I just don't think he's funny. At all. And he's obnoxious. And whenever some phrase of his is used over and over again, it makes me want to kick people in the junk.

Please tell me I'm not alone.

I think he's pretty funny. Not super funny, but I laugh at most of his jokes.

Of course, when I'm watching him, I'm not expecting "smart" humour.

I have mixed feelings about him. I think that some of his stuff is funny, while other sketches are just crude and disgusting. All of my friends love him, and so I deal with it, and laugh occassionally, but I wouldn't watch him on my own.

I thought that I was the only one! I'm on your side pH.

I have yet to laugh at a single one of his jokes. And the local bar/hangout plays D. Chappelle all the time so it's not like I accidentally caught one of his less inspired gags.

I have no idea who he is. *shrug*

Me neither. Apparently we're not missing much.

I love Chappalle, but I'm with you on the junk-kicking thing, pH.

One one hand, I have honestly laughed at some of his sketches.

On the other hand, I think he's beat the "black people are different than white people" horse to death. After watching the first two seasons of his show, I have a hard time believing that he has any thoughts on any other issues, or that he ever sees anyone as anything but the color of their skin. This is why I've long considered him the most racist person on television.

Also, I caught the end of his Inside the Actors Studio bit, and his little speech to the kids was nothing more than a string of cliches and buzzwords strung together with a couple conjunctions. Seems like when he's forced to edit the profanity out of his speech, he replaces all the curse words with tired old platitudes.

I've only seen a sketch or two, but I didn't find him remotely funny.

I don't like him either, pH. In fact, I'm currently watching "You've Got Mail" (which happens to be on TV), so I was just thinking... again... about how much I actually dislike him. Blech.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

He was fine I think in You've Got Mail.

He's a decent actor, I just can't stand HIM, as in, Dave as Dave, rather than Dave as Tom Hanks' friend in You've Got Mail.

I've heard the name before, and since I've seen YGM, I've apparently seen him. But I've never watched Chappelle's Show, and from the feedback I've gotten elsewhere and in this thread, I'm certainly not going to make an effort to do so.

Did you see Robin Hood: Men in Tights? He's in that too. I think his stand-up is pretty funny but I've never really watch his TV show.

Here

You don't even like the scene in elementary school or the basketball court? His timing and delivery are lovely. He isn't outrageously funny, but he is consistently a little bit funny.

A friend of mine described his skits as something you and your friends would talk about, but never actually do. If you never had those goofy kinds of conversations, I guess you wouldn't "get" Chapelle.

Dave Chappelles stand up is great. His comedy central show... didn't like it.

[Confused]

You're talking about scenes from that trailer? Or are you referring to something else?

I didn't find anything remotely funny in that trailer. Nothing real objectionable either, but certainly nothing at all funny.

This is sort of how I feel. Most of the skits Chappelle does are the sort of things that my friends (or even my brother) and I would joke about. So I don't mind Chappelle at all; in fact, I'm usually laughing at most of his skits.

I find Chappelle's skits a bit aimless and unfocused. They're often mildly amusing, but they're usually poorly timed and rarely as honed as they could be. He strikes me as a bit lazy, at least when it comes to sketch work.

I'm probably hearing these phrases and not recognizing them as his (the same thing used to happen to me with "Wax on, wax off," and "Yoooo can doooo eeeet").

What are these phrases of his?

Yep, I still don't know who he is. *shrug* But yeah, doesn't look like I'm missing much. Oh well. [Smile]

I love Chapelle, I think his standup is some of the funniest stuff out there.

I also really like his show. though I feel that many of his sketches are much funnier in theory than they actually end up being.

A few of Chapelle's more popular one-liners:

(from the Lil John impression)
What? Yeaaah. Okay! (said in the lil john voice)

and

"I'm Rick James, b$*%&"

and

"Darkness, Charlie Murphy...darkness"

among others

I've found quite a few of his sketches, particularly Charlie Murphy's remembrances of basketball with Prince and Rick James messin' up his couch -- to be well told, timed, and executed. There's only a few other sketches, like the John Mayer one with the "what music will make the races dance" sketch and the Racial Draft, that i like.

I think he's best when he's being absurd, like his Prince imitation.

Okay then . . . I guess I've yet to hear anybody using his phrases either. [Dont Know] I can't say I'm disappointed. [Smile]

We have a different sense of humor. There are four parts of the trailer I liked. That he used the full appellation wee Willy Wonka. 2) The woman talking about her buying a thong. 3) Chappelle telling the children that he plays to win. 4) The bastketball game for everything.

I thought it was nice light humor. I laughed the first time, and upon repeating the trailer, I chuckled.

I guess so.

I often feel out of step with mainstream humor.

I like Chappelle, but I hate all those one liners. My friend, soon to be roommate, uses them constantly.

I retaliate with Monty Python lines [Smile]

You're not alone. A lot of my friend's like his show and I don't really object to it, I'm just bored out of my mind the whole time we're watching it.

But then I like my humor mixed in with other things, it doesn't stand on it's own for me. The only Comedy Central show I'm not bored by is the Daily Show. And even there I find most of the skethes boring.

See, I like sketch comedy, and I like stand-up, and I don't really mind if it's crude humor, either.

But I just really don't find Dave Chappelle amusing. And his show is so boring to me. I really don't understand what people see in it. It's not as though I expect all the tv shows I watch to be incredibly intelligent. But I do expect them to be entertaining.
