At some point in the future we will have municipal internet access. A service that is provided by the state and covered by taxes. Everyone everywhere in the US will be able to log on. We will look back at the days of "pay ISP's" and think: "Wow, I can't believe people used to NOT have internet access everywhere they went."

I'm not so sure it'll happen. We still pay telecommunications companies for telephone service, and we certainly pay them for cellphone service (those of us who have cellphones, anyway; I do not).
