I'm planning on going as Gaiman's character Dream to DragonCon (big nerd convention) this year. Which means constructing the Sandman helm, which is a lot harder than you'd think.

Right now I've lent out most of my Sandman library to my friends who are also going as the Endless. If anyone can help me find a good picture of Dream's helm online, that'd be much appreciated. Also, since I'm new to this kind of thing, construction tips from anyone with some experience would be awesome.

And yes, come DragonCon, I will be sure to post pictures of all of us.

Couldn't you just use an ordinary gas-mask? Any army-navy shop or rubber fetish shop should have them.

Wrong Sandman.

Yeah . . .

Right now I'm thinking paper mache over wires, with smoked glass lenses. I'll also put in the tops of some screws for rivets. I'm trying to figure out if that's a spine hanging off the end of the mask.

Why not just dye your hair black, tease it all up 80's rocker-style, put on some skin-tight, tapered-leg black jeans, some white makeup and just roll with it?

'Cause then I just look like half the other weirdos who have crawled wretchedly out of their basement for DragonCon. I'd prefer something a bit more identifiably dream. The Helm won't be constantly worn: I'll put it on something so it can be carried. And yes, I will do the hair, the pouch, and probably a black and red kimono kind of thing.

And if it's a spine on there, I'll just raid Uncle Chiropractor's box of old plastic spines he doesn't display anymore.
