My soon-to-be-sister-in-law has issued a challenge to find a dish sporting a pattern even uglier than this one's. I'm searching, and will be cross-posting about this on Sakeriver tonight in hopes of getting the help of google-gods like Kayla, but I thought it would be worthwhile to see what people here could come up with.

So, anybody got anything?

Isn't beauty (and ugly) in the eye of the beholder?

Yuck. That is truly one ugly platter.

I don't know.... I think Benjamin Franklin would probably have liked it.......

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Capodimonte. They produce some truly awful plates, and junk.

OK, Tante wins. (with any one of hers, but especially the first one linked) <shudders>

So they say, Farmgirl. I've got to say that I agree with Laura (future sister-in-law) and Karl on this one though.

I'll have to wait until tonight to view your links, Tante--my work blocks access to Ebay. I'm looking forward to viewing them in all their hidiousness, though.

Wow, Tante, that is pretty hideous.

*laughs* That first plate you found, Tante was really, really ugly.

Do I have absyssmal taste when I say that I kind of liked Noemon's turkey plate? I could see using it.

We used to have some really hideous pfalzgraff stoneware that has supposedly become a collector's item. I don't regret getting rid of them... they were really ugly. Oh, and then there were the noname bowls my husband's first wife left with him after their divorce. I think she must have made them herself, because they were thick and heavy, with sponged green paint around the edges and a big pink (preprinted) rose emblem in the center. Really, really ugly. They didn't survive the first month of our marriage.

Tante, those are pretty bad. I thought she meant fine china at first (until I saw the link) so I searched in that arena.

birds?
Pheasant anyone?
Or turkey?
Or maybe cranes?
My favorite: the rotten pear
The dishes featured in the movie, The Birdcage, maybe?
ew!
I don't think I could eat off a plate called "The Death"
The must be a whole series of these "Birds of America" plates.
There are! And they are $100 each!
I can't tell what is going on in this one.
last one

The sad thing now is that now Amazon will start recommending these kind of ugly dishes to me since I searched for them.

Mandy, those are great! I particularly like "The Death". The name alone makes that plate fantastic.

Posted by MandyM (Member # 8375) on :

Is that fantasic in a good way like you really like them or you are thrilled to have one-upped your sister-in-law? [Big Grin]

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

[Smile] Definitely the latter.

Not if you delete your amazon.com cookies. Well, I guess if you were signed in they still will. Always remember to sign out whenever looking for things you don't really want.

MandyM: [ROFL] I totally thought of the Birdcage when I saw this thread title!

And this is all really really hilarious.

I've seen Birdcage, but it's been a long time. How does the ugly plate thing tie in with it?

Posted by MandyM (Member # 8375) on :

They had bowls with naked men on them.

My mom had a plate with a pheasant on it, we only use it on thanksgiving, I think it's a hundred years old, but man it's ugly.

Oh, right, I remember that. Something about the senator emptying the soup from one, or them trying to get soup into one before he saw it, or something like that, right?

You know, it's interesting how sexually explicit a lot of the artwork on Greek pottery was (along with scenes from myth, sporting events, hunting scenes, and religious ritual, of course). The interior of kylixes seemed to be a particularly popular spot for erotic imagery--intended as something entertaining to look at after having polished off your wine, I expect. I was going to link to some examples, but I don't know, maybe this isn't the place for it.
