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

FC: I jinxed the Hogs =( Since moving to CA anytime I watch them they're almost certain to lose. (And they're MY team dammit!!!) I was sitting at work refreshing the score every now and then... It wasn't much, but it was enough for the jinx *weep*

(At least this saves us the shame of getting destroyed by Memphis. I *hate* losing to Memphis and we have problems with them even when we're good and they suck.)

I am flattered by your faith in my team =)

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

They looked really good on paper. And they looked great during the game... too bad Bucknell had 55% from behind the arc, and Arkansas had basically 55% from the charity stripe.

That makes a pretty huge difference. If they'd just made 4 of those missed 8 free throws...

In any event, at least the Big East did a lot better today

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

At one point Bucknell was 5-6 behind the 3pt line. Also it was a long time before either team missed a freethrow. It was a weird game to watch from the yahoo box score...

Posted by El JT de Spang (Member # 7742) on :

I was so torn.

Cheer for Uconn! They're in the Big East, it makes our strength of schedule higher next year, it helps my bracket!

Cheer for Albany! Sixteen seed! UConn are punks! It goes against every grain of my being to want UConn to win!

I cheered for Albany... too bad it didn't do much good.

Here comes KU, ready for a repeat of last year!

Way to go, Hawks!

[Grumble]

Not major damage to my bracket, as I didn't have them past Memphis anyway.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

Wow, UNC barely pulled ahead at the end there, too - and against a 14 seed that lost its best player half way through.

What's with these low seeds? I think Nova's game was the only one that was a comfortably handled win, and maybe Duke's (though they didn't make the best showing against Southern, either).

KU is one of those teams. One that causes me a lot of doubt. That little voice in the back of my head was singing loud and clear about an upset.

Too bad I didn't listen. [Smile]

Oh well, I did pick a good number correctly. George Mason, Bucknell, NC State, Texas A&M...

Now, third round is still intact so far. I haven't lost a third round team *YET*. None of my current mispicks went past the next round. We'll see how things go from here. [Smile]

yeah - the Jayhawks of KU, and the Iowa team both let me down in the first round and did major damage to my picks. Luckily, I didn't have KU picked to advance any further than the next round, so all the teams I have for semis and finals are still in the running. And so far I've got all the Washington DC side of the bracket correct.

Just disappointed in my Big 12 teams.

And I'm tied with Frisco, so I can't be doing all that badly.

Umm...yeah you can. [Razz] I'm doing pretty badly.

On the bright side, I discovered Yahoo's scenario generator, and found that if the seeds hold up for the rest of the tourney except for BC upsetting 'Nova (the health of my bracket rests on this) and North Carolina "upsetting" Tennessee, all I need is one of the following upsets to overtake El JT and win the thing:

Wichita St. over Tennessee
Texas A&M over LSU
Pitt over Memphis
Alabama over UCLA

Put simply, I'm not going to win this year. [Razz] But at least I have a couple more days of hope.

My bracket is completely wrecked, but I'm rooting for Wichita State and the other Missouri Valley small schools now. Memphis and 'Nova have got to go.

I think next year's strategery will be to AIM for the lowest possible score.

My scenario generator now tells me I'm a huge Bradley fan!

I can only win if Bradley beats Memphis, Villanova *doesn't* make the Final 4, and Duke loses to UConn in the Finals. And UConn has to score 85 points or fewer in the process of beating Duke. Or, if BC can beat 'Nova in the Elite 8, I don't need to win a tiebreaker.

Heh.

Carrie, people have good years and bad ones. I've had brackets go down with a losing percentage before (I picked more wrong that I did right). One year, after the second round, I chucked the bracket and quit watching. [Smile]

A losing streak definitely sucks.

I've also picked the underdog and won. My motivations to continue this madness? My dad usually plays, and its fun to compete with him for more wins. Also, it's kinda like exploring...what are you going to see tomorrow? Take a guess. Have fun. Pick Wichita State or Bradley or Duke. Whoever you want to cheer for or hope to win. Wait and see how the whole thing unfolds.

Sigh. WVU! Argh! Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory!

And that twit Battista blowing Gonzaga's game on three boneheaded plays down the stretch. In my opinion, they have him and only him to blame for losing.

#1 - Zags waste 35 seconds off the clock and miss a shot. Battista rebounds with 1 min left, and instead of dribbling out and wasting another 35, he puts up a quick shot that misses and allows UCLA to get the board and make 2 points.

#2 - Zags again waste 25+ seconds off the clock, and Morrison misses a shot. Battista overpursues and fouls on the rebound, stopping the clock and letting UCLA get two more points to come within one.

#3 - Zags inbound and get the ball to Battista, who, instead of dishing back to his guard behind him who was WIDE OPEN, decides to hold onto the ball, and gets it stripped. UCLA makes 2 more points and goes up by 1.

So, in the span of about a minute, this idiot makes three stupid plays that amounted to 6 UCLA points.

Ah, but it takes more than 6 points to come back from a double digit deficit.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

Totally. But that twit did a huge chunk of damage that ultimately were the 6 straws that broke the camel's back.

And that Nova/BC game! One of the worst officiated games I've seen in the tournament so far, if not the worst, on both sides of the ball. I'm happy Nova won, but no matter who won the loser would have had a case against the refs.

Madness.

That wasn't a travel. [Frown]

But more, importantly... MASON WON!!!!! Fairfax, Virginia represent! I went to Jim Larranaga's basketball camp when I was like 12. That's about as close as I get to any person who's ever been a member of the Great Eight.

UConn is once again sucking the nails out of the floorboards. Perhaps Washington is a team they won't be able to come back against?

UConn is full of great players with great talent and great egos. They don't play well together, and don't get motivated. Only luck and raw talent has saved them from hungrier teams... it may end tonight.

Did I mention George Mason is in the Elite Eight? I just want to make sure that is clear.

Boy, the elite killin's have emptied my brackets...

UConn lives to suck another day. As much as I want Big East teams to advance to boost the conference strength of schedule next year, I'd love to see George Mason finally stick it to those bozos.

Still, I think it may come down to Nova beating them in the Final Four.

Despite the fact that it will put a permanent end to my bracket, I just can't help cheering for George Mason.

Shouts out to George Mason for making the final four. Their campus is just a few miles from where I live so this past week everyone was either drunk or crazy.

I'm not drunk, so I guess that proves I'm crazy.

Well, looks like we have to give the applause to adam613 in the Hatrack winners bracket. Everyone is pretty much set and can't move any higher than where we are right now. Although Pixie picked Florida as well, but it won't be enough to catch adam.

Congrats to the top three in our pool. I'm mid-ground, but I'm happy. Still did better than I thought I would (and picked more winners than Mean Old Frisco) [Smile]

Isn't picking the winner worth 32 points?

I was under the impression that Florida winning tonight made me #1.

And since I started this tourney in last place (or near 'nough to it) That would mean I went Worst To First.

You're right, Pixie!

For some reason, I thought adam had chosen Florida to win the final as well -- but he didn't.

It's all you! Way to go!
