My internet around late night usually 11 PM seems to be dying on me, it says its connected I am sending and recieving packets but I couldnt load Hatrack, google, etc, msn would not work and neither would Teamspeak and any other internet related program wouldn't work.

This morning it happened again and it could be coincidence but I lowered the settings on my firewal and it worked again but it doesn't make sense that would randomly not work on settings it worked well on before and now coincidentally works again.

I'm downloading a newer antivirus and I'll look from there but this is frustrating me.

How familiar are you with command-line utilities? Do you know how to open a CMD window?

I've got popcorn, if anyone wants some...

--> Scott ???

--> Tom yes I know how to open command prompt and use the run utility, I haven't tried ipconfig yet but I'm unaware of what commands to use to test my ports, repair the connection etc etc.

whats up with the popcorn reference?

Okay. When the problem recurs, fire up a command line. Try to ping some common addresses. What you're looking for is not only whether the ping goes through -- especially since many big servers specifically block ping -- but whether the name you choose (like www.hatrack.com) also resolves to an IP address (like 66.223.20.195.)

The next thing to run is this command: IPCONFIG /ALL.

That will give you a list of useful addresses, including your current IP, your Internet gateway, etc. Write these down.

Try to ping the address identified as your gateway.

If you can get me this information, I can start to identify possible problems.

Oooh, I'll take butter as well. No salt though, I'm watching my sodium intake.

/isn't popcorn traditionally what you eat if you're gonna be sitting somewhere a long time?

/I eat popcorn when I'm being entertained.

Butter and salt for everyone! No microwave popcorn here, nossir! I've also got freshly grated parmesean and a couple bottles of tabasco sauce for your enjoyment, should your enjoyment slide that direction...

Blayne, you might want to go ahead and try pinging IP addresses (rather than domain names); if you get replies something is almost certainly wrong with your provider's DNS.

To ping, open up a command prompt. When the command prompt comes up, type in ping 68.142.226.44. This is one of Yahoo's public servers. It should return either 'Reply from 68.142.226.44: 8ms' or something like that.

If it returns something like 'Remote host not found,' it may indicates a local problem...

Walmart used to have tabasco popcorn. It was so good. It only lasted a week in my town. Does anyone know where I can get some more tabasco popcorn?

Hmmm...sounds like something I'll be needing to try.

I'm guessing the bagged stuff is not good, but I do remember seeing it, not sure how long it's been. Eating popcorn with hot sauce (not tabasco, ick) is something I've done quite a bit.

k im home now I'll print out what you said and I'll try it should it break again.
