Shows on the line to be cancelled

quote:
Overall, 22 shows are on the bubble, up from 19 last spring and just 12 in 2004. The increase largely is a function of several WB and UPN series competing for fewer slots on CW, a new network that will replace both this fall. And it's a function of the increasingly late start for spring tryout series, which have precious little time to establish a following before networks set their fall schedules in mid-May.

CBS' The King of Queens and NBC's Scrubs are endangered only because of expiring contracts that threaten to dramatically increase their network price tags. Queens star Kevin James is looking for a big raise, and Scrubs' pact with NBC ends in May.

Don't worry, Scrubs fans: If a deal can't be worked out, the hospital comedy will land at comedy-starved ABC, whose Touchstone studio produces it, says executive producer Bill Lawrence.

ABC confirms its interest in adopting the show.

There's a lot more on the second page of the article, but I'm not going to quote the whole article obviously.

I'm glad that Scrubs will survive, it's a fantastic show. I hope King of Queens survives too, Kevin James is hilarious. I almost want to see Joey survive just to see how well it could do in the future. The writing on Friends get better and better as the characters matured, and I've love to see where the creators of the show take Joey's character.

Most of these shows I don't care about though, and I find the recent spate of shows rather lackluster. Invasion and it's ilk can die, and make television better I think. Prison Break should die too, I don't understand why it's being renewed so wholeheartedly. People really like that show?

West Wing, obviously, was cancelled, which saddens me, as I've always loved that show, even post-Sorkin. Though I am interested in seeing what he does next. Scrubs, Lost, Crossing Jordan, (as of now, Teachers and Heist) and Numbers are safe though, so that's a small consolation.

It really saddens me that shows like Beauty and the Geek and America's Next Top Model are coming back for another season, and yet amazing shows like Arrested Develoment were completely cancelled. What is it with this country's obsession to reality TV?

Arg! King of Queens is a terrible show... Why is it still there?
Gaw. I hate tee vee.
I can't believe these people get paid 2000 dollars to pump out such terrible shows!!!!! grah! >.<

I really don't care if any of these shows make it. Well, maybe Veronica Mars just because the fans love it so much (still bitter about Carnivale...). OC should be canceled because even though it's my Thursday guilty pleasure, they are going off to college next year and we all know how that goes [Roll Eyes]

Law and Order should be cancelled. Don't get me wrong, I love L&O and am a major fan, but it's really formulaic and boring and improbable now and NBC should quit while ahead.

Does anyone here actually WATCH shows like Everwood or Freddie? No judgment, just curious as the styles don't appeal to me.

Is that stupid show Yes, Dear still on? I hate that show... I despise it. It's so STUPID!

Posted by prolixshore (Member # 4496) on :

I rather enjoy How I Met Your Mother, and I am glad to see they are picking it up. The rest of these shows, including many that are being picked up, I could care less.

Heh. Yes, Dear was cancelled once, and then brought back to fill time a half season later. My Dad hates that show with a passion. He thinks it is the worst show on TV, and while I agree it is bad, there are far worse.

I watched the first two seasons of Everwood. But stopped watching after the writers destroyed all the progress they'd made with the characters over those two seasons.

Posted by blacwolve (Member # 2972) on :

Mostly I'm only worried about Veronica Mars. It's hovering on the brink and I really don't want to see it go.

I watch Everwood every once in a while. I consider it a guilty pleasure for when I'm bored or stressed out and need something to destress to. It's actually not a bad show. Certainly better than most of what's on tv right now. I've never heard of Freddie, though.

Save Galactica!

Oh wait. That's right - it doesn't need saving.

In that case, to heck with the rest of TV!

Posted by signal (Member # 6828) on :

I kind of want to see Prison Break continue, but at the same time I can't wait until it ends.

As for the OC, the first season was good, but from what I saw of the second and third, it sucked. Maybe one day if I'm bored out of my skull with absolutely nothing better to do, I might rent it or catch a rerun. Or not.

Is it too late for another season of M*A*S*H???

If they ever cancelled Law and Order, I would die.

If they had to cancel one, they should cancel Criminal Intent. That is the weakest of the Law and Orders.

SVU, however, should have its own cable channel.

What about After MASH?

I am addicted to the WB, and dont want to lose my shows. Smallville I hope sticks around for another season, as I'm quite smitten with it.

That's another show I lost interest in after the first season.

I LOVE Veronica Mars and will be very upset if it's cancelled. I also like Supernatural. Those are the only UPN/WB shows that I watch. I love Scrubs, but I'm pretty sure it'll be back.

Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :

Scrubs will be back no matter what, the question is whether or not it will return to NBC, or if it will go to ABC.

On Fox I watch "Malcolm in the Middle" and "The Simpsons." The only currently-produced network show I watch is "The American Inventor." That's basically it as far as currently-produced TV.

I dont watch TV. But the few shows I do occasionally watch are all repeats. Such as Mash, the X-Files, and the old ER episodes on in the mornging on TNT.

If they cancelled all the L&O shows, NBC would be almost empty.

Alphabetically (because I can't rank them otherwise):

Of these, Smallville would be the first to go.

The ONLY two shows we watch at our house are Bones and House

FG

Posted by Omega M. (Member # 7924) on :

The American version of The Office (and the British one, though the British one is already dead) and the new Doctor Who. However, I think both of those are safe for a while.

Meanwhile, they can kill The Simpsons any time they want, not because it's gotten bad but just because it seems to have explored every type of story it can (as listed in the Chris Bridges column posted here a few weeks ago).

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

No way, I like Bones and House... I wouldn't mind the Simpson's going, and some of these stupid new shows that keep popping up like mushrooms.
I knew they would be dumb... I just knew it.

umm.. Did I miss it? Where's the list of bubble and canceled shows on that news story? Discussing the why doesn't do much good without the who...

(I like survivor. I don't like any other reality show though)

We rather like the Amazing Race.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

I don't want them to cancel Bernie Mac. That's one of my favourite shows.
Malcolm has been on too long. King of the Hill annoys me... And some of these family shows were people are rude to each other all the time are annoying too.

Yes, I know they cancelled it years ago, but I really really want my Firefly back!

Posted by starLisa (Member # 8384) on :

Firefly
Freaks & Geeks
Wonderfalls
Joan of Arcadia
Otherworld

kq, the thing about Criminal Intent is that I really like the crimes they come up with and the convoluted storylines, but I really, really hate how they pretty much don't figure out anything until the very end, when Vincent D'whatshisname pretty much just tells us exactly what happened. There's not even a point in trying to figure it out yourself because Vincent is going to piece together the fact that the ceiling was blue and the moon is rising toward Taurus and the murderer has a German Shepherd.

That is not how Law and Order goes!

Smallville needs to finish. Finish, I say. The travesty that was season 4 ruined the show. Season 5 had such promise. And then they put the mid-season filler crap.

I don't even get excited about it. I watch it cause obsessive compulsive about finishing stuff (just finished Sawyers Neanderthal Parallax despite my disgust with his in your face social criticism and romanticization of all things Neanderthal, because I had to know how it ended) but I don't expect much, don't worry about unanswered questions or seemingly dropped plot lines because I know that they WILL BE dropped. There's no big conspiracy or explanation that will make everything fit.

I love SVU. Love it. Better than the original. Completely aside from Mariska Hargitay (who I am totally in love with, along with Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd). That show should never end.

L&O:CI is good but too Perry Mason-ish. He ALWAYS gets a confession? Always? The few times he doesn't it turns out the person is a freaking genius, who comes back later for more and then is taken down (like Olivia D'Abo, that one time). If I was a criminal defense attorney, I'd be all, "alright, this conversation is over. Shut up, Steve/Bill/Dwight. Seriously. You need to close your mouth." And then tell him that he should never, under any circumstances, talk to Goran (or Eames, as useless as she is.)

South Park is still funny, but sometimes they seem to try too hard to make a statement. The balance between frivilous humor beat-into-the-ground mocking of <insert idea/people/belief here> sometimes is lacking. It's missed a few more times than it used to. Part of being on that long, though.

without a doubt if I could save one show it would be Veronica Mars. Its an amazing show. Its amazingly written. Even Joss thinks its worth the time.

This is the exact reason why as obsessed with I am with Charmed I am soooooo happy it is not coming back. Brad ahs ruined the entire show with this season. He has done more than ruin it, I don't even care if I am home on Sunday nights anymore. This season has been a travesty, I would rather it had ended on the note it did with Somethign Wicca This Way Goes last season than have had to sit through this season.

What they need to do is kill off everyone except for Chloe and the two Luthors. Including (especially) Clark. And have Clark's powers all transfer to Chloe.

That's a show I'd really enjoy, as opposed to now, when I watch Smallville out of a pathetic hope that it'll give me something worthwhile.

BSG needs to stay.

And they need to bring Firefly back.

And they need to kick out the current cast of SG-1, bring back the old cast and get some decent writers for it again.

And I need to watch the new Dr. Who.

Posted by Kristen (Member # 9200) on :

Don't get me wrong, I love L&O (I own all the DVDs they have released. Seriously). But, the show has gone downhill. You can tell they are losing steam. I'd just rather they leave on a high note.

This does not apply to SVU! Even though it appears everyone's getting hurt or shot lately, it's still awesome. And as far as CI goes, doesn't it seem like all crimes committed this season were by Nicole?

A fun link: http://www.jumptheshark.com. I personally think L&O jumped the shark when all their episodes became "ripped from the headlines"

Shows they should bring back:

Firefly
Arrested Development
Futurama
Angel

Alcon what they needed to do with SG1 was to have cancelled it at season eight when it was still brill. to remove the main character and the series main baddies and bring in new ones was a travesty of a decision...

Thats why im glad they're killing off Alias. The writers get eight eps to end the series the way they wanted instead of it just ending without warning and without a conclusion eg Dark Angel, Tru Calling and starship Troopers(yeah i know guilty pleasure or what)

24 should also be cancelled, its just sooo bad, after the two getting killed in the first ep and the abysmal fourth season, they just ruined one of the best shows on telly! I think i'll go basque in some season three brilliance....

But by god if BSG gets cancelled i might actually kill someone!

They definitely seem to be stretching out Smallville. What other shows does the WB have? I guess they will keep milking it. I heard a while back it was slated for 6 seasons which would make next season the last. I hope so, just to get some closure. I have decided that Tom Wellings(?) is not even a average actor. All he could do at some pretty dramatic scenes this year was stare off in space and look confused. And whole the animosity/chemistry thing between him and Lois just doesn't work.

American Idol is my guilty pleasure show. All other reality TV needs to go, especially celeb-reality, that has to be the absolute worst. I don't care what Flava Flav, the Brady guy or Bobby Brown are doing these days.

Some of these shows on the bubble I didn't realize were still on. Both Scrubs and King of Queens got old and I quit watching long ago. They still make ER? who is watching it?

Those of us who don't have cable, don't get CBS, and need background noise that isn't Fox News.

I stopped watching ER when Carter went to Africa.

The first time.

Wow, people don't get CBS? [Wink]

I was convinced I lived in the dark ages. ABC, CBS, 2 different NBCs (different towns), FOX, PBS, and WB, sometimes UPN will come in but not most of the time and Veronica Mars is the only show there that I'd watch.

Posted by Tarrsk (Member # 332) on :

Veronica Mars. If they cancelled everything else on TV, but kept VM, I'd consider it a fair trade.

That said, I'd be sad to see Battlestar Galactica and Scrubs go. Fortunately, neither is in any trouble.

To balance out my sure bets, here are some things that won't happen, but would make me ridiculously happy if they did.

Bring back:
-Firefly
-Angel
-Wonderfalls
-Futurama

Oh, and kill The Simpsons while you're at it. Please? Put the damn show out of its misery.

Breyer:

We get NBC, ABC, NBC, something local, a fuzzy/bluish UPN, WGN (WB) and uh...CBS will occasionally filter in on our tiny 5inch black and white TV. Oh, and we get like 3 Spanish channels.

And we live on the 6th floor! There shouldn't be reception problems.

Okay, "Monk" is good, but that's not on a major network either. The last show on one of the "Big Three" for which I felt any enthusiasm was "Freaks and Geeks." Its cancellation took along with it my last little shred of belief in the existence of any intelligence on the part of network executives.

I will miss the West Wing when it ends, but I'm also kind of ready for it to end.
