Last night (actually early this morning) I saw the beginning of an old movie on TV. One of the actors was named "Athole" and I couldn't help wondering how his name should be pronounced.

There's a town called "Athol" in Massachusetts. When you pronounce it, it sounds like you're saying "asshole" if you've got a lisp.

Out of a personal sense of decency, I'd probably err on the side of caution and pronounce it "At-hole". That, most likely, would be the wrong way though (and not my first inclination).

There is a Mexican word, Atole. It is a hot drink made with milled corn. It is pronounced a-TOL-eh. Actually I think the Aztecas had a back of the tongue click in that I couldn't replicate with this keyboard. Something like; a-TOL-(click)eh. You might use that until you have a better idea.

There's also a town in Kansas called Athol. It's a tiny town, only featured on the news a few years ago as a poster example of declining population of rural communities.

I believe they pronounce it with a long A, as in "say" or "eight", stressing the "A".
